As hard as they try to repair it, the damage will always be there, will always be visible. The rifts between them cannot be undone, and they cannot be ignored. It will never be as perfect as it once was.

Can you do another prompt from during overwatch's golden days? I really enjoy them.
Well not a prompt exactly but I have been in the mood for some Golden Age R76!
Well I guess this one takes place technically right before the âgolden ageâ really kicked into high gear.
â
The sky was light lavender, and the trees outside of Jackâs window were gold and red and orange. The office was new. The office smelled new. New paint, fancy ergonomic chairâtoo soft. Too clean. This place wasnât lived in, but then again he wasnât used to lived in spaces. The past few years he was stuck in makeshift bunkers that they could barely fortify against the assault of the omniums, and now they were here. He had taken off his dress uniform jacket. They still hadnât dedicated the new headquartersâthat ceremony was tomorrow. Then there were the press junkets and the dedication ceremony and gala for the new headquarters, and all the diplomats and politicians and god he was so tired. He was so tired and yet the world was rushing to rebuild itself after everything and it had every right to, and yes, it was a great honor that he was being called on to help with that rebuilding but⌠he gave a glance to the row of medals on the dress jacket resting on the back of his chair, then sighed and rubbed his temples. He just wanted to rest but he knew the world didnât have time to rest. The door slid open and Gabe walked in and set a mug on the desk in front of him.
âDrink up,â said Gabe, motioning with a mug in his own hand.
âCoffee at 7?â Jack picked up the mug and sipped it, then winced at the burn of alcohol.
âMostly coffee,â said Gabe. Jack snorted. âIrish coffee,â said Gabe, âYouâre Irish, right?â
âYouâve gotten cozy with the promotions,â said Jack, chuckling and taking another sip.
âYou know me. You know itâs not coziness,â said Gabe, âWe need to take what little creature comforts we can get.â He stared into his own mug a bit, âYouâve had a long day.â
âStrike CommanderâŚâ Jack repeated the words but they sounded hollow. He looked up at Gabriel. âGabeâI told PetrasâI did say you had more experience⌠that youââ
Gabe scoffed and clapped Jack on the shoulder, âLook, at this point, Iâm just glad I can get through a night without worrying that a bastion unitâs going to shoot me to a pulp.â
ââŚYou still worry about that,â Jack said a bit quietly.
âYeah well⌠thatâs how it is,â said Gabe, looking out the window, âNice view,â he said, âTheyâre sticking me in the freakinâ âMeanwhile at the Legion of Doomâ tactical intelligence room in the basement level. No windows. Lots of screens though,â he sipped his coffee, âFeels cool, really.â He snickered, âYâknow once that statue goes up youâre going to have an excellent view of your own ass.â
âTheyâre not putting up the statue,â muttered Jack.
âOh theyâre putting up the statue,â said Gabe.
âWell they sure as hell arenât putting it up here,â said Jack, he rested his forehead in his hand before taking another sip of the heavily spiked coffee, âIâm not ready for all this,â he said, taking one of the medals they had pinned on his jacket off of it and turning it over in his hands.
âWe did say someoneâs gotta be there to pick up the pieces when all the fighting was over,â said Gabe, âIâll be honest I was hoping theyâd have someone other than us picked out by now, too, butâŚâ he shrugged, âThe way I figure it, it might as well be us. Someone else might mess it up.â
âYouâre handling it a lot easier than I am,â said Jack.
âNot as easy as you think,â Gabe gestured with his mug. âSecond cup,â he said flatly.
Jack snorted again then downed the last of his own coffee in a sharp, burning gulp. âIâm glad youâre here, Gabe,â he said quietly.
âPsh, yeah well youâd be pretty screwed without me,â said Gabe.
âHey now, is that any way to talk to a CO?â said Jack.
âDonât worry, Iâm fucking the Strike Commander,â Gabe delivered the line with perfect deadpan while sipping his coffee.
This managed to get a longer more genuine laugh out of Jack which eventually faded into an exhausted chuckle. ââŚgod, Iâm terrified,â Jack said at last.Â
âSame,â said Gabe with a shrug, âBut we got this, right?â he held his mug over to Morrison.
Jack grinned and clinked his own empty mug with Gabeâs. âYeah. We got this.â
Paris by the Chainsmokers
Just imagine Gabriel singing it to Jack. Maybe when they're in the SEP? And then, when Reyes is Reaper, he can't get the goddamn song out of his head. Or Reaper and 76 facing each other across the battlefield and 'Paris' drowns out all other sounds for them.
