Tumblr has a steep learning curve.  It's the steepest I've ever encountered, and that's one reason it's so popular.  It has a walled garden chic that everyone on it the core hipster userbase really loves.  The first thing you need to do is install the Missing E plugin; it makes Tumblr actually functional.  The second thing to do is just abandon all hope of ever making Tumblr's dashboard function like a blog--the dashboard isn't a blog.  This is really frustrating at first but you will adapt quickly.  You can make your front page a blog, if you want, with Disqus or Facebook comments and all the usual stuff.  But the Dash is just a river you throw bottled messages into, hoping for the best.  

don't worry about people "removing" text and so on--that's sort of illusory.  Anyone who sees the picture and is actively interested in finding the source knows how.  The source for posts is attached to them permanently and anyone who wants to know the first time something is posted (that particular iteration of it, that is--not a duplicate uploaded to the site by someone else) will be able to click to it easily.  if it's posted without attribution it can be easily tracked down with TinEye or Google Search By Image.

so, Tumblr does allow a back and forth.  but you have to hack it with Missing E.  this is a case of coders making a badly-written site function the way people want it to instead of the way it's designed to.  once you have Missing E installed you can do all the tricks people do--reblog yourself, reply to replies, reblog reblogs, etc.  This creates dialog.   I don't have much of it on my blog because i don't like the clutter but I'm sure you've seen it happen.
