The Playlist
The room is still and quiet, with only gentle snores coming from the pile of bedsheets and duvet under which you're buried. The alarm on your phone goes off, and you're unsure whether it's still a dream or the waking world. Face smushed into the pillow, you reach out blindly to quiet the damn thing down.
Then, nine minutes later, you hit snooze again.
When your phone twirls around your bedside table for the third time, you completely ignore it, letting it sing the morning praises. That is, until it falls down over the edge. Somehow, still half-asleep, you catch it before it reaches the floor. You smile weaklyâRex would have been impressed, whistling low if he saw it.
Your eyes fly open wide.
"Oh, shit!" You yelp, scrambling to unlock your phone but it declines to recognize your face.
Yesterday before falling asleepâor was it already today, doesn't really matter nowâyou've texted him. But you don't remember a word of it, and that's what terrifies you. You were so out of it you might have given him the nuke codes. After a few attempts you finally unlock the damn phone and go straight to your message thread with Rex.
explosions guy
3 new messages
Cold sweat runs down your spine. There is no way to take whatever you've written back now anymore, and to make matters worse, he's responded almost immediately. You gulp down, wondering if you should read it now, or maybe after coffee and a hearty breakfast.
Then you break out in laughter. What difference does it make? You're feeling nauseous anyway, and whatever his reply is, your heart is beating so fast how it does after three energy drinks.
"Fuck it" you sigh and open the chat.
You scan your messages first, an uncomfortable reminder of your sorry state, cringing at your own words. You might have slipped a little too much honesty in there.
Compared to your wall of text, his messages are short and straight to the point.
Rex misses you and wants you to come over.
A hollow thud follows after you fall out of the bed right on your ass. But there's no time to waste and sulk over your clumsiness. You start going through the piles of clothes on the floor, searching for something that doesn't stink and is somewhat presentable.
Living in the redhead's room proves to be a terrible idea when it comes to wardrobe options. In a hurry, you put in the earpiece out of habit, throw Rex's zip up hoodie over your pajamas and head to your own room. Thank god it's literally next door.
When you run out to the hallway, you yelp when you hear the familiar voice in your ear.
"No, fuck, no." You catch your head, your fingers digging into your skull. "I don't have time for your lectures now, I have toâ"
"In fifteen minutes I'm teleporting you to the Pentagon," Cecil cuts in. His tone is clipped, but not cruel.
Oh.
"You're not going to chastise me for my latest antics? Or missing therapy?"
"I have more pressing matters. Now, get ready. In fifteen minutes sharp I want to see you in the control room ready for the jump."
Even if you wanted to bark something back to the boss, you hear a slight crackle that tells you he turned off the channel.
Now you have even less time than you anticipated. At least it's the same direction you were headed to, so you won't have to spend hours on the jet flying to D.C. Still, you're not thrilled with whatever Cecil is going to throw your way. Hopefully, it will be a quick, solo thing.
Exactly twelve minutes later you're chewing hurriedly on a rice waffle while on your way to the control room. Somehow, you managed to have the fastest shower in your life, chosen the world's most okayest outfit and told Rudy you're having a meeting with Cecil.
With a little less than two minutes to spare, you start typing a response to Rex, but decide against it, deleting every word. Who knows how long the briefing will take. And Rex is the type of guy who loves surprises, so it'll be even better.
It hits your nose first, the sharp smell of electricity, followed by a blue crackle, and there he is. Judging from his face, brows furrowed over the icy cold blue eyes, it's not going to be a quick thing. It never is, with him and his undercover missions.
You groan and walk up to the man, he grabs your arm without a word, and then both of you are gone, leaving behind yourselves only a charge rippling through the air.
You will never get used to being teleported.
It fucks up with your head, your stomach and your whole sense of self. A large, white door to the conference room materialize first in your eyes. Only after a few seconds do you actually feel the cold, smooth floor underneath your feet. You look down, confused.
Shit.
You forgot to put on proper shoes.
So here you are, about to meet with one of the most important people in the country, possibly to discuss a major threat; in fluffy, cow-shaped slippers.
Great.
"Coffee?" Donald greets you with a full cup ready in his hand. You smile and nod, thankful. Maybe it has the taste of old battery acid, but at least it's hot.
When you walk in, you recognize almost everyone. And just as you expected, everyone is wearing suits, meanwhile you're in an oversized hoodie and lounge clothes.
But there's one face you're seeing for the first time, and a handsome one at that. As you pass him, he smiles at you with his big, brown eyes and you mirror the expression instantly.
"Alright everyone, we have one hell of a situation," Cecil starts when everyone is seated and the lights are dimmed. The projector shows a map of Texas and New Mexico with too many pin points on them to your liking.
"Our intel tells us there's an organized crime group that seems to be specializing in kidnapping refugees coming to our country through the south border. They'reâ"
"Seriously?" You whine, slumping down in the uncomfortable chair. "That's why you dragged me here at 7 in the morning?"
"Are immigrants not important enough to you?" Cecil asks with a sly smile, one you know all too well.
"It's not that and you know it. It just doesn't seem relevant to, you know, the Global Defense Agency?"
"And if I tell you we believe they're kidnapping people and performing barbaric experiments on them in order to create super-abled killing machines ready to wreak havoc all over the world?"
A few chuckles can be heard coming from around the table.
"Go on," you mumble from behind your cup.
As Cecil continues, explaining the ins and outs of the whole gang profile, from the corner of your eye, you notice the new guy glaring at you. Every time your eyes meet, he doesn't look away, only nods at you. Until one time he winks at you, which, to your disliking, makes your cheeks go hot.
"Sir, if I may. I'd like to sum up what we know so far." The man gets up when the lights are turned on and you wince at the sudden brightness. Cecil gives him a sign to continue.
"You believe this group may have access to some internal GDA files on artificial recreation of superpowers, mainly the durability serums and grafting possibilities." He has a surprisingly noticeable southern drawl, thick and sweet like honey.
"Correct, Agent Blackwood."
"Why then instead of surrounding and capturing them, you want us just to do recon?"
"Hear, hear," you tap the table top a couple of times.
Someone has finally told Cecil what they think straight to his face. It's nothing short of impressive, and when the man sits down, he smooths down his tie and turn to you to mouth 'thank you'. This time, it's you who wink. He snorts quietly and then turns to Cecil who was watching you two have a silent exchange.
"I know you're rushing to see your boyfriend, Agent," Cecil shifts his stand to face you, narrowing his ever tired eyes, "but I believe we still owe you all a thorough explanation of the plan."
Again, the room fills with quiet cackles, and you furrow your brows and cross your arms like an upset kid.
"He's not my boyfriend," you mumble, trying to ignore the blood rushing to your face.
"Donald, would you take over?"
"Certainly." Donald gets the light and loads the next slide while Cecil quietly leaves.
"Agent Blackwood made a very good observation. We have enough suspicion to hold and question the group members. The thing is, we still haven't zeroed in on who exactly is in charge of such a wide-spanned group."
"So you don't even have main suspects?" You ask, voice laced with disbelief.
What the hell happened with this organization since you've joined the Guardians full time?
"That we do, but there's too many of them." Donald smiles weakly and goes to the next slide, revealing pictures of six men and two women. "And that's where you and Agent Blackwood come in. You will be traveling to the locations shown earlier, the hot-spots of kidnappings."
Donald jumps to the next slide with aliases for both of you. You don't bother reading through it, you know you'll receive printed out version anyway.
"There, firstly you'll be gathering data from the locals. After you find sufficient data, you'll be blending in their crowd as possible clients of theirs, willing to pay for their services or their⌠erm, soldiers," Donald makes an air quote at the description, "for lack of a better word."
"Got it." You straighten up, putting your coffee mug a bit too hard on the table, almost spilling the liquid gold. "Are you sending me to Texas or New Mexico then? And when?"
"I believe you misunderstood Mr. Ferguson, Agent" Blackwood trails off, and you realize you haven't even been properly introduced. You ponder for a few moments how much to reveal, but you decide on your real last name in the end.
"Pleasure," Blackwood replies with a stretched out hand. "Haven't heard of you before."
"I've been assigned to the field for a while now," you say and take his palm into yours. It's large, strong and rough. His handshake is firm but polite, and it's been a while since a man wasn't trying to assert dominance right upon the first touch. "What did you mean by misunderstanding?"
"Oh, just that we are assigned to the Texas locations together. Haven't you been told?"
You choke on your coffee, barely managing to swallow it. Of course you haven't been told, because you'd have made a scene. You have always done undercover ops on your own. With your abilities you don't need a second agent with you; you can easily blend in and spy without spoiling the mission.
"No, I think Mr. Stedman omitted that detail." You respond, voice dry and rid of any humor that seems to hold onto the agent.
"Don't hold that against him," Blackwood smiles, his eyes dragging up and down your body, "he's a busy man."
"No, of course." You wave a hand, trying to keep your voice flat and devoid of any emotion. "I get that."
"When are we leaving?" You turn to Donald now, trying to get all of the info before you erupt with anger.
"In a month, give or take." He slides two identical folders your way, the one with your name being a little thicker. "You two have to go over some additional training together. And for you alone, we have assigned a dialect coach here onsite."
"Thank you, Donald. Is there anything else?"
"Same as alwaysâdo not engage unless strictly necessary. We cannot risk you revealing your identities."
When the briefing's finally over after a few long hours, you exchange the minimum amount of pleasantries and barge into Cecil's office without knocking.
The Director is sitting with his legs up on his desk, nursing a drink in his hand. He looks like he was expecting you, hence something to take the edge off.
"I gather you've been told already." He doesn't grace you with even one look of his empty, blue eyes.
"Why?" You ask simply, tone cold and measured.
The glass clinks gently against the ebony desk as he puts it away, his legs following suit and landing on the floor with a quiet thud. He sits up, straightens his back and brings both of his hands in front of his half-scarred face. You know the pose all too well, he always does it when he wants you to know it's final.
"Because you're a liability."
You gasp, raising your arms up. But no words come from you, and your arms flail down. Because as much as you'd like to prove him wrong, you know deep down in your gut that he's right.
"So why send me at all? Am I not needed in the Guardians?"
There's a long, heavy pause, filled with all of the unsaid grudges.
"The team is afraid of you." Cecil says, and you swear you hear a hint of disappointment in his voice.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" Your hands start trembling and you curl them into fists to hide the tremor. "Did Zandale come and whine about me to you?"
"I'm not going to name anyone. There are protocols."
"You and your fucking protocols," you scoff, planting both of your hands on the wooden desk. The furniture piece starts slightly rocking under your fingertips, your powers quietly humming in your veins. "You only use them when they fit you."
The Director sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose, seemingly unbothered by your scare tactics.
"Is that all, Agent?"
"For now," you say through clenched teeth and turn on you heel. But before you reach the door, you hear Cecil get up from the desk.
"I don't I think I have to tell you it's a classified operation."
You don't look back when you slam the door with all your might.
The moment you're out, you're met with a wall of muscle right in front of your face.
It's Blackwood.
"We'll be seeing each other more often now," he smirks, gazing at you with a bit less professionalism he's shown in the conference room. You take a good look at him as well.
The suit he's wearing seems expensiveâthe fabric not too shiny, but not to dull, either. It hugs his large frame in all the right places, and you hate that you notice it. His square face is framed by locks of blond, wavy hair. There's also a faint scar going over both of his lips. Must be a great conversation piece.
"I guess so," you sigh, and it comes out meaner than you expected. It's not the poor guy's fault you've been tricked.
"I promise I won't waste your time," he holds out both of his hands in front of him, flashing you a toothy grin.
"Sorry, it's just⌠I usually go undercover alone. I'm not used it, is all."
"We should stay in touch." He hands you a slick black card. It says only 'Thomas Blackwood' and below the name is a phone number.
"That a private or a work card?"
"Whatever you'd like it to be," he winks at you again.
Maybe you'll get along just fine then.
"Oh, look who we have here!" Eveline grins from ear to ear when she sees you walking out from the elevator. "Levi, Annabelle, come here!"
"Hi y'all, it's so good to see you too," you wave to the nurses as they gather around the reception desk. "I finally had the time to come and visit Rex."
The man and two women exchange knowing looks.
"And Rae, of course. Her too." You add quickly, chuckling nervously. Who are you trying to fool, them or yourself? "How is she?"
"Rae's still in a coma, darling." Levi leans in closer with an apologetic smile, resting his forearms on the counter. "But the doctors said they might be waking her in a few weeks. She's been healing pretty well."
"Thanks Levi." You reach out and squeeze his arm once, genuinely thankful. "Can I come over to Rex now?"
"Oh sure, honey. But we moved him now to a regular unit, room 17. Do you want me to take you there?" Annabelle offers, already halfway up from her chair.
"No need. I know my way around here," you gesture with your hand she doesn't need to get up, "but thank you."
"He's still in R&D now, but he should be coming back any minute now." Levi adds, glancing at the clock behind his back.
"I'll wait in his room then." You pat the counter and head towards the staircase. Using an elevator for one floor seems pointless.
As you climb up the stairs, the folder feels heavy in your hand, heavier than a dozen of pages should be. You clutch it close to your chest as you pad towards the new room, counting the doors down until you reach number 17.
One month.
And then you're off for God knows how long.
This type of recon can stretch for weeks, if not months. It doesn't help that you'll be spending this time with a man who seems way too happy that you're his designated partner. It also doesn't help you're kind of excited about it as well.
If the nursing staff wasn't there to tell you Rex was moved, you'd have found his room anyway. The smell of sleek paper from dozens of magazines scattered across the room is unmistakable, and would have lead you to him anytime.
When you walk inside, you notice a sofa instead of that plastic chair from hell. Your lip corners curl up; it must have been Rex's request. You flop down heavily, throwing the folder on the cushion next to you, and you wait.
Seconds stretch into minutes, and you're already fidgeting with the zipper. If you're this restless after less than ten minutes, you can't even begin to imagine how Rex must have felt for all these weeks.
And soon, he'll have to go through that again. But maybe he'll be out by then. Busy with hero life, flashing his crooked smile towards fans cameras, pranking Rudy to all his heart desires. The vision makes you snort; a miniature clone of Rex being goofed on by big, OG Rex.
You hear it first, the sound of a wheelchair against the linoleum flooring two floors down. The rhythmical footsteps of a nurse, the way he nips at the armrest's leather, bored out of his mind. You wonder if they have already told him you're waiting for him, or if you get to surprise him after all. Judging by how talkative the staff is here, there's a big chance they have already spoiled it.
"Ban!" Rex almost jumps out of the wheelchair when he notices you laying on the sofa.
Surprise saved.
You're up momentarily, grinning back at him. Then he's standing in a blink too and tumbles onto you, catching you in a tight hug which knocks all air out of your lungs. It takes you a second to hug him back, curling your arms around his neck in a warm embrace.
"You're walking," you notice, your voice muffled, your mouth in the crook of his neck.
"And you're here," he quips, his lips brushing your hair with every word.
Neither of you are planning on letting go anytime soon. Your eyes flutter close, and you let out a sigh of relief, feeling all of the tension of these last few weeks melt away from your body. When your body starts going limp against his, he winces.
"Oh God, I'm sorryâ" you jump off like you've touched fire, but then come up close again, scared he might fall.
"I'm not that weak anymore, y'know?" Rex says, but doesn't oppose more when you put his arm around your shoulders and help him walk to bed.
"Just let me do something nice for once."
"For once," he echoes, stifling a laugh.
"I see they can't help you with the asshole problem," you quip when he nestles against a giant pillow.
Normally, he'd bark back something equally petty and stupid, but it doesn't. Instead, he's just looking at you with soft features, eyes glimmering with more life and hope you've seen in a long while.
That's when you notice the change in his appearance.
His right eye is almost back to normal, only a couple of blood specks left. The fresh scars on his face are still shiny, will all the stitches removed. Gone is the metal brace around his head, revealing more hair growth than you've expected after only a few weeks. They are bit of an awkward length, but with that speed he'll be back with a man bun in a month or two.
Your smile falters.
You're probably going to be thousands of miles away when he's discharged. You're most likely to be gone when Rae is woken from her induced coma as well.
