#river asks

Hey gang! So I scored a nice big tank for a steal at a garage sale this weekend, and I am now seriously considering getting a snake. Specifically, I'd like to get a male western hognose. Does anyone have any simple tips for getting the tank set up properly to house a hognose? When I look up equipment lists online, they tend to look discouragingly long and expensive, so I want to determine what the most important first steps and equipment are. (I know I need substrate and lots of clutter and hides; the tank actually came with three sturdy hides, although I'll probably put more wood and stuff in there. And I know I need a heat lamp, possibly with a thermometer feature? Also where does one go about buying the pinkies and later mice to feed them?)

Okay so this is a bit of a plug so I’ve included a video link because you need to hear it. My friend Emma is a singer/songwriter/composer and she and her friend wrote this song called Beautiful Lies a few years back and it’s always resonated as the embodiment of River and The Doctor’s relationship.

The basic gist of the song is that it’s about a couple who decide to get married on the day the world ends so they can feel joy one last time. It’s haunting but it’s just beautiful.

I came across this in the River tag a few years ago and had to message the artist to tell her I thought it was amazing and asked if I could use it as my lock screen because I’m polite like that. Are all of the adults in this series completely awful?!

Please tell me there are some adult characters in this series who aren’t, just, the absolute worst. It’s becoming slightly painful; even Queen Coral, who seems to have her good side so far, is showing signs of following the awfulness trend (although we just met her, so we’ll see). Osprey might have been okay, but we didn’t get to see him long before, well, you know. Riptide doesn’t feel like an adult to me, since he’s only a few years older than Tsunami. Some of the prisoners in book 1 were probably decent, the group singing was a lovely scene, but nobody the dragonets have personally gotten to know so far seem capable of compassion, acceptance, or at least tact (lookin’ at you, Cattail).

Please, someone tell me there are eventually a few adults who aren’t homicidal, racist, sociopathic, paranoid, cowardly, and/or egotistical beyond measure. I’m all for kids’ series that let kids be the heroes, but GOOD GRAVY. This is not intended to covertly bash the whole series, I am genuinely hoping someone will tell me there’s some nice adult characters to look forward to because it’s just a little hard for me to read a story where the kids never get to experience nice role models, but I think I can hold out through the tough interactions better if I know some nice ones are coming.

I have nearly 40 How To Guides for Mythical Creatures I’ve written over the past few years, and it’s easy to tell which ones have had the most coverage by the notes. But I’ve always wondered which ones are peoples’ all-time FAVORITES!

So if there is enough interest, I thought I could split them up into a series of polls (sorted by notes so the most well-known aren’t all together), then put the winners together to find a grand winner. Whichever one comes out on top, I shall draw it as a comic!

(I’d like to draw them all as a comic series one day, but baby steps!)

Regarding the opposition my peeps in England and other such countries have towards the act of using a microwave instead of a teapot:

Are you simply opposed to the idea of heating the tea itself in the microwave? Or do you dislike the idea of heating water in the microwave altogether?

To clarify, as far as I am aware, most of us Americans just heat up the water in the microwave, because it is faster. (Especially if there is only one person i.e. you drinking tea - I heated water in a teapot the other day to give myself multiple cups of hot water and it took like an hour, but to be fair I was using a little single burner so maybe it normally takes less time. Either way, it takes me two minutes to heat a single mug of water in the microwave to my desired temperature for steeping tea.)

I know I myself don’t have the most sensitive palate, but I just cannot tell the difference between hot water from a stove and hot water from a microwave. The tea goes in after the water is heated regardless. So anyway, if ya’ll could, please let me know if there is some sort of taste difference to microwaved water that you don’t like or if you just dislike the idea that we chuck the tea in some cold water and put the whole thing in the microwave? (Which idk maybe some people do but I’ve never run into it - you always heat the water before putting the tea in.)
