He stood over the casket, adorned in the Rose King’s attire: a satin-like dress shirt under a black vest with a red tie draped around his neck; black pants he wore with shoes to match.  Against his back, a cape the people had made for him with gold inlaid embroidery and swirls that looked like tree roots.  A rose hung from the chain around his neck near his right shoulder and another was held in his hand.

Jack had sat all night, as the funeral came to a close and asked that they wait until the next morning to bury him.  He had not slept for days, merely napping here and there to keep up with the rest of the world and the settings of the palace.  He’d barely moved from the spot.  As the sun rose against the stained glass and shined against the Rose King’s pale face, Jack leaned over the casket and pressed a kiss to Ray’s forehead.

Jack swallowed the lump in his throat.  Now there was a question that he’d wished no one would ask him in public.  Yet, here he was in the Throne Room, watching the Rose King answer questions as the nobles did on a daily basis.  He admired their efforts, though he doubted he’d ever be able to do something like that.

“He is...one of the most brilliant men I have ever has the fortune to meet.  He is kind, brave, selfless and will do whatever it takes to save his kingdom from falling to the hands of a tyrant.  The Rose King has saved my life, more than once I’m afraid,” he chuckled.  Jack looked down at his fingers, a small blush creeping up his cheeks.