"Hey," Rex's voice comes soft around the edges, careful, like he knows what you're thinking. "You alright?"
"Hm? Yeah, no." You force a smile on your face and you pray he doesn't see right through you. "Justâhad an early morning."
Whether he sensed you're lying or not, he's not pushing, just gazing upon you with those big, evergreen eyes.
"Me too," the redhead sighs, sinking deeper into the pillow. "They had me at 6 in the fucking morning in R&D."
"Why were you there anyway?"
"Okay, hold your panties," he grins, the upturn of his lips all cocky and smug. It would be a lie to say you didn't miss that view. "You're not going to believe this shit."
"Good that I'm not wearing any then," you say with an exaggerated wiggle of your brows.
A deep red creeps up his neck as Rex clears his throat, fidgeting with the duvet cover thrown hastily over his legs.
"You can't just say shit like that," he huffs, raking a hand through his unruly, spiky hair.
The giggle that comes out your mouth is nothing short of juvenile.
"Are you going to tell me or what?"
Rex looks around the room, like he's gauging the level of suspense from an imaginary audience. You wait, patiently, letting him have this moment of fun. You owe him that much.
"I'm getting a new hand!" The tanned hero announces triumphantly, raising his arms up in a 'ta-dah!' gesture.
You blink once at him, then cock your head to the side, knitting your brows together.
"Huh?"
"I've just been fitted, at the R&D." Rex stumbles over his words, practically vibrating with excitement. "Turns out, GDA can do fucking anything."
"Rex, that'sâŚ" You trail off, failing to find good words. It shouldn't have such a conflicting effect on you, yet it does. "How do you feel about it?"
The redhead opens his mouth, then closes it, looking at you a tad disappointed, shocked, even. It's not the reaction he was expecting.
"I'm fucking stoked," his voice goes up higher, bewildered to even be asked such a question. "It really fucking sucks not having your dominant hand, you know? Even picking your nose is no fun anymore."
"Eww," you drawl, swatting him on the leg.
"Oh, stop it." He catches you by the wrist, leaning in closer with a mischievous grin. He's so close you can count his freckles, make out every single scar, new and old. "Everyone picks their noses and you won't make me change my mind."
You snort, shaking your head with warm laughter bubbling up in your throat. "That's not a hill I'm planning to die on."
His skin is warm against yours, his fingers still curled around your wrist. Your eyes meet and for a second you forget how to breathe. It's been a while since you could lose yourself in his emerald irises. With the broken blood vessels healed, the sheer beauty of his eyes pops up again.
The thick atmosphere breaks when your phone slips out of your pocket, hitting the floor with a worrying sound. You clear your throat and the redhead lets go so you can reach your rude device.
"Are you not happy for me?" Rex shifts, rubbing the back of his neck when you look up from the floor.
"Of course I am, Rex. It's not that."
"Then what is it?" He asks quieter now. Your throat starts to get thick at the change in his tone.
"I justâŚ" You look down at your hands in your lap, clutching your phone. Taking a deep breath in, you search for the right words. Only when you find them, your eyes drag upwards to his face, the sad story of his life written down in scars and bruises. "Do you ever think about our ties with the GDA?"
The question hangs heavy in the air, the silence loaded as he mulls over all the possible answers.
"What do you mean?" He finally says, deciding on a safer choice of a follow up.
"Well, whatever happens to usâthey can put us back together. Again. And again. Until there's nothing of us left. And even then, we will still be working for them."
His thick brows knit together over his pretty eyes, now tainted with a drop of sadness. And it pains you to know you're the reason of anything else other than joy, especially in his current state. The redhead opens his mouth, but only a choked splutter comes out of it.
"What else would we do?"
You have to look away or else the lump in your throat will turn into a sob.
"There's more to life than being a hero, Rex." You say, voice small and broken.
"Maybe for you."
You don't need to see him to know how he's feeling now. You reach for his hand, but decide against it and instead hide it in your pocket.
"I didn't mean it like that."
"Then why did you say that?" Rex raises his voice a little, not cruel or angry, just hurt.
Mustering up some courage, you look him in the eyes again, fighting the tremble in your chin. This time you take his palm into both of your hands. "You deserve more. We deserve more. More than just giving our blood, youth and health for a lost cause."
Rex lets out a long exhale through his nose, resting his head on the soft pillow with closed eyes. When he opens them, he's looking at the ceiling with a weak smile, not the usual one that matches him like a damn glove.
"That must have been a really fucking early morning for you."
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sour your mood."
"Don't sweat it," he turns his head toward you, face more relaxed now. "I kinda missed your doomer vibes."
"And I missed you, Rex."
"I can tell," the redhead smirks and catches the fabric of his hoodie between his fingers.
"It's just cozyânone of my sweatshirts fit me the same way."
"Whatever makes you sleep at night." He quips and pinches your cheek.
It's easier this way, when you fall into your usual back and forth with him. If nothing else, you've missed that the most.
"Since I'm already here, how about you show me your latest hits and misses from your beloved magazines?"
"I thought you'd never ask," he squeals like a child and grabs a copy from the bedside table, moving on the bed to give you space to hop in.
You think about it for exactly two seconds, then you're toeing your slippers off, fitting against Rex's arm like a puzzle piece. His eyes follow to the floor, one brow cocked up.
"Weren't you cold on the jet in these?"
"Oh, no. Cecil teleported me to the GDA."
"How kind of him," Rex mumbles under his breath. Then, more serious, "What did he want?"
"WellâŚ" You trail off, playing with the hoodie string, the metal part cold in your hands.
"I guess it's connected to that folder on the sofa?"
Shit.
"Yeah, it is." There's no point in lying now. Not that there ever was.
"And I assume you can't tell."
You hum, nodding your head solemnly.
"Even if I ask real pretty?" Rex tries again, absolutely butchering his attempt at puppy eyes.
"Cecil's orders," you bring your hands up in surrender.
The redhead makes a sound reminiscing a cackle, then opens the magazine on his lap.
"I'll get this out of you one way or another," he mutters under his breath, loud enough for you to hear
"You can try. Now, let's see the 10 Fails in DIY Home Renovations. I can hear it calling my name."
You don't know how much the time has passed. You've been making fun of the spreads and questionable decor choices for hours on end, as well as filling him on the hero life gossip. In return, Rex has been telling you all about his last weeks in the hospital wing. He's the only person you know who can make such a non-story interesting.
The most peaceful hours you've had in a long while.
"What you said about the GDA beforeâŚ" Rex trails off when you finish going through a fourth magazine.
"Yeah?" You gaze upward from a bathroom spread and find him with a stern look on his face.
"I've been thinking about it." His tone is colder now, and he's staring down at his stump.
"And?" You nudge him gently on the arm when he doesn't continue for a while.
"Before Cecil told me about the prostheticâŚ" When he looks up to the ceiling, you notice his eyes are glassy now. "I was scared shitless."
You close the magazine and put it away before shifting on the bed, turning your whole body towards him.
"Why?"
"'Cause without my hand I'd be useless for the rest of my life."
Blood almost fills your mouth with how hard you bite down on your lips.
"RexâŚ"
A cross look flashes his face, "Don't 'Rex' me, it's true. I have no other skills."
He closes his eyes shut tight, an exasperated sound coming deep from his chest.
"What would I even do?" He almost shouts, all vexed and heated.
"You could do literally anything you'd like. Besides, you wouldn't be alone in this. I'd help you. Eve, too. Hell, maybe even Mark. I know you two have beef, but he's a good guy."
"Oh, right." Rex chuckles nervously, most of his frustration fading away as he rubs the back of his neck. "I forgot to mention. Me and Mark are besties now."
Your brows shoot up almost to your hairline, and you blink once, twice, sitting up straighter.
"Yeah, I know. Took me by surprise too."
"I did not expect that on my bingo card," you admit, poorly hiding your growing grin. Then, you change position, resting your head on the giant pillow next to Rex's head. It's so soft and cozy, reminding you of neglecting your sore muscles and healing ribs.
"He visited me a few weeks ago." The hero notices you're much closer than just a few seconds before and shifts, lying on his side. He's so close his warm breath tickles your nose.
"That's it?" You press on with a smirk.
Rex rolls his eyes and sighs, "Aaand he brought me snacks."
This time you break and barely stifle a laugh. "You're impossibly easy to win over for someone this stubborn."
"Do you know how tragically boring the food is here?" He whines in an overtly dramatic tone.
"You mean healthy?"
"Potato, potato." A lazy smirk flashes across his features.
Silence that follows is easy, light and familiar. You let this last for a while, trying to get as much of it as possible before you're shipped to your very dangerous mission. And the suspects are not the worst threat in it.
When the weight of his gaze starts becoming uncomfortable, you break the silence.
"Rex?"
"Hm?"
"How do you feel now? Knowing you'll get a prosthetic, and all."
He doesn't answer right away. Instead, he starts playing with the loose threads on the cuff of his hoodie surrounding your arm.
"Terrified."
That's a level of vulnerability you did not see coming.
"Why?"
"I almost died fighting the lamest criminals on Earth, Ban. If I wasn't good at my job then, what's the new hand going to change?"
Instead of showering him with solutions or empty promises, you let him marinate over his thoughts in the safe haven of shared silence. It seems to be just the thing he need, as he doesn't say anything for a while, just stares blankly at the bed sheet where his right hand is just a hair away from yours. Your eyes are fixed there too, but you don't dare move.
"Stay the night?"
You glance at the clock over the door, and you curse under your nose when you see how late it is. Blowing a raspberry, you lift yourself up on your elbow with intent to get up, but he stops you, pulling you back down.
"You know I can't." Even if you want to sound frustrated, the smile stretching across your face betrays you.
"I'm pretty sure they have backups of our suits here. Plus, I don't think Cecil will teleport you back, and before Rudy or whoever gets here toâ"
"Okay, fine." You cut his ramblings short, putting a hand over his mouth. "But I'm taking the sofa."
"We haven't even fought about the dirty dishes yet and you're already sending yourself to the naughty bed?" He cackles, taking your hand away, but keeping it close to his chest. You flatten your palm against it, feeling the steady beat of his heart turn into something faster, wilder.
"Rex, you sleep like a starfish." You deadpan, not even a little angry he managed to make you stay. "The only naughty bed is the one with you in it."
"You know I'd love to deliver on that end, but I still need a couple more weeks before I can deliver."
"Oh God," you groan, but there's no irritation in it, "do you ever think about literally anything else?"
Rex looks up at you from below his long, auburn lashes with a devilish smirk.
"Rarely."
The private bathroom door unlocks with a rough click and you step out in your pajamas, which is just Rex's tee and boxers. Asking him for something to sleep in brought back bittersweet memories of the one, sweet night you've shared. It hasn't even been that long, yet it feels like a lifetime ago.
Still, it's better than a walk of shame to the nurses and begging for the GDA thin, scratchy sweats.
"You're staring," you mutter with a smirk, folding your clothes and putting them into a neat pile on the dresser.
"I'm admiring," Rex corrects you, not taking his eyes off of you. "And I still think you're doing your back a major disservice sleeping on that thing."
"Yeah, well." The makeshift bedding proves useful when you hide half your warming up face beneath it. "We don't want to be the hot gossip in the hospital wing, do we?"
"We already are."
There it is again.
The long gaze, one that tells you there's more he'd like to say but hasn't found the right words for it just yet. The one that makes you wonder what actually goes on inside his head. The one that makes you realize, there's so much more to him, and you don't even know the half of it.
You take one last, deep look into the vastness of his emerald eyes before getting the light.
"Goodnight, Rex."
"Night," he yawns, mumbling your name.
It's the scream that wakes you.
"No, stopâleave her aloneâ" Rex mumbles through sleep, completely delirious, tossing all over the squeaky bed.
"Rex?" You sit up and immediately scan the room for threats, but there aren't any.
Before you have the time to think about, you're already climbing into his bed, resting your hand on his forehead. Initially, he tenses at your touch, but it doesn't take long until he starts to relax. You brush your fingers through his spiky, red hair, soothing whatever nightmare he's having.
It seems to do the trickâhis ramblings come more sporadically, body softening against yours, his legs and arms at ease at last.
"Mm, Ban?" He reaches out, feeling your body, as if to make sure you're really here.
"Shh, it's okay. You had a nightmare," you whisper, not stopping the caresses, letting him curl his arm around your waist. Only this once, you can't just leave him now all aloneâit would be cruel.
Rex nuzzles into you, his head resting heavily on your chest.
"Stay. Please."
Just this once.

The playlist
The walk to Rexâs room drags on.
The corridor seems to have no end in sight; once busy with people and medical machinery noises, itâs eerily quiet now. The only sound bouncing off the walls are your shoes against the vinyl flooring, and the beat of your heart, right in your ears.
Levi offered to go with you, but you know itâs a road you have to climb alone.
With every step bringing you closer to your destination, thereâs a growing discomfort. Since you last saw him, you didnât have much time to process that whole ordeal. Regret gnaws steadily at your ribs, reminding you that you were the one to push Rex past his limits, asking him that moronic question.
Do you remember anything?
Why the fuck would you say that? Just when he woke up?
Stupid. So incredibly, utterly stupid.
You almost miss the door to his room, lost in thought, thinking of ways to punish yourself. Taking a few steps back, you stop in front his door. Itâs left open ajar, a silent invitation.
And you were invited. Youâre not an intruder, youâre not overstepping. Yet you still hesitate, hand inches from the door, ready to push it fully open any moment now.
âYou cominâ or are you glued to the floor?â Comes Rexâs voice from inside the room, vibrant, alive, and clear as day. Stepping in, you canât help the slightest upturn of your lips.
âYou wanted toââ
âWhat are you wearing?â Rex shoots a brow up, pointing at you with his only hand, smirk already on his face.
âAt least Iâm fully dressed, unlike someone else.â You mirror his expression and walk towards him, steps slow and measured, scared not to ruin this fragile stability.
âLike it bothers you that much.â
You huff a laugh, and sit on the chair by his bed, the one youâve spent countless hours in, reading to him when he was still unconscious.
He rolls his eyes and sighs, mock-irritated and leans out, grabbing the chair between your legs and pulling you closer with a slight wince.
âI thought we were past that stage,â he mutters, but the smirk never leaves his swollen face.
âBut for real, why are you wearing these?â Rex catches the thin fabric between his fingers, but quickly takes his hand away, almost bashful. Maybe heâs still in some shock response? Itâs so unlike him to retreat like a shy child.
âI may have voluntarily admitted myself.â
Rex stares at you for a while, eyes unamused. âAre you out of your mind?â
âMight be,â you chuckle. âA lot of fucked up things happened lately, so itâs not an entirely wrong call.â
Rexâs grin falls down, his eyes following suit, staring at his stretched legs. âYeahâŚâ
âAnyway,â you clear your throat, suddenly feeling shy as well. âYou wanted to see me?â
âI did. I do. Listen, Iâm sorry I freaked outââ
âYou must be out of your mind,â you point a finger at him with a sly smile. âThereâs nothing to be sorry about.â
You rub the back of your neck, unsure whether to look at his face or if itâs going to be taken as staring at his clearly changed features. âIn fact, I should be the one apologizing.â
âNo, come on. I made you cry. And I hate when people cry. Makes meâŚâ he gestures vaguely with his stump, still used to having his dominant hand attached. â...feel things.â
You only give him a weak smile; itâs surprising he remembers it that well, given how highly medicated he was.
âNot the first, nor the last time.â
Rex gasps, putting a hand to his chest. âTalk about putting salt on the wound.â
Usually, thatâd be it. Brushing off whatever feels uncomfortable. So it comes as a surprise when Rex continues, voice smaller than you ever heard.
âStill, I mean it. â
You take his hand in yours, the need for closeness winning over the fear of crossing a boundary you set up yourself.
âItâs okay, Rex. Really.â
His eyes are glued to where your fingers are grazing over his knuckles. When you realize what youâre doing, you move back, not looking him in the eyes. Silence follows, the kind of one that lingers like the quiet before the storm. Heavy, thick, and almost uncomfortable given the current state of your relationship.
âHowâs Rae?â Rex breaks the silence first.
