The photo that sat on my phone for three years.
This photo changed my entire career.
Back in 2017, when I had just become Director of Food and Beverage, a friend of mine named Marjoon Tomato did something on a quiet afternoon that I did not realise would change everything. He took two photos of me and placed them side by side. Mohan from Pixel Media polished the result.
Chef whites on one side. A suit on the other. One image. Two worlds.
The strange thing is, I did not know what to do with the photo when he sent it to me. I looked at it for a few minutes. I felt something. But I could not name what it was. So I did what most of us do with things we cannot name. I did nothing. The photo sat on my phone for three years.
Then in late 2020, the world slowed down. The hotel I was running emptied out. The kitchens I had spent my life inside went quiet. And for the first time in nearly two decades, I had time to think.
I went back through my phone one evening. I found the photo. And this time, I finally understood what it had been telling me. That a chef does not have to choose. That the kitchen and the boardroom are not opposite worlds. That talent and business literacy are not enemies. That the most successful chefs I had worked with, the ones who built lives that lasted, had quietly built both worlds at the same time.
That photo became the foundation of a book.
The book is Rich Chef Poor Chef. A number one international bestseller.

Mutfak ve yönetim odası karşıt dünyalar değildir. Yetenek ve iş bilgisi düşman değildir. Birlikte çalıştığım en başarılı şefler, kalıcı hayatlar inşa edenler, bu iki dünyayı sessizce aynı anda inşa etmişti.
