Dark and Marvin were a thing while Marvin was staying in Dark’s room. They spent time together, Dark would sneak him out for a date. They kept it quiet for a while because Dark didn’t know how everyone else would react since how they see him is very important to how much he can help them (from his pov anyway)

There may have been some denial immediately after Marvin being found but that’s mostly because both of them are so used to having to dedicate themselves to others: Dark to everyone in the building, and Marvin to his brother. They’ve got it instilled in them that they’re not allowed to take anything for themselves so they insist there’s nothing there.

Dark moving Marvin to another room was their ‘splitting up’, it was Dark drawing the line because he doesn’t believe that he can care about Marvin and protect everyone else. So he makes Marvin believe that he doesn’t care, and puts Marvin back into his old role of being responsible for Anti, the exact role he had promised to protect him from (though he wasn’t aware of it at the time due to the lies Marvin told about who Anti was).

They both still really care for each other (something that is coming back into play soon) but feel as those they are looking to protect don’t want them to be together, which is not true. The others are just sick of Dark being a manipulative hypocrit and want him to stop saying one thing and doing another, while Anti doesn’t want Marvin to forget about him and run away. In fact everyone else honestly think that Marvin and Dark are still together and that they’re still keeping it secret from them. The only one who knows they aren’t is Wilford who sees how much it’s hurting Dark to hold Marvin at arm’s length. If this whole thing with Mark hadn’t come to a head when it did, he was going to lock the two of them in a room together until they sorted themselves out.