Somethingâs off, yet you canât put a finger on it. Heâs saying all the things heâd always say, but the tone hits different. It comes deep within from a place inside him he never truly visits.
âStill unconscious.â
His jaw is working overtime, rigid and grinding. While heâs quiet, lost in thought, you take a good look at him.
The metal brace surrounding his head is a stark reminder of the loss of his precious hair. The man-bun was his trademark, and without it he felt incomplete. And you hate that you feel this way, given he probably feels the same way too.
The bloodshot-eye barely remained green, given how swollen and red it was. With his good eye, the contrast was disturbing, making him look almost possessed. Wait, no. Stop.
What the hell is wrong with you?
âDid they tell you anything?â Rex doesnât look at you, only eyes the stash of his magazines and the duffel bag full of his belongings. He doesnât know that you hand-picked every single thing in it, using your brain to the fullest, trying to remember his favourite clothes and other comfort objects for Mark to bring.
âNot much, really,â you fidget in the chair, that restlessness from earlier coming back to haunt you. âOnly that itâll take a long time for her to recover. Longer than you.â
âWhat can I say,â a faint of his usual bravado shines through his pale, swollen face. âIâm hard to get rid of.â
âYeah, you bet your lucky ass you are.â Gently, but firmly, you bump his good arm with a fist.
âOuch?â He winces with a lopsided grin, his left arm intuitively coming up to soothe the sore spot, only for him to realize thereâs no hand to curl around his shoulder.
You move closer, the need to comfort him winning over, but you immediately lean back when you notice his smile faltering, replaced by a blank, hollow expression on his face.
âFuck. Sorry, Rex. Iââ
âDonât.â
You bite on your bottom lip, looking down at your well worn-out sneakers.Â
âDo you wannaâŚâ you lift your head slightly, just enough to glance at him from above, treading carefully. âTalk about it?â
âNothing to talk about.â Rex grits out, and you can see heâs holding back. His tone is sharp, and it would cut you right open, but the fact that even in this state, in such a place, where heâd have every right to lash outâhe doesnât. And that softens the blow, even if only a little.
âRight. Yeah, of course.â The chair's legs scrape the linoleum flooring as you push it further away to give him more space. âBut if youââ you bite your tongue; youâre already pushing, ââjust remember Iâm here.â
âAnd thatâs more than enough.â Rex sets his tired, sunken eyes at you, at last. Thereâs a hint of gratefulness but also something much darker. âMore than I deserve, anyway.â
Your breath hitches, your chest twisting painfully at his words.
âDonât say that,â you frown, your voice barely above a whisper.
âWhy not?â Rex snorts, but itâs far from humorous. âItâs the truth.â
âI finally got what was coming to me,â he adds with a bitter smile, his brows knitted together. âFucking penance, or whatever the shit.â
âYou canât be serious.â
âOh yeah? Even though Iââ Rex tilts his head away sharply, hiding poorly the jolt of pain it caused. âNevermind.â
You blink at him once, twice. Then, because you simply have to, you reach out to his hand, but he flinches away. He may be badly wounded, but his reflexes are still sharp.
âYou donât have to atone for anything, Rex.â
He sighs loudly, the air leaving his chest heavily, âI donât want your pity.â
Rex is practically vibrating with all the pent up grief and anger, and you can tell heâs trying his damn best not to take it out on you. Despite his efforts, you hide your head in your hands, letting out a quiet, frustrated groan.
âItâs not pity. Iâm trying to talk some sense into you.â
He scoffs, half-amused, half in denial, when he turns to face you, leaning over the bedframe, crowding your space.
âAfter everything Iâve done?â
âEspecially after that.â Your tone comes more bitter than you planned, but thereâs no going back now.
âWhy?â
You chew on your words, hesitant to tell him the truth. But one swift look at his state reminds you that any moment can be your last together.
âBecause Iâve already forgiven you a long time ago.â
âYou shouldnât have.â
âBut I did anyway.â
The steady beeping of his heart monitor picks up pace, his eyes turning darker, mouth twisted in a provoking grimace.
âThen I thought you were smarter than that.âÂ
You shake your head in disbelief, peering at him, chuckling low and dark.
âI see what youâre trying to do here, but Iâm not going to take the bait.â You spit slowly, clutching the armrest so tight your knuckles turn white. âIâll come back later, you definitely need some space.â
âYeah. Leave, like you always do. Like everyone does.â
Thatâs it, thatâs fucking enough. Youâre on your feet in no time, anger once again taking control over your body.
âGoddammit, Rex! Why are you acting like this?!â
âBecause I donât deserve to be here, let alone be forgiven!â
Your mouth gapes, and after a while you exhale loudly, only now realizing youâve been holding your breath. Rex is biting down on his lips, avoiding your eyes. His right hand comes up in his usual nervous manner, hoping to rake it through his hair, but it only finds his bare scalp.
âFuck!â He hits the mattress with his only fist, eyes closed tight.
Your chin trembles, but you fight back the urge to cry; not yet. The last thing he needs now are your tears. Especially as you notice him wiping his undereye angrily. Feeling like a flat tire, you slump back down to the chair, crossing your arms over your chest.
The rest of the time you spend there, you sit in silence, mulling over apologies, pleas and curses.
So much for a happy reunion.
â
Next day at the cafeteria, youâre sitting alone if not for a few people here and there, mostly staff. Youâre pushing your food over your plate, failing to force something down your throat.
Since youâve left Rexâs room yesterday (only thanks to Levi wheeling Rex off for some tests) youâve cried in Raeâs sterile room, then gone out, and bought a pack of cigarettes. You smoked two in a row, threw away the package, and then fought the shame of fishing it out of the trashbin in order to smoke two more.
That, little to no sleep and three cups of coffee are doing you no good; your body protesting, begging you for some real substance and quality rest. But you know yourself enough to realize youâre not going to swallow down anything before you sort this shit out.
âThis is stupid,â you mutter, as you scrape your food off your plate into the bin.
Your feet take over, muscle memory kicking in; at least one good thing came from being stuck in this dungeon for months. Two elevator rides, one fuckass long corridor and almost fainting from exertion later, youâre back at his door, hoping heâs there.
Taking one, long, grounding breath in, then slowly exhaling out, you knock. And you wait.
A rustle of paper can be heard, then comes his voice, muffled through the wall.
âCome in.â
âHey,â you open the door with your heart in your throat, but still donât step inside. âI think we should rewind and start over.â
Rex is in his bed, propped up on three pillows, an open magazine with the cover facing up on his lap. Heâs got new bandages on his stump, and his face is even more swollen, bruises blooming along his hairline and his bloodshot eye.
âYeah,â Rex glances at you before darting his eyes across the room. âI think so too.â
Thatâs an invitation enough and you take it, closing the door behind you with a gentle click. When you sit in the chair by his bedside, you hesitate for a moment before shifting it closer, your knees touching the mattress heâs on.
With a quiet wince, Rex turns to face you, putting his good hand right next to your leg, millimeters away from it. You can feel the heat radiating from him, your own body temperature rising with the closeness of his palm.
âI feel like an asshole for lashing out on you, itâs justââ
âShh,â you raise your hand to quiet him, his eyes following your movement. âItâs okay, Rex. I get it.â
âNo, fucking far from okay. Iâmââ
You sit on the edge of your seat, lean in and grab his cheeks in both of your hands, palms gentle so as not to cause him any more pain, staring deep into his soul. You can feel his warm breath on your nose, your faces inches from each other. For a brief second, his eyes flick down to your mouth and you canât help but do the same.
âRex.â Your voice is steady, soft, and grounding. Despite that, he tenses, bracing for whatever might come his way. It does something to you, knowing heâs always expecting the worst.
âYes?â His voice is barely above whisper.
âDo you trust me?â
His brows knit softly together, as much as the metal brace lets him.
âYeahâŚ?â
âThen please believe me when I sayâweâre fine.â
Rexâs eyes light up at first, only to get worried again, as if he canât believe that anything good can ever happen to him again. Still, thereâs a ghost of a smile pulling at his mouth.
âFor real?â
âYes.â
He lets out a deep, shaky breath, finally letting himself feel somewhat good, accepting that there's a sliver of good and hope in his miserable life. And for a moment, itâs like nothing bad ever happened between you two, just this quiet, intimate moment of forgiveness and acceptance. You realize youâre still holding his face and let go, feeling blood rushing to your cheeks.
âWeâre just tired and over the edge,â you note, leaning back from him, and you notice he inches forward, chasing your gentle touch before resting his back on the pillows.
âCanât disagree with that,â Rex chuckles, his trademark smirk settling on his face.
âNo matter what, Iâm here for you,â you smile weakly. âIâm your teammate. And your⌠friend.â
âThanks, Ban,â he replies, and catches himself a second too late, cringing. âErmâI meanâ can I⌠still call you that?â
The view of him being so sheepish is endearing, so rare and heartwarming you canât help but laugh. âOf course you can, you dork.â
And for a while, itâs just that. Quiet, warm, shared looks; shy but happy smiles painting both of your faces.
âOh, by the wayâyou left your book here.â Rex opens a drawer and takes out your favourite novel, the fragile covers looking brittle in his large hand. He reaches toward you with it, but on a second thought, brings it close to his chest, holding it like itâs an anchor.
âThat wasâI wanted toâwhen I first asked for you, I figured Iâd say thatâs the reason, but⌠thatâs a stupid lie, even for me.â
âYeah,â you agree, straightening your arm for the book. âEven for you.â
His eyes dart to your palm, your gentle fingers beckoning for the novel. When he places it in your hand, he doesnât take his away, not immediately. Emboldened by his shyness, you curl your other hand around his, and whisper, âLetâs read.â
Rex nods and flips the magazine sitting in his lap, diving back into a splash of bathroom makeovers. You pull your legs up, resting them on the side of the chair and start reading, curled up, and for once in a long time, relaxed.
But the silence doesnât last for long.
âRemember I told you I havenât ever been to a cinema?â The magazine rustles as he flips the page, not looking at you.
You glance at him from above your book with a raised brow.
âYeah, I do. When we watched Twilight. What about it?â
âYou know I grew up piss poor, right?â Rex states casually, but his tone was far from casual. He must have realized it too, leaning into the uncommon for him honesty and vulnerability. If you didnât know any better, youâd have thought the real Rex died and the GDA replaced him with a malfunctioning doppelganger. âBefore I was sold off by my parents, that is.â
The pages of your novel rustled as you closed it gently, gazing at him with a downturn to your lips. âIâm sorry, Rex.â
âIâm not.â He answers fast, too fast. âAnyway,â he lets out a deep sigh like he just dropped the heaviest weight off his shoulders. âI missed out on other things, too. Like schoolââ
Your mouth moves faster than your brain when you cut in. âHard not to notice.â
âQuiet.â Rex shushes you with a gesture, faint of a grin ghosting over his lips. âIâve also never been to a libraryââ
âAlso unsurprising.â This time, your quip is deliberate. Sarcastic, but not cruel.
And he knows it too, you can see it in his features when he tilts his head with a raised brow and a shit-eating grin. âDo you want to be friends or not?â
ââCourse I do.â You raise your hands in mock-surrender, ignoring the warm feeling blooming in your chest.
âIâve never celebrated any holidays,â he starts counting down on his right hand, ânever gone camping, never been to a museum, or a theatreâwait, Iâve run out of fingers.â
Before you can say anything he takes your hand and curls it into a fist, then straightening out each finger as his count continues. Itâs not the first time you two are sharing a normal, friendly touch. Then why does it feel like something from the past, every time his skin brushes past yours sending a serenade of tingles down your veins?
When Rex is done with the count of his lost chances of a normal childhood, his hand lingers on yours, the rough pad of his thumb tracing the lines of your knuckles. You look at your hand in his, how they fit each other like a damn glove. Then, your eyes meet, and your breath gets stuck in your throat. The way Rex gazes at you, with such profound fondness would make your knees buckle if you werenât sitting.
The moment breaks when he clears his throat and lets go of your hand, and you blink heavily at the loss.
âDid you sleep at all? You look like shit.â Rex is trying to maintain his usual bravado, but itâs not the same, part of his flair being gone.
âLikewise,â you scoff. And itâs all he needed to get his footing back, wicked grin forming on his face.
âWell, this guy stopped a nuclear event and took a bullet to the head. Whatâs your excuse, hm?â And then because he just canât stop himself, Rex pinches your cheek and adds with a mocking tone, âReading past your bedtime?â
You want to sound offended, but a smile creeps up your face when you roll your eyes and push his hand away gently, âScrew you.â
âBelieve me, Iâd love to.â Rex puts a solemn hand to his chest and this wins him an even bigger smile from you. âBut Iâm not exactly in great shape right now.â
âYou only ever think about one thing, donât you?â
âActuallyâwith the amount of free time I have now, Iâve been thinking about a lot of things.â His voice is big, bright and proud, just like before, the familiarity pulling at your heartâs strings like a puppet master. But you canât let one moment of nostalgia melt you, and you easily fall back into your usual banter.
âOh yeah, like what?â Your arms cross on your chest, nose scrunching up when you mock him. âSnacks? Paint colors for your future home? Boobs?â
âThat and much more.â His eyes turn a shade darker, and you almost miss it. Almost.
âWonât believe it until I hear it,â you say quietly, leaning in with a knowing smirk. Rex moves in closer too, mirroring your expression, only a tad softer than yours.
âAnd about you.â
That makes your breath hitch, and you freeze as he gauges your reaction, slowly, steadily closing the gap between you, his eyes flickering between yours and your lips. And then he stops, just millimeters away, his breath warming your already flushed face.
âRexââ
The doors click open quietly, and you both turn heads to see who dares to intrude, revealing a nurse peeking in.
âIâm sorry to interrupt, butââ the woman cuts herself off, brows creasing over her kind eyes. âBad moment?â
âNo,â Rex mutters, flopping back on his bed and you glance at him, disappointed.
âItâs time for your bath, Rex. But⌠I can come back laterââ
âItâs fine,â you get up so fast your book falls to the ground and your head starts spinning. âI was leaving anyway.â
Rex catches your wrist, his touch firm but with a dose of such conflicting tenderness you almost fall.
âIâll be seeing you, yeah?â
You pick up your book and place it on his bedside table, avoiding his gaze, his touch burning your skin. âYeah.â
You brush past the nurse whoâs giving you an apologetic look, but you raise your hand as if to say itâs alright, even though it clearly isnât.
Why does a woman have to bathe him; why not Levi?
When the door to your room closes behind you, you lean back on it, sliding down slowly until youâre on the floor, legs tucked to the side. Your head lulls down, bone-tired. Crawling on all fours to the bed, you decide to try and get some rest, hopefully.
When you curl up on the thin mattress, anxiety starts slowly creeping up, your mind racing, replaying every conversation you ever had with Rex that had even an ounce of realness to it. Itâs not like you can be angry with him, heâs still up to his neck in a trauma response, and possibly on high dosages of whatever painkillers they gave him.
But he seemed sound of mind, you had a normal conversationâas normal as you two can getâso why did he say that? He knows, despite how painful it might be, that itâs over, done. Signed, sealed, delivered.
After flipping from side to side like a pancake for God knows how long, you accept your fate and call for Katie, your designated nurse, asking for something thatâll let you sleep. When sheâs done with inserting your IV and admitting some zolpidem, the sweet relief of sleep takes you in its warm embrace.
â
âHey,â someone says your name softly, gently shaking you by your shoulder. âIâve got some breakfast here, you hungry?â
You open one eye and see Katie smiling down at you. Did she say breakfast?
âHow long was I asleep?â
âAbout 13 hoursââ
âWhat?!â You bolt upright, almost headbutting the tray Katieâs holding.
âYou definitely needed it, so donât be too harsh on yourself. The meds I gave you did half of the job anyway.â She puts the plate on your bedstands and turns to leave. At the door, she catches the frame and looks at you from above her shoulder with a nervous smile. âOh, and you have a visitor.â
She doesnât have to announce who it is. You know itâs him before you see him.
âWhat the fuck are you still doing here?â Cecilâs tone is sharp, like heâs royally pissed. But then again, when isnât he?
