145452 Ritona (The Kuiper Belt Object Ritona, Cosmic Arbitrator ~ 30 Jul 2025, Philip Sedgwick)
Funny how it goes. Aware that astronomers now engage in an active pursuit of naming “larger” Kuiper Belt Objects, Tuesday morning a week ago, I checked the Minor Planet Center listings for newly named objects. None noted. Then, Tuesday afternoon, while in the midst of a matrix of activity, an e-mail came in from Mark Pottenger with updated names and data for asteroids, centaurs and Kuiper Belt Objects. Given that Diamondback drew his attention as a newly named asteroid, and living in Arizona where Diamondbacks are a sports thing as well as a snake thing, I went back to check the MPC listing. Yep, there she was: Ritona.
An aside here: When I create an ephemeris for any named centaur or KBO, I rely upon data provided by Mark Pottenger and I use his CCRS program for ephemeris generation. We should all be grateful for his diligent work.
Anyway, we have a new object of 680 km in diameter, Ritona. While she is too diminutive to be considered a dwarf planet, she certainly provides lubricant for life’s sticky wickets and for any and all negotiations for parties on opposite sides of any issue.
Ritona (also noted as Pritona) stood out as a Celtic goddess revered in what is now Germany. She was also ceremonially noted per inscriptions in France. In one location, her cult, as it was deemed, "had a carefully built little temple." This temple included porticos and arcades with benches arranged in a semicircle, designed for conversation. Also present in her ceremonial spaces where courtyards and theaters suspected to be used for presentations of a religious nature.
The theonym Ritona, notably interpreted as “that of the ford” suggests she was a goddess of fords: a shallow place in streams and rivers where the waters can be safely crossed. Water crossings, per Ritona, required adequate religious precautions. The nomenclature in other cultures suggests “those crossing the river” - an implication of “ferrymen” (or ferrywomen?) Suggestively, Ritona likely maintains an affinity with Pluto’s planetary companion, Charon, and the centaur Nessus (both requiring caution and proper fees). She has been further characterized as a seated mother goddess with dogs or babies on her lap.
Ritona’s earlier astronomical nomenclature includes the minor solar system number 145452 and before that, a provisional designation of 2005 RN43. She possesses a low eccentricity though her inclination falls in the moderate range. When closest to the Sun, she stands outside of Pluto’s most distant retreat from the Sun. This gives her an orbital period of 268.48 years and a daily rotation of 6.95 hours.
Notably for interpretive purposes, her node intersects the ecliptic at 7 Libra 01. Her perihelion weighs in at 5 Aries 11. On 01 August Ritona transits 24 Pisces 53. For those of you who are historically minded, her previous transit to this degree occurred in the middle of April 1761.
Notable from a Galactic perspective, her node lies conjunct the supermassive black hole that stands as the core of our super galaxy and her perihelion opposes the Super Galactic Center while aligning conjunct her south node. The suggestion: Though unlikely to be a dwarf planet (pending diameter revisions), her nature works to serve all relationship and soul-based negotiations. She rules reconciliation without compromise, fairness and the leveling of the playing field through ceremonies conducted in sacred spaces rich with honest emotional expression and conversation. She refers to totally forthright expression of all relationship needs, wants and demands clearly articulated to other involved individuals.
Ritona offers simple guidelines for resolving relationship differences:
First, select a pristine space purified and prepared for ceremony.
Second, sit and converse, striving to see the viewpoint of the other person and equally important, assess why that view is held.
Third, search your emotional database for any recollection of any positive relationship dynamic experienced in the past, no matter what the context. Present that dynamic within ongoing conversations.
Fourth, when a resolving circumstance is presented, recognize and integrate it immediately.
Fifth, realize that yielding or the giving of ground that enhances a relationship represents a good thing and a viable option going forward. It is a gain, not a loss.
Sixth, as with all propitiation, when objectives are realized, give thanks and praise the heavens.
Ritona provides detailed context when dealing with relationships. While a synastric connection between two persons could be detailed as subject and predicate via a conjunction, square or opposition, Ritona offers adjective and adverbs that emphasize nuances, subtext and subtleties, all in the interest of solutions and resolutions that will stick.
Here’s to all squabbles resolving smoothly with the pristineness of Ritona.
More soon.

Ritona – is a Celtic goddess of fords and water crossings. She was chiefly venerated by the Treveri people of the Mosel Valley (now spread across parts of Germany and France). Her name has been derived from the same root as the Welsh word rhyd (ford): water was sacred to the Celts but it also required extra religious precautions when crossing and travelling on rivers and streams. She appears also as ‘Pritona’ and, in Roman documentation, bears similarities to Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and warfare.
