Wolvam grabbed Rilt before the young man could run off into trouble.
"What are you doing?" Rilt demanded in a harsh whisper. "Unhand me this instant!"
"You're no longer Lord Rilt, and you'd do well to remember that," Wolvam said, his tone even and quiet. He glanced down the hallways and led Rilt down the east side, and stepped into another room that was devoid of people.
When Rilt opened his mouth, Wolvam put a finger to his lips and tapped on the panels around the room. Then he heard it: a telltale hollow sound. It was easy to nudge it open, and easier to sidle into the dark. Rilt wasted no time following him.
They took the hidden hallway without any light to guide them. Wolvam walked with a hand to the wall and the other hand extended behind for Rilt to hold. Then Wolvam halted, drawing Rilt up alongside him.
"Feel that?" the master kaedin whispered soundlessly, the words brushing over Rilt's ear. "Pipes in the walls."
Rilt narrowed his focus, his kae resonance searching for the faintest trace of... that. Spurts and gushes and trickles. The water in the pipes moved erratically, but they led the way to the main part of the palace.
"How did you know about these secret passages?" Rilt asked.
He could sense the other man's smirk even in the dark. "Some things you are born into," murmured Wolvam. He started off again, and Rilt followed behind him now, a hand to the wall also.
About four right turns and two left turns on, they reach a place where they could overhear the conversation on the other side of the wall. King Kirzan was agitated, Master Midusel placating, and a third voice that was vaguely familiar to Rilt interjected now and again with sensible suggestions that Kirzan seemed too deaf to hear.