âCould ask you the same.â You mumble with your mouth full, chewing on the sourdough and the steaming, scrambled eggs. You donât grace him even with a single look, too busy devouring your brunch. âJust say what you gotta say and let me eat in peace.â
âBy the end of the day, youâre back in the game. No discussion.â
âFine.â
For a split second, you notice with the corner of your eye your answer surprised him, but he hides that as quickly as the feeling appeared.
âIâll have the jet transport you at 18:00 sharp.â
You chuckle at the military time given, and wave a hand at him in a mock salute. âSir, yes sir.â
For a boss that doesnât pay that much, he does expect an awful lot. And yeah, maybe you are in the âsaving the worldâ business, but that doesnât mean you canâtâor shouldnâtâtake a break once in a while.
When youâre done with your breakfast, you call for Katie and let her know youâll be discharging in the evening. She takes the tray and tries to hide her disappointment, as if she clearly knows youâd be better off staying here. But Cecilâs got a point; and the world ainât gonna save itself.
Since youâre leaving later that day, you already change into some comfy clothes, pulling Rexâs hoodie on as the last touch, his smell faint but still present on the fabric. And then youâre off the room, unhooked from the IV and other machinery. Your legs initially take you to Rexâs room, but you decide against it and turn on your heel, heading to Raeâs sterile capsule instead.
Only this time you donât get inside; putting on the hazmat suit isnât at the top of your dreams. So you stand in front of the glass, silently watching her breath through the oxygen mask, her heartbeat stable and steady, the green line going up and down, reminding everyone that sheâs still somehow alive.
âYou better wake up sooner than later, Rae.â Your voice is quiet, gentle, as you rest your head on the glass and sigh, exhaling slowly through your mouth. âAnd talk some sense into Rex, because apparently I canât do that anymore. Not like I ever could.â
Out of habit, you wait for Raeâs clever comeback, but you are met only with the sterile silence of the hospital corridor, monitor with her vitals beeping quietly from behind the glass. You force a tight smile and leave in the direction of the floor that Rexâs room is in, letting the harsh overhead lights lead the way.
When you reach his door, itâs wide open. This time, a small but genuine smile appears on your face as you pop your head quietly into the room. Rex doesnât notice you at first, deep into one of his interior design magazines. You watch him, not moving a muscle, as if any sudden movement might scare him off like a wild prey.
âI know Iâm pretty, but youâre kinda creeping me out,â Rex quips, not taking his eyes off the spread, but that cocky smirk is plastered on his less swollen face now.
âRare view, is all.â You cross your arms over your chest, leaning your shoulder on the doorframe.
âWhat is?â His brows raise, eyes suddenly behind a shadow, bracing for a blow. And for a second there, you think of some sarcastic comeback thatâll dig right under his ribs, but in the end you do no such thing.
âYou being all quiet and still.â Your honest admission comes quiet, measured, inspecting Rexâs face for any microexpression thatâd reveal his reaction. But he gives you nothing, so you add, âMaybe even at peace.â
Silence that falls after is warm, and familiar. The soft hush of nurses chatting in the background mingles with the quiet electric buzz of the machinery hooked up to Rex, and it feels like the first normal moment you two ever had.
âYeah,â Rex laughs shortly, the warm sound echoing around the walls. âNot like I had a lot of chances to ever sit down and just fucking⌠do nothing.â
âTell me about it.â Your quiet footsteps follow as you near the chair youâve spent more time than you care to admit for.
âShall we continue where we left off yesterday?â You ask, grabbing your book from his bedstand, sitting comfortably in the hospital chair (as much as it was possible to be comfy in that plastic atrocity). When he doesnât respond at first, it dawns over you, cold sweat running down your spine, the memory of where you two actually left off full in technicolor.
âActually,â Rex starts, rubbing the back of his neck with his only hand, âIâve been thinking.â
âUh-oh.â You try not to panic, which always makes you steer back into good olâ sarcasm.
âShut up.â He snorts, shaking his head; he ran head-first into it and he knows it. Still, you both grin like idiots at each other; crisis averted at once.
âSee, before I woke up from the surgery, I had a dream that you were reading one of my magazines. Out loud. To me.â
You glance inside and notice the spread is quite familiar. You recognize the awful all-yellow mudroom and snort.
âWasnât a dream.â
âNo?â The sheer surprise on his voice makes your heart skip a bit.
âIâve been here from the moment they got you in from that military base. Iâve read plenty to you while you were unconscious.â You lean in, tapping the open magazine in his lap. âIncluding this spread.â
His big, gleaming eyes follow the movement of your hand, then darting between the terrible design ideas and your face, his mouth falling slightly open.
â...really?â
Tilting your head, you relax back into the chair. âRealy really.â
Every and any opportunity is a good one to quote the cinematic masterpiece, Shrek.
âThatâs⌠strangely sweet of you.â Rex says under his breath.Â
âAre you sure youâre okay?â He insinuates, gesturing crazy around his head.
You shrug, âWell, Iâm here, arenât I? Alsoââ you narrow your eyes, pointing a finger at him, ââdonât get used to it.â
âI wouldnât dare,â he drawls, cheeky smile stretching across his face.
âSo. What was your idea, anyway?â
âMaybe you wanna⌠look through 10 Different Ways To Style Your Secluded Cabin together?â
âSounded awful lot like a proposal.â
âCan you justââ Rex groans, sliding a palm down his face when you start giggling, hiding your mouth behind your hand, your eyes squinting like the sun has brightened them with its morning rays.
âCâmere, smartass.â Rex pats the space to his right, scooting away, making space for you. Blood travels fast to your cheeks and you pray he doesnât notice. Your mouth flies open, then closes. He pats again, impatient like a little kid, who wants to have dessert not before, but instead of lunch.
âOh, come on. Weâre adults. And friends. Sit your pretty ass over here.â
Friends who almost kissed after one of them nearly died.
You take the empty space before quickly toeing off your sneakers, the mattress below you warm to the touch, your back fitting perfectly against the massive pillows and his steady shoulder.
âSo weâre doing global reading?â You ask, as you take the magazine into both of your hands.
Rex blinks once, twice, his bloodshot, swollen eye falling behind the healthy one. âI swear to God, you make me feel so stupid sometimes,â he mutters.
âDoes it have something to do with illiteracy?â He adds a moment later, a genuine question.
You move back to take a good look at him, surprised. Impressed even.
âActually, yes. Kinda. You may say itâs a method against illiteracy.â
Rex wiggles in a fraction closer, your arms soft against one another. âHow so?â
âWhen you read to a kid,â you start, reminiscing your smaller self in your dadâs lap with your favourite childhood book. âYou place the book so they can see the words as you read them aloud. This way they can learn the shape of the word instead of letter by letter.â
âSince my eye is fucked, itâd be nice to actually read these.â
The bedsheets rustle softly as you move to glance at him with your brows raised, half-shocked, half-unamused.
â...You havenât been reading them?â
âItâs kinda hard to read when everything is blurry like after 10 shots of tequila.â Rex sighs, adjusting the magazine to be lying atop his and your lap.
âI just thought itâs kinda hard for you to read, period.â You mutter with a smirk, nestling in better in the giant cushions propping you up.
âYouâre lucky youâre cute.â Rex pokes your side, touch almost ticklish, but the spot he touched blooms with warmth nonetheless. It shouldnât have that effect on you, not that kind of cheap talk he always talks, not after everything that happened. And yet, you feel blood surging to your face, blushing like a goddamn virgin.
His words hang between you, warm and honest, as Rex flips through the magazine in search of the secluded cabins article. He almost misses the page and your hand flies up to stop him. And you linger, feeling his rough skin peppered with cuts and scabs under your fingertips.
âAnd that Iâm temporarily out of service. Otherwise, youâd be sorry.â
Something deep inside, something you donât want to acknowledge or address yet again, tells you youâd like to be sorry.
â
The duffel bag digs into your shoulder, the weight of all unnecessary clothes and items dragging it down. You take one last look at your hospital room, checking if you didnât forget anything. Which, youâd prefer leaving a thing or two, having a justified reason to pop in thatâs not about Rex.
You adjust the strap and walk down the impossibly long corridor to the jet landing area, passing the reception where nurses are chatting vigorously about something seemingly exciting. When you near them, their voices hush down, and it tells you exactly whatâor rather whoâthey were talking about.
âIâm always torn to see our lovely patients go,â Levi turns to you with the kindest smile. âBut Iâm sure youâll be coming back anyway. Not for medical reasons, though, hopefully.â
âYeah,â you shrug, avoiding his eyes. âIâll drop by whenever I can to see my friends.â
âAbout your friend,â Katie drawls, tongue in cheek. âHe had a visitor yesterday. Another handsome boy, might I add.â
âBig, brown, puppy eyes, and the most naive face if I ever saw one,â Annabelle chimes in, resting her elbows on the reception counter.
Mark.
He mustâve come when you were dead asleep, wiped off your feet with the meds you were given.
âThey seemed to be good friends, too. Like you and that poor girl Rae, I mean,â Levi chuckles, and winks. Maybe at you, maybe at his coworkers, or all of you. âBut your friendship with Rex is special too, Iâm sure, sweetheart.â
âSuch good friends they talked girl problems,â adds a fourth nurse, and you recognize her to be the one that took Rex for his bath. You squint your eyes at her name card.
âEveline!â Annabelle pats her on the arm, bewildered. âEver heard of privacy?!â
âSorry,â she mutters, giving you a charged look.
Mark and Rex talked girl problems. And youâre a girl. Thatâs all you need to know, for now. Something to unpack on another day.
With a quick glance at the clock above them, you realize you have two minutes to get to the rooftop landing area.
âI gotta go, or else my boss is going to kill me,â you wave hurriedly, already on the move.
âHopefulyl not,â Katie sends you a genuine smile and you return the expression before picking up pace. The last thing you want today is to get chewed out by the military.
â
After hours that stretched so thin it almost ripped into pieces, youâre finally back at the base. You should be feeling at home, somewhat at least. But that gnawing feeling present in your gut since you entered the jet tells you otherwise. You hide behind your arm, eyes closed, hair flying wild as the jet takes off, gushes of frozen snow kicked up in the air, hitting your cheeks and exposed neck.
Thankfully, thereâs no welcome committee. Maybe Cecil didnât tell the team youâll be back, or maybe they just donât care anymore. Maybe a bit of both.
On the way to your room, you peek into the gym, only to see it empty and weirdly unkempt. Discarded clothes and empty isotonic drinks bottles scattered on the floor, the harsh smell of everpresent sweat gone from the rubbery floors. You twist on your heel and decide to check other places, like the lounge room and the kitchen. Also nobody there.
Perhaps theyâre all somewhere, doing what you should have been doing tooâsaving the world. Fighting some crime lords, evil villains, or crazy scientists.
âHello?â Your voice echoes around the hallway, and youâre sure now youâre all alone at the base.
Any other time youâd be delightedâecstatic, evenâto have the HQ all to yourself. But tonight, itâs not the case. Your stomach twists tighter as you pad slowly towards your room. On your way there, you pass Raeâs door, and you stop mid-step.
Her doorâs left ajar, and you hesitate for a second before pushing it open. You peek into her room, lived in, but feeling empty without her laughter bouncing off her walls full of posters. Your throat starts getting thicker, and you just donât have the energy to do that now, so you leave, before you break down.
When you reach the familiar ending of the corridor, you pause between the two doors. One leading to your room, the other to Rexâs. You know you should just jump into your bed and rest, because you might not get the opportunity to do it anytime soon. But his space calls you, pulls you by an invisible thread. So you decide on a compromise.
Maybe ten minutes later, your duffel bag still heavy on your shoulder, this time filled with all your necessities for daily life and heroing, you stand in front of his door, hand curled on the knob, unable to move. Youâre already imagining whatever bullshit Zendale is going to spit your way, when he finds out what youâre about to do.
Fuck Zendale.
Fuck anyone who would even remotely try to make fun of you for that.
The door clicks shut behind you, and your bag drops with a blunt thud to the floor.
The path to Rexâs bed is paved with your sweats, shoes and bra lost with every step youâve taken. Only tank top, panties and his hoodie left on your tired, aching body as you curl up on his mattress, shamelessly inhaling his scent like itâs the finest perfume.
The room is bathed in dark, moonlight shining through the blinds, highlighting a stash of magazines and CDs next to his wardrobe. A single tear rolls down your cheek, wetting the pillow under your head. Another follows soon, and then another, until itâs a downpour; quiet of the base interrupted by your choked sobs as you cry yourself to sleep.
maddie's scribbles: i'm planning to prep more chapters ahead, as i have 12 and 14 hours flights soon. so the updates shouldn't be so slow, hopefully!
also i hope y'all seen Shrek lol

a/n: so i was taking a break from writing smut all the fucking time and found my first (!) drabble ever. i polished it a little bit and well. here it is! heavily inspired by party 4 u by Charli XCX
Youâre sitting on your balcony, leaning against the rail with a slim vogue in your hand. The night sky stretches above you, music blasting from the apartment; his favourite music.
When you finish smoking, you flick the cigarette and head inside, still naively hopeful.
Thatâs when you hear itâthe intercom rings and you tense up immediately, heart skipping a beat. Someone picked up and let the new guest in.
Is it him? Did he finally come? You think while making your way through the crowded living room to get to the door in time. On your way there you see a clock, it says 1:41 AM. Better late than never. You stand in front of the door, kicking away the pink balloons blocking the way. Why the hell did I choose pink?Â
You canât make yourself look through the peephole, youâre way too antsy and drunk for that. You fought supervillains, got in serious fights, killed people even. But this? This is too much.
You can hear the elevator getting to your floor and when it opens, you unlock the door with a trembling hand. Your heart is hammering in your throat, all the drugs and alcohol not helping the cause. You put your palm on the door handle and open before he could even knock.
âHi, I was hoping youâd comeââ your words falter when you realize itâs not him.
âMark? What are you doing here? At this time? I didnât take you as a party animal. Howââ he cuts you off with a gentle hand gesture.
âHi,â he says quietly, barely over the music. âI came here⌠I couldnât sleep. I knew you were doing this thing, and⌠Whoah. Thatâs⌠a lot of people.â He mutters while looking sheepishly into the apartment, still standing in front of the door. âCan I come in? You donât seem too happy to see me.âÂ
âOf course! Sorry, Iâm a little tipsy.â You move away from the entrance, cursing in your mind over using that stupid high pitch you do around men.
You walk together past the bedrooms, all of which already taken by people having sex or blacked out guests you didnât even know.
âI know you donât know most of the people here⌠But I have to leave you for a moment. Be right back, okay? You can look for Zendale, he should be somewhere, I think.âÂ
Youâre not sure if he has already left or notâBulletproof was rather put together, always got his eight hours of sleep.
You walk away to the only empty bedroomâyour own. Fishing out the key from your bra, you open the door and quickly slide into the dark room. After your eyes get used to the lack of light, you can see the earlier chaos emerging. Clothes thrown around the place, drawers half-closed, make-up scattered on your desk. All that dolling up for nothing⌠Maybe.
You take out your phone and find Rexâs contact, thumb hovering over the green receiver icon. He has missed your last two calls, and you only let yourself call him three times; more will seem desperate. Even though you areâdesperate to see him.
Come on⌠Tone after tone, the waiting for him to pick up that always takes forever, your guts wrenching from stress. Or too much alcohol. Maybe both?Â
Whatup, biyatch! You didnât reach me! Probably donât wanna talk to you. Or I lost my phone. Er, donât leave a message, I wonât listen to it anyway. Or, whatever.
You listened to the whole recording, heart fluttering at the sweet rasp of his voice. You hang up and throw your phone across the room, furious and humiliated. Heâs not coming.
You collapse on your bed with your arms stretched out across. The photos on the wall by the city lights creeping through your window. You look at them â your family, your childhood friends with whom you are no longer in touch with. Your eyes pause on the photo of you two.
You stare at Rex, standing next to you in the picture. You remember the sparks from his fingers seeping through the material of your shirt. You smile, as you reminisce his face when he realized he burnt a hole in it. You were livid thenâit was brand new, you bought a few days before. But youâre not angry anymore; not because of that at least.
