Rip is an incredibly violent and easily angered. He will take out his rage on anyone within his vicinity. More often than not, that happens to be Zofia and B.J. He also seems to see aggression as the natural order of things, valuing strength over anything, and attempting to force that mindset onto his son.

His lack of empathy is apparent in how he views his family. He continually sees them as nothing more than outlets on which to take out his frustrations, not caring about the physical or mental damage he causes. Especially when he forces his son to kill his beloved dog. And in the end, he allows her to be sold out to the Nazis to keep his own self safe. And since he only looks out for the interests of the straight white man, he will not spare any empathy for anyone who doesn’t fit that criteria. And he sees no problem with selling out B.J. or outright killing him when he comes back to his home.

He only cares about his own interests and how he can benefit himself. The only reason he married Zofia was because of her father’s business. When it doesn’t make him more money, he then blames her for not working hard enough. Even the sole nice thing he did for B.J. by helping him with his night terrors was due to the fact that it was waking him up and Rip couldn’t sleep.

Due to his prejudice, he sees any progression towards equal rights as an affront against what he sees as the natural order. He sees the Nazi’s oppression as something that’s advantageous for him and viewed the world as being out against the white man. Thus, anything that could be viewed as his own fault will be pushed onto others such as the business failure. Not only that, but when he meets B.J. years later, he blames the abuse on his son for not understanding what he was trying to teach him.

The worst part is that he doesn’t believe he is wrong about anything he does. He believes himself to be morally upstanding and thinks anything going against his mindset is completely wrong. He calls B.J. a murderer for killing Nazis even though the Nazis are guilty of killing innocent people for no reason other than their identity. Although, due to his prejudice, he may see that as those people getting what they deserve for being queer, Jewish, or people of color. All the abuse he pushes onto his son is due to him attempting to toughen him up and B.J. “not getting it”.

Rip may not be the most dangerous, but he is easily one of the worst.
