Rinea took a deep breath, sending a long, final look at the mansion before her. How many hours had she spent idling in its halls, eating dinners beneath its looming, gloomy ceilings? In the past two years or so, she had spent more time here than at her own house. Now, it stood empty and abandoned, Berkut and the rest of his kin long gone. Only Alm remained, and he had graciously allowed her to do as she wished with the place, wanting nothing to do with his distant cousin’s estate.
Faye squeezed her hand from where she stood silently beside her, stubborn and unyielding, as always, eyes focused straight ahead on the offending building. Rinea squeezed back, steadying herself, borrowing some of Faye’s conviction. She needed to be rid of the memories that haunted her, so many of them tied back to the residents of this mansion.
She pulled her hand gently away from Faye’s, and cupped it together with her free hand, blowing into her palms gently. A small spark of fire flickered to life, coaxed into existence by the heat that now ran through her veins. The flames grew and grew, settling into a large ball that didn’t even flinch as the icy breeze blew across it.
Bracing her feet, she pulled back her right arm, and she flung the ball of fire. It soared easily, crossing the ground between them and the mansion without struggle. The flame caught, powered by magic, and with a crackle, Berkut’s mansion began to burn. Rinea watched, unbothered by the heat that now licked at her face.
With it burned away a withered part of her heart, and she now felt lighter than she had in ages. Faye matched her smile, patting her on the shoulder.
“I knew you had it in you,” she praised.
Rinea reached up for Faye’s hand, hair waving in the wind. “I would not have been able to do it without you. We should go. There is much to be done.” And together they set off, ready to face the challenges the newly unified nation would bring them.