You get up on your elbows, looking around your room. Your throat is getting thick, tears forming in the corners of your eyes. Trembling in your chin proves you finally accepted the fact that he wonât show up.
You wipe away your tears, smudging more of your already ruined makeup. Your feet hit the floor with a soft thud when you jump off the bed. Smoothing down your tiny shirt (if you could even call it that), you lock the door before putting the key back into your bra. You head towards the music, hoping to get lost in the dance and forget about it all. And that the only reason for this party was Rex.
Mark is standing across the room leaning on the wall with one arm across his chest and with a coke in the other. His brown puppy eyes wander around the room lazily, jumping from one stranger to another. A smile tugs on your lipsâthe strongest man on Earth is wallflowering at your party.
âSoo, MarkâŚ. Youâre still single, right?â you remark, voice sultry. His eyes quickly set on yours, naughty spark in them. Maybe this party was for Rex, but this? This is for you.

Track 9
The playlist
You woke up early this morning, just shy of 7 AM. But itâs too early to face another grey day. Your last few weeks have been bleak, slowly moving from one day to the next one. The sense of novelty and adventure from joining the Guardians have worn off.
So you lay in your bed, trying to delay the start of your morning. You kill time with some book, which youâre not really reading. You donât even know what itâs about. Your mindâs racing again.
And, as usual, itâs about him. About avoiding him, and him avoiding you. The silence. The fight. What you told him in the shower to keep him away. You try not to think about it too often, but guilt is eating you up alive. He was always lively, loud, everywhere.
And now heâs isolating, too quiet. He misses team training and sparrings regularly. When you caught a glimpse of him a few days ago he looked like shit. Unkempt, dirty, tired. Nothing like ever before.
You think of the moment you thought you smelt his conditioner last week in the showers. But it wasnât his, it was Raeâs.
You shake your head quickly, trying to outpace your brain. You donât want to worry, because heâs a fucking liar who lured you into his bed while playing around with other women. So maybe he deserves it. You wonder if they even know they are also not the only ones heâs toying with.Â
But it doesnât matter anymore.
Even if you canât stop replaying every conversation you two ever had. Every touch, especially the incidental ones. Every gaze along the common room or in battle.Â
Or the night you went after him to his room. When he went down on you. Yeah, it was hot, sexy and amazing, heâs definitely very skilled. But it was way more than that. And every time you remind yourself that you naively thought it was more for him as well, you want to pound your head into the wall. How could you be this naive?
You look at the book again. Youâre still on the first page.
You groan as you bow your head down. You canât even read anymore in peace.
Why am I so consumed by him? I donât even want him anymore.
Three gentle knocks startle you out of your thoughts.
You look at your phone, itâs 8:46 AM.
Who the fuck knocks at your door before double digits hour? Outrageous.
But you already know who that is. Or at least you hope youâre right. And you hate the fact that you hope itâs him. You donât get up to open the door yet.
You can hear faint shuffling behind the door, maybe the sound of a wrapper.
âItâs me,â Rex says.
Your heart drops to the pits of your stomach.
âI know Iâm probablyâno, absolutelyâthe last person you wanna see. Let alone talk to.â
He sounds differentâvoice smaller, quieter, almost remorseful.
It makes you put your book away to your nightstand and swing your legs out of bed.
You pad across the room, stopping in front of the mirror. You move your hands over your pajamas, straightening them out. You rake your hands through your hair, trying to make them more presentable. You groan quietly, disbelieving yourself you still really care that much. Even now, heâs got you cornered in a vulnerable spot.
You come to the door anyway, but still donât open. Youâre not sure you want to. Or if you should open it, and then slam it in his face. But curiosity gets the better of you. At least thatâs what you tell yourself it is.
You take a big breath and turn the knob.
Rex is standing there, shoulders square. His hair is pulled back in a neat bun, and for the first time in weeks he looks clean and like his clothes have seen at least one wash in their lifetime. Heâs even shaved.
You move your eyes to his, noticing a flicker of surprise. His mouth parts slightly, like heâs about to say something, but no sound comes out. You let your gaze follow down and notice heâs holding two beers in his hand and your favourite chocolate popping from his hoodieâs pocket.
At eight-forty-seven in the morning.
You lift your brow before you can help it.
His mouth twitches like he might try to explain, then he just exhales hard through his nose and mutters, âYeah, I know. Donât start.â
You donât say anything, just study his face. You let the silence stretch, making him visibly uncomfortable. Your stomach flips as you wonder whether to slap him, kiss him, cuss him out, or all of it at once.
He clears his throat, and rubs the back of his neck.Â
âCan I⌠can I come in?â He glances at you, then away to the floor.
You lean on the doorframe and look at him, almost surprised. Has Rex ever asked for permission before? You swear you see the faintest brush of red on his cheeks. You want to smirk, but catch it before it happens. You linger a little more, taking in his presence slowly, acting like your heart is not trying to claw its way out of your chest.
He waits, surprisingly patiently for him. Doesnât even squirm that much. He holds your gaze this time and thatâs when you decide. You step away from the door. Itâs not permission exactly, but itâs enough.
Rex brushes past your arm as he steps in. The warmth of his body is still tangible even through the thick fabric of his hoodie. The way your heart does something from that sliver of contact makes you exhale sharply through your nose. You hope he doesnât notice that. You close the door behind him and loosely cross your arms.Â
He walks in, moving like he isnât sure where heâs allowed to stand. His eyes flick around â your bed, your dresser, your bare feet â before he ends up at the desk, setting the beer and chocolate down side by side like some cursed breakfast combo.
âCoffee was too on-the-nose. So⌠breakfast beer.â
He waves vaguely at the desk like that somehow makes it logical.
You donât answer. If you open your mouth now, youâre not sure what would come out of it.
Heâs still looking at you, his eyes stopping at your mouth for a fraction of a second before he catches himself. âRight. Yeah. That was⌠stupid.â
You lean your back on the wall and cross one leg over the other. You try to not give in to the adrenaline pulsing through your whole body, making your face say nothing. Youâre actually interested in what heâs gotta say. Or at least you want to watch him unravel.Â
He stands there, waiting for you to say something. When youâre still quiet, he starts pacing. Not fast, but restless. He puts his hands in and out of his pockets, like he doesnât know what to do with them.
âOkay, yeah, Iâm here, so I better⌠start talking, right?â He chuckles dry, quickly. âUh, right. Thanks for letting me in. Didnât think youâdâ nevermind.â He stops, his back facing you, and sighs loudly. âI donât want to waste your time, so I guess Iâll just start.â
He turns around to face you now, looks at your chest, but quickly darts his eyes away. And starts pacing again.
âWhere do I start? Thereâs⌠a lot to cover. Okay, so.â He exhales sharply. âWhew, thatâs actually harder thanâ I didnât prepare a speech. Cause I never had to. I always know what to say. And when I donât? I still talk anyway. Like⌠right now. God.â He drags his hands down his face.
You move away from the wall and start walking slowly in his direction. He freezes mid-step, as if he didnât expect youâd close the space between you two this soon. You donât go to him though, but sit on your desk chair next to him. You cross your arms and legs and tilt your chin up to look at him.
You had to sit down, otherwise your legs would betray you. Youâd either fall or lunge at him. And either of these would be way more humiliating than him rambling in your room before breakfast.
âOh, right. Yeah. Totally, sit tight. Itâs gonna be one hell of a ride.â He smirks, though it doesnât reach his eyes. Then he starts pacing again.Â
âThisâ usâ it wasnât supposed to be a thing. You werenât supposed to beââ he waves his hand vaguely at you. âLike that. Hot and unattainable is more my lane. Notâ not that youâre not hotââ he stops and takes a deep breath. Then continues. âSee, I flirt, I lose, I move on. Thatâs my thing, thatâs the loop. No damage done.â He looks at you again, waiting for anything from you. But you donât give him anything more than an occasional blink.
Let him squirm.
âBut you didnât... go. You stuck. Likeâgum. Orâduct tape. Orâhell, I donât knowâa shitty song you hate but secretly know all the lyrics to anyway.â
Your mouth almost twitches at duct tape. Almost.
âI was fineâno, not really, butâyâknow, stable. Predictable fuck-up, baseline functioning. And now Iâmââ he gestures at himself, like that says it all ââthis. The guy who shows up before 9 AM with beer and candy like some⌠some divorce dad. Not that Iâve ever been married. Obviously. Uhâfuck, never mind.â
You inhale slowly through your nose, trying not to laugh.
He freezes mid-step. âWas thatâ? No? Okay. Still nothing. Cool.â
He starts pacing faster, hands buried in his hoodie pocket now â fidgeting, rubbing his thumb over something in there.
He stops dead, runs a hand over his mouth like heâs trying to keep something in. His eyes flick to yours, away again.
âOkay, shitâ I didnâtâ I didnât fuck them, Banter,â he blurts out. He corrects himself quickly and says your real name, and it lands heavier than you want to admit. Your heart skips a beat.
âI know, you donât have to believe me, but⌠itâs the truth, I swear. Yeah, I ghosted you for two days and then you âunderstandablyâ dumped my assâ uh, fuck. We werenât really datingâ or, unless you think we wereââÂ
He freezes, searching your face for the answer that might save him, then flinches like heâs made a mistake just looking. âShit.â
âWhat Iâm trying to say is that I had to⌠close some doors, yeah? I didnât want any, uh, distractions,â he adds, talking faster with each word getting out of his mouth.
You feel your hand curl into a fist on your knee before you even realize youâre doing it. You know thatâs not the whole story. Not because heâs a bad liar, but because heâs a good one.
âGodâthat sounded horrible. You know what I mean, right? I justâIâm sorry, okay?â He raises his hands at that, then drops them to his face. âI should have told you. Or justâcall these⌠women, and tell them to forget my number.â
He stops and drags his eyes up from your legs to your face. You still donât make a sound, though thereâs a lot youâd like to say. Or do.
The silence between you is razor-sharp now.
âFuck, Iâm doing this wrong. I know Iâm doing this wrong. But IâI donât know how else toâfuck.â
He exhales sharply and unties his hair, just to instantly tie it back again. Then, he comes up to your desk and braces his hands on the edge of it, beer and chocolate in between. His knuckles go white. He continues without looking at you now.
âYou scare the shit outta me, yâknow? Because you see right through me. The bullshit. All the cheap moves Iâve been running my whole life. And you donât buy any of that shit.â
He darts his eyes to you, as if to check if heâs hit anything that matters. Your face remains unchanged, even if inside you feel like screaming.
He chuckles once, shortly.
âI donât sleep. I canât eat. Even jerking off feels tragic now.â
You snort before you can stop it. His head snaps up like heâs found a crack in the wall.
âHoped something would get to you,â he mutters, looking at you with a weak grin. Heâs swaying from front to back on his feet now.Â
When you still donât say anything, he pushes himself off the desk. His jaw tightens and he straightens his back. Heâs towering over you now, almost as if he wants to intimidate you. Which is not working by the way.
âSo what? Youâre not gonna⌠say a word? Not even a âhiâ or âgo fuck yourself, Rexâ?â Heâs louder now.
You shrug. You know itâs petty. But itâs also extremely satisfying.
He lets out a humorless laugh. âCool. Okay. Just fucking⌠stare at me then. Fun.â
He starts pacing again, faster this time.
âYou think I donât know I fucked up? You think I need this?â He moves his hand between you two.Â
âI hate myself enough already, thank you very much,â he says, lower now.Â
That makes your chest ache, even if just a little. But youâve been quiet long enough, so you donât want to give him what he wants just when he jabs at himself. So you raise an eyebrow instead.
He stops again, and you see his face clear now. His eyes are tired, blood-shot. You havenât noticed that before. He takes a step towards you, then another.
âI came here, didnât I? Which⌠I donât really do shit like that. Itâs not my thing,â he frowns. Then his eyes go to the floor. âI donât⌠spill my guts for fun. You think this is easy? Itâsââ
His hands make a restless gesture.
âItâs fucking humiliating.â
Thatâs not a word youâd ever thought heâd use to admit about himself.
You tilt your head and chew on the inside of your cheek. You still let him sweat.
âAnd maybe⌠maybe youâre enjoying watching me pace like a lost dog. Which, fair. Fine. But Iâm here. Iâm trying. Orâthis is my version of trying. And thatâsâthatâs gotta count for something, right?â He glances back at you. When he sees your face hasnât moved one bit, he takes a step back.
âOrâfuck, maybe it doesnât.â
And heâs back to pacing again. He doesn't talk now. He runs both hands over his face. Then after a moment he speaks again.
âMaybe you just⌠donât care. Anymore. Cause I thinkâŚâ he pauses. âI think you caredâfuck,â he groans. âUh, I shouldnât be assuming, thatâs what got me in trouble in the first place. ButâI hope you did.â
You clench your jaw so hard it almost starts giving you a headache.Â
âMaybe youâre just waiting for me to run out of breath so you can kick me out. Butââ he stops, chest rising quicker now. His eyes drag down to your fisted palms before he flies them up again. âThere wonât be a punchline. Just⌠me. And Iâmâfuck.â A frustrated sound catches in his throat. âI donât even know what I am right now.â
A beat passes, and you look at each other now. His chest is moving rapidly. And heâs still waiting for you.Â
He breaks the silence again.
âJustâfucking say something.â
Itâs not a shout, not quite. But itâs sharp enough to sting. You close your eyes for a second to gather yourself. With each passing minute itâs getting harder to stay still and silent.
With you still quiet, his mouth opens like heâs about to add something cruel, but whatever it was, he swallows it down.
Then he laughs once, bitter. âRight. Why would you?â
He leans back on the desk and crosses his arms, gazing down at his shoes. The silence hangs between you, heavy with everything still unsaid. He glances at you again and drops his eyes back down. He closes them and exhales slowly, like heâs mustering up courage to do or say something. He comes up to you close, and gets down to be at eye level with you.
Your breath gets stuck in your throat at the boldness of his sudden proximity. He raises his hand and lingers it over your knee before putting it on the armrest. His eyes meet yours again and you see something in them you have only seen once before.
âThat nightâŚâ he rasps, voice barely above whisper. You can barely hear him over your pulse ringing in your ears. He clears his throat and starts again. âYou know which one. Iâ it was something else, something⌠newâfuck, I canât.â He looks away and clenches his teeth. âI want to, I really do. I justâ I donât know how. To say it.âÂ
Youâre now unable to speak even if you wanted to, feeling the thickness building up in your throat, eyes almost on the verge of watering. He still canât admit to what it did to him, even now. And you donât know what hurts more â him caring but still choosing to mingle with other girls, or not being able to verbalize how much you mattered to him.
He stands up and walks one, two steps away, facing you.
âI fucking blew it, didnât I?â he mutters, hands going back into his pockets. âYou havenât muttered a word since I came here. Which, to be fair, is not what I expected. You used to put me in my place like thereâs no tomorrow. I thought youâd slap me, cuss me out, tell me to get lost. Yet you let me in, and not a peep from you.â
You canât help yourself but bite your lower lip. Your chest aches with everything you havenât said this morning. With every feeling, emotion, you ever had for him, culminating right now in between your ribs.
He says something unintelligible under his nose and then looks into your eyes and takes a big breath. Then he surprises the both of you.
âItâs just⌠I havenât wanted anyone the way I want you in⌠I donât even know how long. And itâs killing me, because itâs not justâsex. Itâs everything. Itâs the way you look at me like I could⌠be better than I am. And I donât⌠know what the fuck to do with that.â
Your lungs forget how to work. The air in the room suddenly feels too hot.
His eyes widen a fraction â panic flickering there like heâs already searching for a way to take it back.
âI meanââ he starts, one hand lifting uselessly before dropping again. âThatâs⌠notâokay, it is what I meant, butâfuck.â
You bite the inside of your cheek hard enough to taste iron.
He rubs his face like he can erase the moment, but doesnât say more.
Silence presses in, thick.
Your heart is hammering. Youâre still furious with him. You also want him so badly your bones ache. And you hate that both can be true at once.
