Rabia’s Story
We can’t show her face because it’s not safe to. To be Rohingya is to experience targeted oppression which sets the stage for one of the worst genocides in our time. Our friend, Rabia, is a resourceful, hard-working 27 year old Rohingya woman. She has 4 children and has lived in an Internally Displaced Camp for the past 10 years - ever since she fled her burning village back in 2012.
There were no shelters when she got to the camp, so she made one and had to pay rent because there were no government spaces left. Her husband is disabled, so she makes snacks and sells them in front of her makeshift home. The coup came and the cost of food rose. She sells less these days and can’t make enough to buy things to make meals.
That’s why this #GivingTuesday we’re raising money for rice. It won’t erase Rabia’s hurdles but her 4 little ones will go to bed with the comfort of full bellies, and that’s something she is thankful for.
