First impression

Basically, my first impression was the same impression the show was going for with her character—that she was the “unpopular nerd” and played for laughs. I really didn’t think too much about her. (This sounds so mean-girl of me. As if I wasn’t the Gretchen of my school. Braces and all).

Impression now

I think my feelings about her changed during her appearance in issue 15 of the comics. She seems so much more developed as a person. She had opinions and passion, a funky sense of style, and a super creative spirit.

Favorite moment

Idk, I just like this frame. I think about it sometimes when I get olives for my salad at the salad bar at work.

Idea for a story

Despite having admittedly more opinions about Gretchen than I thought I did, I don’t have any super solid ideas for a story involving her.

I do think it would be fun to explore her and Dib and their relationship. I feel like they would actually hit it off if he actually got to know her.

Unpopular opinion

I think my unpopular opinion bleeds into the next couple questions (and kind of bled into the above). While I don’t really care enough to “ship” anything super hard, I thought it was really cute that she developed a crush on Dib (Tak, The Hideous New Girl). I love that she’s also invested in wacky theories and the paranormal (comic issue 15). Again, I think she and Dib would actually have some chemistry together as a couple if Dib really got to know her. I could see them dating in high school or college.

Dib takes notice of Gretchen and has some level of respect for her theories. He might not agree with them, but he acknowledges them.

In issue 15, he uses her name twice and actually debates the merits of her theory regarding Bitters. He doesn’t do this with anyone else; he dismisses their stories way more flippantly.

And it’s not like Dib is spouting any kind of sage logic or wisdom. Not anywhere else, and not in this comic.

He’s still typical, paranormal-obsessed Dib with his own crazy theories about vampires and tortilla factories. His theories are just different than the other kids’. (Also, bonus points that despite him rebuffing it, it’s implied in the comic that Gretchen’s theory might actually be right).

I mean, I never really stopped. But it’s been little one-shots and collaborative pieces between close friends.

I want to write something on the scale of A Parade of Indignities, which was a bona-fide longfic and had a posting schedule for AO3 and FFN.

In case this came across your dash, and you're like "who the fuck is this lady and why would I care about what she writes?" my name is Rissy. I enjoy writing stories for the Invader Zim fandom, and I've been around for several years, writing stories and just kind of vibing. I mainly write gen fics. I used to post regularly on AO3 and FFN, but after I finished my longfic a couple years back, I took a bit of a hiatus.

I’m going to put this poll up to test some waters and use the results to help me make my decision. If there’s any one option that has overwhelming popularity, it might give me some pause for thought.

1) inALIENable. Very Zim-centric and Gaz-centric. Here’s a post that explains this fanfic pretty well. I would probably take the outline back to the drawing board and heavily rewrite the sections I have for it (I'd written about 1/3 of it in 2018, then I put it waaaay on the back-burner). Fair warning, it involves a major character death that occurs before the story begins. It also includes an OC that doesn't dominate the story but plays a key role in the story. I think part of the reason I’ve been hesitant to post it is because I don’t anticipate it gaining much readership. I just envision the major character death/OC acting as deterrents for readers. Stupid to concern myself so much over readership, I know. I get it. I should write for me and me only. I'm going to be transparent, though: if I'm going to devote my time to my hobby after 50+ hours of work a week, and I'm putting in the effort of polishing it up so I could post it publicly, and I'm looking forward to talking about it with people and engaging with the fandom more...then it would be incredibly demoralizing to receive nothing but dead air. I'm sorry. I have no other way to explain it.

If not inALIENable, I have a couple other ideas of stories I could write and post on AO3.

2) An expansion of a one-shot I’ve written and posted on Tumblr. I’m thinking either this prompt or this prompt.

3) Something else entirely. I'm open to suggestions.

Hey Mina!

First impression

I thought his whole character concept was really cool. Vortian? Who now leads a resistance? And has insider information on the Irken Empire? Sounds freaking dope.

Nothing’s really changed. I still think his character is cool.

Favorite moment

I like how he randomly appears at the very end of the comics. Just look at his lil’ overbite.

Idea for a story

Some sort of one shot from his days working as a scientist for the Empire. It would have been interesting to see him and Zim interact. I could think of countless routes to take with it, especially depending on Lard Nar’s view of the Empire then.

Unpopular opinion

I guess this isn’t so much of a Lard Nar opinion as a Resisty opinion, but here goes anyway: I’ve never really been a fan of Resisty stories or “Zim joins the Resisty” stories. I wish I liked the idea more. And there’s really no reason behind my dislike for it, either. It’s just not my cup of tea. I don’t have any interest in it.

If I were to write a story with Lard Nar, it would probably be from when he was a scientist, or maybe give him some pre-Resisty backstory where he escaped the Irken invasion and fled as a refugee.

Favorite relationship

I can’t really think of any? At least any that I like??? Maybe some sort of begrudging mentor/mentee friendship between him and Zim as scientists? Like, Lard Nar having to keep young Zim in line and prevent the lab from exploding. Maybe growing a soft spot for him over time? Idk.

Favorite headcanon

(More of a Vortian headcanon than anything, but I’m shoehorning it here anyway because Lard Nar would 100% be someone to contribute to it.)