He swallows, looking like he has to physically stop himself from reaching for you â fingers curling briefly into fists before disappearing back into his hoodie pocket.
And then his eyes dart to your nightstand.
When he takes out his hand from the pocket, he holds the small, familiar weight youâd forgotten he still had.
Your lighter.
He turns it over once in his hand, then steps to your nightstand and sets it down gently, like itâs fragile.
âI donât know why I kept it,â he says. âGuess I just⌠wanted a reason to come back.â
You swallow hard. That lands somewhere you wish it didnât. You stay strong and donât utter a word, though it proves harder with every second passing, him drilling his eyes into you expectantly.
After what feels like a lifetime of stillness, Rex rubs his eyes and sighs. His shoulders are slumped, he looks completely defeated.
âI wouldnât want me too.â His voice is so small now, nothing like you ever heard it before. âI said my piece, so Iâll leave you be. For real this time.â
His words cut you sharp in the chest.Â
He slowly walks towards the door and hesitates before opening them.
He turns the knob and takes one step outside, then stills and looks at you over his shoulder.
âBut⌠if you do want thisâŚmeââ
He closes his eyes and breathes out heavily, trying to ground himself.
His eyes find yours and he says quietly:
âStop me.â
Your breath catches sharp in your throat.
Youâre on your feet before you actually decide to move.
a/n: forgive me for another cliffhanger, i have no shame (or writing background). i love me some cheap moves, just like our rexy boy.
i might show up at your door with beer and chocolate in the morning if you don't like it though :c

âHey, asshole!â
By some miracle, the creep knows itâs him being called out, and so he turns. He does so slowly, shoulders up to his ears, even with a little shake to his skinny body. Rex is at his side in a few quick paces, curling his fingers in the creepâs drenched polyester shirt.
âWhat did you do to her?!â The redhead screams, way too loud even for the clubâs noises.
âNothing, manâshe mustâve drunk too muchââ
âDonât you fucking lie to me, you piece of shit! You slipped something into her drink!â
âWell, you shouldnât have left her all alone, I saw her doing multiple shots, one by oneââ
âLIAR!â Rex bitchslaps the man, and his head turns so violently to the side, itâs a miracle it doesnât fall off. âYouâre coming with me, you fucking creep.â
âAnd youâre what, police?â
Rex chuckles, but the soundâs dark and thick like tar.Â
âNah, man. Far worse. But you are gonna rot in prison and regret ever coming to this shithole.â
âI donât think so,â the guy spits in his face and shoves Rex away. He flees the second heâs free from Rexâs hold, but not for long.Â
Rex catches the asshole by his hair and brings him down to the floor with a blunt thud.Â
The woman that was talking to the man screams, people jump away like the barâs on fire. Seconds later, Rex is on his knees, the guy between his legs, groaning from pain.
The dark-skinned hero picks the loser up by the collar of his shirt, bringing him very close to his face.
âWrong move, motherfucker.â
With a speed of a blink of an eye, Rex stands up, dragging the guy with him and shoving him on the barstool.
He doesnât waste a moment this time, and his fist crashes with the creepâs jaw with a crunch that definitely sounds like fractured joints. Thatâd suffice, as the man almost loses consciousness, but still tries to fight back. He manages to land one blow at Rexâs mouth, cutting his lip open.Â
He spits out blood, and then turns his head back to the creep, looking him in the eyes with nothing less than animalistic rage. It awakened something wild, primal even in Rex and he knows he simply cannot stop there.
Another hook lands at the loserâs face, and this time his jaw is definitely broken. Then, Rex bends his knee and shoves it in the guyâs sternum, making his breath catch in his throat.
From the crowd, someone calling for security can be heard, but itâs all background noise to Rex, heâs in an anger trance now.
His nostrils are flared, chest moving up and down fast, his heart pumping blood full of adrenaline driving him towards the one and only path heâs ever really known in his lifeâdestruction.
Trying to grasp some air into his lungs proves difficult when Rex grabs the creepâs head and bangs it on the bartop with a bang so forceful, all the glasses jump, with some even falling to the floor and breaking into tiny pieces.
Someone shouts to call an ambulance, someone else says itâs the last time they came to this place.
Rex spots with a corner of his eye some nervous movement from the small crowd surrounding him and the loser. He also notices a metal shaker, and without thinking twice, grabs it and slowly charges it in his hand. A second before itâs too late, he stops himself, throwing the shaker to the floor before itâs actually ready to explode. So he sticks to the tried and testedâhis fists.
Rex is almost at his final blow, when he feels a large, strong hand on his shoulder.
âThatâs enough,â the large bouncer says, voice so low, it almost reaches the pits of hell. He drags Rex away from the creep who slips down like a puddle to the floor.Â
âYouâre coming with me.â
âIâm only doing what youâhey!â
The bouncer grabs Rex by both arms, bringing them to his back. But heâs not pulling him in the exitâs direction, no. Heâs taking him somewhere else, and Rex very much doesnât like that.
âLet me go! Do you know who I am?!â
Rex struggles to break free from the grip, but the security guyâs just too strong, too big.
âI donât care, boy. You can tell that to the police when they come.â
Rex tries kicking him, headbutting, but to no avail. The bouncer keeps him where he wants him.
And so Rex shoots him his worst look. âYouâll fucking regret that!â
âI doubt that.â The bouncer laughs and starts moving towards the front entrance, pushing Rex forward like he weighs nothing. âNow, shut the fuck up and stop writhing. Itâs over.â
âNo! Not fucking over!âÂ
Rex finally manages to break free and then, he makes one of the biggest mistakes this evening (minus leaving you alone by the table) â he tries to punch the bouncer.
And that doesnât end well for him, not one bit.
The bouncer knocks him out clean in one blow, making Rex fall to the floor like a puppet whose strings were cut loose.
â
Faint flickering of the light above brings Rex back to a somewhat conscious state. Heâs lying down on the worldâs thinnest mattress, extremely smelly at that. Sharp, pulsating pain on the left side of his head makes him groan, the spot raw to the touch. He sits up, and carefully, slowly, opens one eye to inspect where the fuck heâs at.
If not for his strong joints, his jaw would fall down to the ground.Â
Heâs in a fucking jail.
Behind the bars, on the side of freedom once had, a police officer walks by, his shoes clicking with every step, patrolling the corridor of cells filled with mostly homeless people taken in either by pity or for simply daring to exist.
Rex swings his legs from the bunk bed, only to realize he doesnât have any shoes on. His socks touch the wet, concrete floor. In a quick few paces, heâs standing at the bars, trying to ignore the seeping cold from underneath.
âHey,â Rex starts casually, âcâmere.â
The guard doesnât flinch, doesnât grace him with even a quick glance.
âOfficer,â he tries again, softer this time, âI have a question.â
The policeman stops and sighs deeply, closing his eyes at that. âWhat.â
âCan I make a call? I gotta get someone to bail me out.â
When no answer comes, Rex pushes even more, squeezing the bars for his dear life.
âI have a right to at least one call,â he states, trying to hide the shakiness in his voice.
The man in the corridor finally turns to him, squinting his eyes. âThereâs no need for that.â
The redhead tilts his head, knitting his brows tight, trying very hard to not break down right here and now. âWhat? Why?â
âWe got a call from D.C. and it turns out you got some friends in the higher-ups. Youâre gonna be out tomorrow, give or take. âHeroâ or not, thereâs still paperwork to do.â The guard does air quotations in a very obnoxious manner, setting Rex off.
âThatâs too late! I have to leave todayâmy girlfriendâs in the hospital!â
âAnd so is the guy you almost killed with your bare hands.â
Rex holds his breath momentarily, stilling himself for the inevitable scolding he senses is coming.
âManâs in a coma; ten bones broken, face so devastated heâll probably need a new one, along with a new set of teeth.â
âHe shouldnât have roofied my woman then,â Rex mutters, turning on his heel, shoulders stiff at the memory of you, weak and limp like a ragdoll, slipping through his hands like sand.
âMaybe you shouldâve kept her by your side then,â the guard scoffs and resumes his patrol walk, banging on the bars of another inmateâs cell.
âFuck off.â
Normally, Rex wouldâve lashed out more at the guy, but thereâs no use. He knows how this works all too well; he has put tens if not hundreds of people behind bars. So he flops down onto the bunk bed, regretting it immediately when his back makes a cracking sound, and not the one that gives you relief.
He drags his hands down his face, cursing himself for ever taking you to that damn club. Itâs all his fault, he fucked up, again. But hey, same old, same old. When did he ever not fuck up anything good he had in life?
The big, black clock on the wall above the exit shows a few minutes past 5 in the morning. You must already be in the GDAâs hospital, being taken care of and⌠all alone. Rex canât stand the thought of you waking up without him by your side. The confusion that will most likely shake your whole being, followed by anger, disappointment and worst of itâregret.
All his restraint, him being on his best behaviorâall for nothing. Completely lost because of some douchebag who chose you as his victim.Â
He shouldâve found a way to go with you, try flying the damn jet behind you two. Or maybe just sit his ass for once and wait for Mark to get him as well. Or ask to be teleported, somehow. If Cecil could teleport machinery, armies, heroes from different parts of the world, then whyâŚ
Oh, shit.
Rex bites on his cheek and turns to the side, curling up like a fetus, hugging his knees tight to his chest.
Cecil probablyâno, he absolutely knows already what happened. He also knows that his two best assets snuck out from the base without telling anyone besides Rae, jeopardizing any possible rescue mission that might have happened while you and him were grinding against each other on the dancefloor.Â
Great, so not only has he most likely lost his girl, but also his job. The only thing that was a constant among the chaos and madness that was his life. His whole persona, his fucking identity.Â
Rex lets his eyelids drop heavily over his tired, bloodshot eyes, hoping to fall asleep fast, and wait out this whole fucking nonsense.
â
âGet up, Sloan. Youâre out,â says the guard, his voice barely coming through between loud banging noises. Does every fucking cop has to be so cliche and hit the bars with their bat?
Rex takes his sweet time to walk out of the cell, already completely disheartened. His whole body is stiff, both from sleeping in that rock-hard bunk bed, but also in the expectation of being berated like an unruly kid. He wonders, who did Cecil send this time. Not Rudy, thatâs for sure. Though it would be one hell of a view, a kid version of himself bailing him out.
He hopes itâs not one of the so-called dads of the Guardians, Samson or Immortal. Though the latter is actually more of a great-grandfather of the team, and would probably feel too proud to even do such a thing anyway. But if he did, heâd bore Rex to death on the way to the base, his stoic, monotone voice lulling Rex to sleep like the best lullaby.
Maybe it's Donald, he runs errands like that for Cecil. Which would be the better option, as heâs usually rather quiet and has given up on lecturing Rex a long time ago. Donald would just take him to a diner, saying he knows how terribly they must have fed him in the jailhouse.
But the best person to take him from this shithole would be Rae. Sheâd definitely be pissed, screaming at him over a burger and fries, telling him bullshit threats, like their friendship is over, but eventually forgiving him sooner than later. And sheâd definitely knowâand tell without being askedâhow you are holding up.
If⌠youâre even holding up at all.
Cold sweats run down his back at the thought; he shakes his head violently, trying to rid himself of the mental image of your unresponsive body. He searches his mind for a more happy, alive, memory of you, but your pale face and empty stare keeps coming back like a boomerang.
The guard gives Rex his belongings back, his shoes along with his phone, which he tries to unlock, but the batteryâs dead.
Off to a great start.
The redhead glances around to check whoâs his ride back home, but doesnât see anyone besides the officers giving him disgruntled looks.
âWhoâs bailing me out?â
âHeâs waiting in front of the station.â The cop doesnât look up from his phone, legs parked on his desk, swinging his foot impatiently. Rex rolls his eyes and sighs; so itâs not Rae. Chances of a warm meal dropped spectacularly low.
The sun blinds Rex the moment he steps to the sidewalk, and he brings a hand to cast a shadow on his face to be able to spot the familiar face thatâs gonna bring him back to his own, comfy bed. The bed that holds a lot of memories, both good and bad, and almost all of them somehow intertwined with you.
He curses himself in his mind; how can he be thinking of his bed, when he should be focusing on the one that has your weakened, abused body.
His eyes finally get used to the bright, noon sunrays, but he still canât see anyone around the building that actually bailed him out.
âLook up.â
Rex does so and groans, his arms immediately dropping in disbelief when he notices the figure floating a few feet in the air.
âMâSeriosuly? They sent you, the mighty Invincible? Shouldnât you be, I dunno, saving the world?â
âI asked to come here myself.â
âOh yeah? And how exactly are you gonna take me to the HQ, huh? I think you forgot a blanket. Unless, itâs only for herââ
âIâm not gonna take you anywhere. You got out of there somehow, youâre gonna get back there the same way.â
âWhat?! Then whyâd you even come all this way?â
Mark flies down but doesnât set down on the ground, only floats above it, inches from Rexâs face. His jaw is wound tight, teeth gritting like he wants to look scary. But he doesnât, itâs impossible with such a puppy face, and Rex canât help but stifle a laugh.
âWhatâs so funny, Rex?â Markâs voice drops down an octave, the redhead ceasing to make any sounds at all. But doesnât stop the hero from intimidating Rex more, no. He moves in closer, making the dark-skinned boy take a step after step back, until his back hits the rough brick wall.
âWhy did you have to do this?â
âIâYou know why, cut the shit, Mark.â
âDonât call me that when Iâm in the suit.â
Rex scoffs, but Mark leans in even closer and continues, his jaw clenched like a tight knot.
âDo you really have to be told everything, like a child? To wait for my call when sheâs safe?â
Rex crosses his arms on his chest, raising a brow, all cocky demeanor, even though Markâs words cut him deep like daggers. âAnd you want me to believe you wouldnât have done the same? If your girlfriendââ
âI wouldnât have left her alone,â Mark utters, voice low and quiet, this time actually dangerous.
Rex gulps, but doesnât back downâhe cannot at this point.
âShe can take care of herself, you know? Sheâs powerful as fuck.â
Mark chuckles, but itâs dark, unforgiving. âAnd yet she ended up in a hospital.â
âFuck off, Invincible.â Rex pushes off the wall, and starts walking slowly in the direction of the building he parked the jet at. âThanks for nothing, dude.â
âYou wonât even ask howâs she doing?â Mark shouts behind him, tone more cruel than ever.
Rex doesnât turn to the floating hero when he retorts, âI already know sheâs fine; you would be singing a different song otherwise.â
Rapid whooshing can be heard, the fallen leaves and dust getting up with Markâs brisk take off. Rexâs shoulders drop an inch from relief; knowing youâre safe and made it.
And that Mark didnât beat his ass.
â
People walking past Rex circle him around like heâs got the plague, staring at him, pointing fingers and whispering to each other. Some even gasp and take out their phones to snap a photo of Rex Splode, the Guardian of the Globe, walking around Salt Lake City with a black eye and bloodied knuckles, smelling like old gym shorts and regret.
But Rex doesnât care, he canât. He only goes forward, in hopes of walking out this tight ache nestled comfortably in his chest.
He only realizes heâs been wandering for hours when the sun starts to set, and he is nowhere near the designated landing building. Heâs been lost in thoughts, replaying the events of the fatal evening.Â
How you smiled at him when you took his hand.Â
How your eyes flickered when he grazed his fingers along your waist; tingles like energy flowing between your bodies, tangled together on the dancefloor, swaying together in one smooth rhythm.
How everything felt right, like he actually made it; he really got you to trust him that itâs gonna work out. It had to.
But it didnât.
Rex finally reaches the beat up block of flats that stood out like a sore thumb among other, newer and smaller buildings in the neighbourhood. He stands in front of the entrance, staring at the door, hands curled into fists in his bloodied khakis pockets.
The cool air licks his body, the sound of leafless treesâ branches crackling from the gushes of autumn wind; a certain forecast of a long overdue rain.
Where exactly is he supposed to go now? To the base; to take a shower and eat something, and trying to ignore the unforgiving stares and comments from the team? Or straight to the GDA, which would take hours, to see you, to check on you? If youâre still there at all.
He doesnât feel like he deserves any of the options, and the urge to find a sketchy strip club or call one of his flings grows stronger with every passing beat. But somehow, he fights through the feelings of not being good enough for this world and finally moves forward, the decision where to head sitting heavy on his chest, leaving him almost out of breath.

When Rex gets out of the grimy club bathroom, he searches for you in the crowd, hoping youâre still there. The dancefloor and bar area is swarmed with people, itâs the peak moment of the night. Lights flicker around the walls, bouncing off of dancing bodies. He can feel the bass thumping beneath his feet almost as hard as his heart is racing behind his ribs.Â
There you are.Â
He notices you right when the pink light hits your face, the view filling his chest up with warmth. He doesnâtâhe canâtâtake his eyes off you even for a second, grinning widely with ease and that hopeful naivety of young romance.
Suddenly, you get weak in your knees, catching the bar top last second and itâs like everything around him slows down. The way your eyes go wide; how your lips part, desperately trying to catch a deep breath. Rex picks up pace, storming through the crowd like a tank â separating a kissing couple that doesn't move away, elbowing people left and right, and shamelessly shoving some guy standing by the pillar. But heâs still a few feet away from you â thereâs simply too many bodies to swim through.
His heart is hammering wild, but itâs different than before â feeling its beat in his throat like he does when heâs anxious, ringing in his ears almost deafening, mixing with an R&B tune coming from the speakers. He can feel his hands tremble, legs getting weaker, feeling something suffocating he hasnât felt in a long while.
If he was in his suit, normally thatâs when the adrenaline would kick in, giving him the ability to act quickly, precisely and based on muscle memory.
But heâs not. Not fighting aliens, chasing the Mauler Twins or kicking Machine Headâs goons. Instead, heâs glued to the floor, frozen like a statue at a nightclub where he has taken you in hopes of a good time. And now, of all life-threatening situations you two have been in together, itâs the only place he couldnât keep you safe.
Cold sweats creep up Rexâs neck when he sees some skinny guy in a terrible haircut ogling at you from behind. Then, this motherfucker has the audacity to touch your shoulder, leaning in way too close, all the while you can barely hold up your head.
âOut of my fucking way!â Rex yells, shoving people away. Fury spikes up, finally taking over the paralyzing feeling of panic.
He gets to you and the creep in just a couple more steps and grabs him by the neck, shoving him with brutal force at the barstool. Someone quickly moves away, someone else gasps behind him. Rex grabs the rat face guy by the collar and leans in dangerously close, breathing heavily, eyes wild like an animal.Â
âBack. The fuck. Off,â he practically growls, making the man . âSheâs with me.â
The man doesnât look Rex in the eyes, only chuckles nervously. âHey man, chill. I was just helping herââ
But Rex sees the smirk the dude tries to hide. He narrows his eyes, getting even closer to the creep's face.
âFuck. Off. Before I beat you to pulp,â he spits out slowly, then shoves him away. The skinny guy loses stability and falls to the floor, hitting the bartop with his head on the way down. Someone in the crowd can be heard yelling to get the bouncer, but Rex couldnât care less about that now.
He swoops you in his strong arms, holding you close tight. Anger starts losing to worry, his breath getting more shallow as he scans your face, hoping to find some life still on the surface of your consciousness. But he sees you can barely keep your eyes open, your gaze unfocused, unresponsive to the flashing lights flickering around.
âHey, hey. Iâm here,â he says urgently, taking your cheek in his hand. âLook at me.â
To his surprise, you do. He sighs in relief, though still filled with worry, his heart working overtime as you try to speak.
âI donâ feel⌠sâgoodâŚâ You slur your words with effort, head resting heavily on his palm.
âDid youââ He cuts off; he doesnât even know what to ask. âTalk to me!â He squeezes your arm and shakes you gently. The club lights dance on your skin, highlighting your dazed face, your body rocked by strong shivers. You blink, your eyelids heavy like stones, eyes blank like an untouched canvas, pupils dilated to maximum, taking over your irises.
âThis⌠dude⌠he talkedto meâ beforeâŚâ You manage, slurring your words heavily and trying your best to maintain eye contact with Rex.
He gapes, face frozen with an analysis running in the background. And when it clicks, he gasps and turns his head around, so fast he was blurry for a moment, searching for the fucker that did this to you. But you go limp in his arms, followed by a subtle sound blast next to his leg.
He inhales sharplyâand finally decides to move. Rex lifts you, grunting with effort, and your head drops, flailing against his chest. His arms are strong and secure around your weak body, the sound waves quietly pulsing around you; his legs fast steady as he swarms through the crowd, yelling at people to move.
âRexâŚâ you mumble.
He canât make himself look down at you anymore; he just canât stand the view of you being so fragile, your body violated by some low-life mouthbreather.
âStay with me. Iâm getting you out.â
Volume around you goes up and down in random spikes, your body rhythmically pulsing with sound blazes. One hits him in the chest, almost sobering him up completely.Â
He stops for a moment after running up two flights of stairs filled with drunk people, trying to catch his breath, which proves difficult in the humidity of a packed nightclub.Â
After getting to the main floor, with the exit finally in sight, the bouncer notices you two and steps in your way. Rex barely manages to slow down so as not to bump into the man, almost dropping you at that. He looks up angrily at the muscular guy towering over him.
âWhoah, whoah, whoa.â The bouncer holds his hands out. âStop right there. Whatâsââ
âSheâs been drugged. Now get the hell out of my way!â Rex shouts with fury, the one that demands respect. His eyes are open wide, lips parted, chest rapidly falling up and down and your head with it.
Normally, he would know better not to scream at someone who has at least two feet over him, but this situation is far from normal.
Not waiting for an answer, Rex swiftly goes around the big guy and kicks the exit door open so hard, it destroys the fringes. He doesnât look back when he runs outside, the darkness sucking you both in.
The postlamp barely lights the alley between the club and another building, casting long shadows behind Rex holding you bridal style. Or more like a wounded soldier for that matter.Â
Cool autumn air hits him sharp; itâs like a thousand needles darting his throat when he takes a deep breath, bracing himself to eventually check up on you.
Your eyes are closed, quick shallow breaths warm his chest as your body buzzes, meddling with the soundwaves.
Okay, so. Youâre still alive, he got you out safely from the club.
What now?Â
Hospital, right.
But what would they even do? How would they even treat you, pump your stomach? Besides, one strong, uncontrollable sound blast and you kill half the hospital staff.
Cold sweats creep up Rexâs neck, the evening breeze intensifying the adrenaline shakes that rock both his and your bodies. He knows how to fight, destroy, even kill. But healing? Thatâs not his strongest suit. He curses himself for being so fucking clueless. Youâd have known what to do, of course. But youâre the one in need of being cared for, treated.
Your face is soft, slack when he sets his eyes on you again. Itâs almost like youâre asleep, yet weirdly awake at the same time.
FUCKâwhat do I do nowâ
If only there was one place in the whole of the United States that could treat superabled humansâŚ
Of fucking courseâthe GDA. Why hasnât he thought of this sooner?
But how does he even get you there? With you this unstable right now? Itâs thousands of miles away.
I need someone who can fly.
Rex can think of three people who can fly, one of which is your leaderâwho has no idea youâre even out.
So itâs between Bulletproof and⌠Mark Grayson.
You take him out of his thoughts, murmuring something against his shirt.
âWhat?â He whispers, leaning closer to your face. No response from you, only your breath warming his cheek. Rex stiffens, already imagining the worst.
âOpen your eyes,â he says your name with worry. âStay with me. Itâs gonna be okay.â
He isnât sure if heâs calming you or himself. A bit of both at this point.
Rex slungs you over his right shoulder, your body still vibrating with your powers spilling uncontrollably from you.
âPlease donât vomit on me,â he mutters and takes out his phone with his free hand.
Rex scrolls through his contacts list and begrudgingly decides who to call. As if it wasnât obvious from the very beginning.
His thumb hovers over Markâs contact. They arenât exactly friends. He cheated onâlost Eve because of him. So yeah, Invincible owes him. He must come and save you.
Rex sighs deeply and clicks the dial, then immediately starts pacing. A few signals pass, stretching like a string.
âCome on⌠I really donât wanna call Bulletproofââ he mumbles, steadying himself when one of your sound blasts almost sweeps him off his feet.Â
Mark finally picks up after what felt like an eternity, his voice thick with sleep.
â...Rex? What⌠Do you know, what timeââ
âMark, I fucking need you.â His voice goes up an octave.
âItâs Banter, sheâŚâ Rex swallows thick, words struggling to come out. âHer powers are going crazy, weâre at this club, some fucker drugged herââ
âWhere?â Markâs voice is suddenly awake now, concerned. Focused.
âSalt Lake City,â Rex looks up at the neon sign above the entrance. âPlace called⌠Area 52?â He raises a brow, unamused.Â
You vibrate stronger against his body and he turns his head, flicking his eyes over your face.
âYou need to take her to the GDA, to the med bay, I⌠I canât help her. Itâs my fault. Hurry up.â
âHold tight. Iâll be there soon.â
And with that, Mark hangs up.
Rex puts his phone away and takes you back into his arms. If it wasnât for your pulsating body, you would look dead.
âCome on⌠donât fucking do this to meâŚâ He takes your face into his hand. âOpen your eyes. Please, Ban. Look at me.â
Your eyelids flutter slowly, your gaze looking almost like youâre daydreaming, trying hard to focus on him.
Rex feels a thick lump in his throat, eyes burning in the corners, his chest heavy like an elephant has stepped on it. He gets down to his knees and hugs you closer, holding you tight as your body shakes with more force than before.
Soft whispers of sweet promises spill out of his mouth, hoping to keep you awake, grazing his fingers over your cold cheek. After ten minutes or so of crouching in the back of what turned out to be a sketchy club, Rex finally hears a familiar thump to his left.Â
Markâs in his sweats, a blanket in hand, hair ruffled and messy. But his eyes are sharp, like he wasnât sleeping just minutes ago.
âHey,â he says softly, flicking his eyes from you to Rex. âItâs just the two of you here?â
âYeah, man. I wanted toâ it was supposed to beââ he canât bring himself up to explain, especially as itâs not the time, nor the place. âI promise Iâll explain later.â
Mark is staring at you two, trying to work out whatâs happening here. The last he mustâve heard you and Rex were on a rough patchâgossip travels at the speed of light in the hero world. Then something shifts in his gaze and he exchanges a knowing look with Rex.
Mark strokes your head, pushing stray strands of hair from your hazed face. He drapes the blanket over you, gently, as if you were his own child.
âPlease, just take her to the GDA.â Rex canât control the trembling in his voice anymore. The adrenaline rush has died down, leaving him with nothing but the empty feeling of helplessness. He looks up at the hero on the verge of tears.Â
âSheâs a hazard to herself.â
He stands up slowly and carefully passes your unconscious body to Mark. He takes you into his arms, looking at you with that gentle puppy gaze. If it wasnât for the dire scenario, Rex would feel jealous. And maybe he does, as some blunt sharpness stings his heart.
âDonât drop her,â Rex says quietly, brushing his hand on your arm. Youâre ice cold to the touch, skin prickly. He adjusts the blanket, covering you right under your chin.
âNot a chance.â Mark takes you closer, more so to comfort Rex than to have a better grip on you.
âShe doesnât control her powers, so⌠watch out.â
âI will,â he says confidently, hovering above ground. âIâll call you when I get there.âÂ
âI fucking owe you, man.â
âDonât even say that.â
Rex nods once, unable to speak anymore.
Instead, he focuses on Mark flying away with you in his arms. When heâs too far away to see in the night sky, Rexâs eyes drop to his shoes and he kicks a cigarette bud.
What the fuck do I do now?
He shouldâve come with you, somehow. Find a way to be there with you, for you. Make sure youâre okay. But for once in his life, he doesnât want to make it about himself.
Or crash the jet drunk flying.
He catches both sides of his head, almost ripping his hair out, shaking his head violently.
âFuck!â Rex screams out and kicks the trash cans.
I only left you alone for a few minutes.
He starts stomping on the metal bins, leaving big dents.
Iâm the one that took you here.
He starts hitting the wall, grunting heavily with each blow leaving blood smears on the bricks.
Iâm the one responsible for this mess.Â
He stops, fists still clenched hard, nails digging into his palms.Â
So Iâm the one to get it sorted.
His jaw tightens, teeth grinding hard.Â
Iâm a Guardian of the fucking Globe.
He canât make himself just leave this place without doing something.
I know what the fuck happens now.
Heâs not leaving until he finds the fucker who hurt her.
The piece of shit who ruined the one thing that was supposed to show you⌠he cares.
Rex steps back inside the club through the broken backdoor, face stone-cold.
The crowd is still thick, smoke mingling between the dancing bodies.
He scans the main floor like a predator.
And thereâby the same fucking spotâthe sucker is laughing with some other girl.
Like nothing happened.
Like he didnât harass you, violate you, touched you the way he wasnât allowed to.
Rex knows how to move fast and unnoticedâheâs a trained assassin after all.
He might not be wearing his suit tonight, but his body takes over, leading him on autopilot.
Time to put his abilities into use.

maddie's scribbles: this is the longest chapter so far. i usually try to steer away from this kind of length, because i just think it's easier to read (and write) more and shorter chapters. but i'm also getting much more comfortable with writing in general, and it just came easily to me, to my surprise. so i guess, more longer chapters incoming!
Track 22
The playlist
The trip to the hospital wing took less than a second, yet it dragged as if you were floundering in thick mud, everything around you a painful static. Youâd have thought you were dead if not for Cecilâs tight hold on your arm tethering you to the living world. When the linoleum floor materializes under your feet, you gasp, all air knocked out of your lungs.
The corridorâs frantic, nurses and doctors running from one room to another, shouting orders to each other. It feels like a war zone, blood painting the walls and scrubs on the medical staffâs tired bodies. You donât know where to look, everything seemingly important, trying to find clues to what the hell happened at that military base.
And when you see itâyou collapse to your knees, tears instantly spilling from your eyes uncontrollably. A broken sob tears out of your throat, your vision getting blurry but your sight stays glued to the bloodied red and yellow sleeve hanging from a tall basketâs edge.
You feel someoneâs hand on your shoulder, then under your armpit, pulling you up. Pushing the hand away, you take slow, wobbly steps in the direction of the bin, holding your breath.
Rexâs suit is awfully torn in the front and back, contrasting with a sharp line down the middle of the garment being cut off for surgery. With a trembling hand, you pick it up, only to find another, familiar shade underneath. You whine and squeeze your eyes shut, letting the tears fall down your face.
Raeâs suit is cut clean, but the green color is completely gone, the fabric drenched in blood pooling low on the basketâs bottom. Assessing the amount of it, a cold sweat rocks your body, and all you can do is shake your head, mumbling quietly under your nose.
âWhy the fuck is that here?!â Cecil screams, pulling you away from the bin. âTake that away. Now!â
A nurse quietly runs up to the basket, wheeling it away to a room at the end of the corridor. You stand there, stuck to the floor, following the trail of blood left behind the rushed steps of the nurse.
âBanter, hey. Banter, look at me.â Cecil steps in front of you, shaking you vigorously by your shoulders. With your shallow breaths, heart running a marathon, you can barely stand on your feet, let alone move your eyes away from the crimson marks left on the floor. But you find the power within and peer at the older man, his brows knitted permanently over his tired blue eyes.
âWhat happened?â Your voice is barely above a whisper, and you prepare yourself for the worst; this line of work is not known for living up to retirement.
âRex and Rae are being operated on as we speak. They are alive, you hear me?â
âAnd⌠Kate?â You gulp, your chin trembling so hard you have trouble properly articulating words.
For a brief moment, he closes his eyes, huffing through his nose.
âShe didnât make it.â
When the sad truth is revealed, Cecilâs observing you heavily, bracing for your incoming breakdown. But that doesnât happen. You suffer in silence, your gut twisting painfully, the pizza and the garlic knots youâve been snacking on the entire eveningâ
You shove Cecil away at the last second, retching and vomiting on your slippers. Falling down to all fours, you continue emptying your stomach until thereâs nothing else to come out, acid cutting sharp through your throat.
Before you know it, two young residents are picking you up, barking commands to one another. But itâs all a blur, the sounds muffled and silenced by deafening ringing in your ears.Â
As youâre dragged away to a nearby room, youâre too weak to fight the doctors off. Even though your vision is still blurry, you notice Cecil on the floor, massaging the back of his head. You realize you donât remember touching him, feeling his stiff, slender body under your fingers when you pushed him away. The familiar buzzing in your fingertips awakens slowly; the hole youâve been feeling in your body being filled up.
A nurse comes in and helps you into the hospital bed, taking you out from your thoughts; your whole body limp like a ragdoll. The harsh, fluorescent light is too bright for your liking. You can barely feel the sting of a needle poking your arm, fighting the urge to let go and fall into Morpheusâ embrace. You promise yourself youâre not gonna doze off; you have to see Rex, finding it hard to trust Cecil on this matter.
Thankfully, as if you willed him into being, the Director comes into the room, hands in his pockets, a stern look on his face. You sit up and rub your eyes hoping to see a little clearer; the IV drip helping with that.
âHell of a shove,â Cecil comments, his tone calm and measured. âWhen did you regain your powers, exactly?â
You straighten immediately, your whole body going rigid.
âWhatâHowââ
âDid you really think,â he leans in with a knowing smirk, âthat you could hide it from me?â
Your brows knit tightly above your eyes, staring at the man with a murderous gaze.
âAm I not allowed an ounce of privacy?â You mutter through clenched teeth, more angry than embarrassed at being caught redhanded.
âNot when it comes to something so crucial like your abilities.â
You scoff and lie down, crossing your arms over your chest. The longer youâre hooked to the IV, the better you feel, so after a moment of tense silence you swing your legs over the bed and grab the drip stand. You walk to the door, wheeling it along; Cecil quietly following you with his eyes burning into your back. When you reach the entrance, you rest a hand on the doorframe and stand there, waiting.
âShow me to Rex.â After a while you look over your shoulder at Cecil still by the bedside, his eyes fixed on the floor.
Then, he turns to you, his features a tad softer than before.
âHe was just wheeled into the OR, I donât think youâd want to see him in thisââ
âNow, Cecil.â Your voice is sharp like a dagger, cutting through the thick atmosphere between you and the old man.
His lips press into a thin line, but he doesnât budge an inch.
âIâm not going to repeat myself. You fucking owe me,â you add, when thereâs still no reply from him.
Cecil pinches the bridge of his nose, exhaling loudly with eyes closed.
âFine.â He leads you out and waves for a nurse to take you there, excusing himself on âsorting this fucking messâ.
Which is most likely both a lie and true. Whatever it is, you donât blame him â watching another person being operated on is not for the weak. Especially, if itâs someone who you have known for years. Even someone like Cecilâs gotta have an ounce of empathy in them. Right?
The walk to the operating theaterâor rather its modern equivalentâis quiet. And itâs not like you really need someone to walk you there; you know this place by heart from all the time youâve spent here. The nurse puts her hand on your shoulder just before you reach the preview window, slowing you down. You glance at her, then at her name tagâCynthia.
âItâs going to be a tough watch,â she says in that trained, soft voice. âOpen skull surgeriesââ
You take a step back, then another, your eyes widened to the maximum.
âWaitâRex is getting brain surgery?!â
Cynthia closes her eyes and sighs gently before gazing back at you.
âIâm sorry. I thought they'd told you already.â
âWhat happened?â You donât look at her, you canât. Instead, you chew on the inside of your cheek, so much so you draw blood, the heavy taste of iron filling your mouth.
âHeâs been shot to the head.âÂ
You know thatâs not everything, so you hold your breath, bracing for impact.
âAnd⌠he lost his left hand.â
Your voice comes small, raspy, when you ask, âHow?â
âItâs⌠Itâs been bitten off.â
The moment you hear it, you hide your face in your hand, shaking your head. Bitten off? What is this, Alien? You want to ask more questions, but then again, she probably doesnât know much more.
âThank you, Cynthia,â you donât look back at her, hiding your trembling chin. âYou can go, Iâll manage. Iâm sure you have plenty of work to do.â
âOf course.â
Only a few more steps separate you from seeing Rex, but you fear Cecil might have been right. Youâre not sure anymore youâd want to see him like thisâvulnerable, unconscious, on the brink of death. Taking two grounding deep breaths, you muster up the courage; simply because he would do that for you, so you cannot be worse than him.
When you reach the darkened window, your hand flies up to your mouth, the other one clutching the IV drip stand for your dear life.
Thereâs no sound coming from behind the glass, but you donât need it to understand whatâs happening. And truthfully, itâs better you canât hear it. Because youâd collapse again.
Thereâs at least half a dozen people in the OR moving hastily but confidently, like one, living, breathing organism. A man is holding Rexâs head between his gloved palms as another is shaving his hair.
Every strand that lands on the floor is accompanied by a tear rolling down your chin to the ground. You feel so stupid for mourning his fucking hair, when itâs not even a given heâll survive the surgery. But seeing as he loses one of his prized features, as heâs losing one of your favourite parts of his, breaks your heart. Shatters it, even. In hundreds tiny pieces, too small to ever put them back together.
With the faint beeping of heart monitors in rooms scattered along the impossibly long wall of doors, you zone out. The familiar rush on the corridor brings back a flood of memories of your own time in this exact hospital.
As you stare blankly at Rexâs shaved head covered in blood, the gunshot wound being ripped open more by the surgeonâs sharp scalpel, you think of the first time youâve seen someone die. And it wasnât a clean, sterile death.
Itâs been only a few weeks since your parents left you with the GDA; you were kept in a colorful room with clouds painted on the ceiling, all your belongings fitting in the tiny dresser placed in the corner. Everyday, multiple doctors, scientists, therapists and many others were visiting you, examining, measuring, scribbling down in their notepads.
Books were the only companions in the lonely hours between checkups and visits from the staff, so you indulged as much as you could. Luckily, it was seen as beneficial for your development, so getting them delivered was not a problem.
It was a late afternoon, you were laying in your bed, reading a book you still have, but never opened again after that day. There was a quiet knock on your door that took you out of the plot. Surprised, you looked at the clockâit was unusually late for someone to be coming in. You felt a tinge of fear; this place has always been so orderly and organized that it seemed suspicious. When the knocking happened again, you shoved down the feelings, trying to rationalize it; it must have been something important.
Maybe your parents changed their mind and came back for you.
With a heavy heart and a trembling hand, you opened the door slightly, peeking through the thin space at your unannounced guest. You didnât recognize the man standing in front of your room entrance, so you closed the door quickly. Or, well, you tried to. The man stopped the door with his heavy boot before slamming it open, sending you flying to the floor.
âWho are you?!â You shouted, crawling away backwards, terrified, yet angry.
He didnât reply, only stood there, staring at you, his eyes laced with cruel intentions.
When he took a first step in your direction, you froze. Glued to the floor, you watched the manâs every move, heart beating so loud in your ears you wouldnât hear a siren, even if it would be right next to you.
Just as then, youâre stuck now, unable to move, frozen in debilitating fear, anger long lost and forgotten.
Closing your eyes, you let out a dry, sad chuckle, trying to shove the image away. But it doesnât help; you remember perfectly what that man looked like, even though itâs been years since that fatal day. More tears prickle your eyes as you blink them away, not bothering wiping them off anymore.
The man was tall, head full of unruly dark hair with a full beard, a bit too overgrown. He was wearing brown cargo pants and black combat boots. A simple black tee was stretched across his wide chest moving up and down in slow, measured breaths, matching the rhythm of his steps.
And he had a black star tattooed on his right hand. You would never forget that detail, and what that hand had almost done.
The rest of the memory is a blur.
You remember him pulling you by both of your legs. You remember the clouds painted on the ceiling. You remember you couldnât move.
And you remember screaming. Like never before.
And thenâyou remember blood. So much blood.
It was everywhere; on your face, chest, legs, pooling on the floor, creating a steadily growing puddle. It was on the walls and the ceiling, painting the once pristine white clouds crimson red.
You let out a choked sob, trying to run away from the image. But the film reel keeps on playing, no matter how hard you try to shut it off.
The man was lying completely still on you, his weight pinning you down to the floor. Your hands were slipping on the wet floor, blood sloshing around, as you tried to crawl away from the headless body.
Before you got up, your room was swarmed with soldiers armed to the teeth, shouting orders, doctors and nurses rushing to you.
You donât hear him when he walks up, completely lost in unwanted thoughts; heâs learned to be discreet and efficient during his years under Cecil.
âIâm sure heâll make it.â
But thereâs no way in hell you wouldnât recognize this soft, quiet voice.
âHow can you be so certain?â You ask, wiping away the tears that keep on coming, trying to ground yourself by looking at the surgeons backs.
âRex survived a shot to the head. Heâs insanely strong and resilient.â He puts his warm hand on your shoulder, squeezing it gently in assurance.
âI hope youâre right, Donald.â
âWeâve got the best surgeons this country has to offer.â Thereâs a long but comfortable beat, giving you space. âOur paramedics found him cracking jokes with his brain slowly spilling out.â
Despite the grave situation, you snort, letting your lips curl up for the first time since you landed in the hospital wing. You rest your palm on his, letting him know youâre grateful for his company.
âOf course he did,â you chuckle shortly. When you tilt your head towards him, youâre greeted with your skewed view in his reflective glassesâred, puffy eyes; hair sticking out in different directions.
âAnd⌠What about Rae?â
Donald doesnât answer for a while, your chest growing heavier with every second that passes without his reply.
You look back at Rex, lying eerily still on the operating table. It doesnât suit him one bit, heâs such a force of nature; the only times youâve seen him like this was in his sleep.
And maybe he is sleeping, in some way. Hopefully, heâs dreaming too. Of something happy; of a place he hopes to visit; of a future, where his life is not threatened everyday, but where he can just peacefully exist, getting to do things he never had a chance to.
Like going to a cinema, for example.
You squeeze the rod holding up your IV drip tighter and you make a promise to yourself. Ifâno, whenâhe makes it out of here, youâre taking him to a goddamn cinema.
Donald clears his throat, lowering his voice, as if heâs afraid that when he says it out loud, itâll become real.
âSheâs⌠Her conditionâs critical.â
âCan I see her too?â You request, naively hopeful.
âIâm afraid itâs not possible now. Sheâs in the sterile wing, she suffered extreme injuries. Every bone in her body seems to be broken, her internal organs have been squished and ruptured⌠Theyâre essentially putting her back together, peace by peace.â
âWill she⌠Is she going to make it, Donald? And donâtâdonât lie. Please.â
âWe donât know. But looking at the extent of her injuries⌠She might not. Butâour doctors are doing their best, I assure you of that.â
âI know.â You dart down, focusing on your dirty slippers, still carrying remnants of your little puking episode.
âBanter, Iâd love to accompany you, butââ
âItâs okay, Donald. Go.â
He gives you a tight smile and then heâs gone, his footsteps silent like always.
You donât know how long you stand there, immobile, staring ahead, not really at Rex or the surgeons. Only when you hear your name, you realize youâve completely zoned out once again. Or dissociated, as your former therapist would say.
Glancing to your left, you notice Eve, as she rests her hand and forehead on the thick glass, letting tears stream down her face. Thereâs no need for wordsâyou only squeeze her shoulder, touch firm but gentle. It doesnât take long for Mark to come, embracing you two softly, giving you reassurance and space at the same time.
At least youâre not alone anymore.
Losing the grip on time again, you donât know after how long a nurse shows up, telling you three you can finally see Rae. With a quick glance, you notice your drip is empty, so you tear the IV out, letting it fall to the ground as you join the rest of the Guardians on the way to your friend.
âOh God,â you sob, your legs almost giving out when you see her. Mark catches you and doesnât let go; the memory of you weak and unconscious in his arms still too fresh in his mind.
Rae lies in what seems to be an adult sized pressure capsule, but sheâs swallowed whole by it; she is so small, so fragile. Yet her poor face is somehow bigger with how swollen it is; her features completely lost under the black and purple bruises.
Every limb in a cast, cervical collar around her neck, breathing mask connected to her tiny head, heart monitor blinking green with the line of life.
An arm curls around your back, and you peek at Eve, her eyes warm and welcoming.
âDonald told me youâve been here for hours. Have you eaten anything?â Her soft voice, care with which sheâs holding you makes you exhale deep, feeling some of the worry weighing you down letting go.
âIâno, I havenât.â
âCome on, then. I could use some company.â
You glance at her, then at Mark, biting down on your lips. You are hungry, and are very grateful for her offer, but⌠wouldnât it be weird? Sheâs Rexâs ex-girlfriend, and you are his⌠an ex-something, for sure. Still⌠Ah, what the hell. Thereâs nothing to lose, only to gain.Â
âAlright,â you nod. âLetâs go.â
With you leading the way, you walk in silence, not comfortable, but also not awkward. So far it couldâve been worse. You hope so, at least.
âI always knew this day might come and yet⌠Iâm still shocked.â Eve doesnât look at you, visibly fighting the tears from spilling.
âYeah,â you reply, nodding. âMe too.â
She doesnât fill the silence, and honestly, youâre glad. Itâs not half bad; you know it takes someone special to just shut the fuck up and comfortably exist in the silence. When you get off the elevator and round the last corner, she starts glancing at you more often.
âSo,â Eve starts, and you already know what sheâs gonna say. âYou and Rex, huh?â
You take a lungful of air and dart your eyes from her face to your hands, fidgeting with the hem of your shirt. âNot anymore.â
âSorry,â she hisses, scrunching her nose. âThat was stupid of me. Heâs fighting for his lifeââ
âNo, Eve,â you stop and turn to her, taking her hand. âItâs okay. You have the right to ask, you know him the longest after all. And the best at that.â
âSometimes I think I donât know him anymore. Or⌠If Iâve ever really known him, you know?â
You frown. âHow so?â
âI donât know, itâs just that the last year or so, heâs been different. It started soon after we met Markââ
You chortle, rolling your eyes. âIsnât that answer enough?â
âWhat? No! Me and Markâweâre notâweâre just⌠friends. A-and Markâs with Amber!â
You only raise a brow, crossing arms over your chest.
âI mean it. And lately weâve been more distant anyway.â
âDid something happen?â
âNo. Nothing at all.â Her tone comes clipped, like you touched a nerve.Â
âMaybe⌠thatâs the reason?â
Eve sighs, looking away. âI donât wanna talk about Mark right now.â
âThatâs fine. But⌠if you ever want to, or need to⌠Iâm quite good at listening.â You end with a wink and resume walking, the atmosphere between you two somehow clearer.
In the cafeteria you order your favourite and a cup of tea, and Eve sits across you empty handed, before she creates a tortilla roll out of thin air. That will never cease to shock you.
âYou did that just like him, you know?â Eve says suddenly after you both have finished your meals.
You furrow your brows, slightly confused. âWhat?â
âThat wink, in the hallway? Such a Rex move.â
âYeah,â you smile sadly, âI mightâve picked that up from him.â
She leans in, resting her forearms on the table. âDo you maybe⌠want to talk about it?â
âAbout what?â You donât look up at her.
âWhat happened between you two.â Eve reaches for your hand, and you let her, still hungry, but for some meaningful touch.
âAh. That.â You clear your throat and scan her face, searching for⌠you donât know what for, exactly. Understanding? Honesty? Kindness?Â
âWhat we had was mostly based on lust. Thoughâwe didnât do it. There were close calls, but it didnât feel like the right time. And he disappeared on me for a couple of days. He said he had to end something. We had a fight. I said some ugly words. It was after the fight with Omnipotus.â
âOhh, I remember. I talked briefly with himââ
âI know, I heard. Superhearing and all that jazz.â
âRight,â she blushes, âremind me to never talk shit about you behind your back.â
You chuckle, and relax your shoulders, realizing how tense you were this whole time.
âThen he asked me to give him a chance. And⌠I did. I know, stupid of me, but⌠Well. Letâs just say he can be very persuasive.â
âBelieve meâI know.â
âAnd it was nice, for a while. We went out to a speakeasy, then we drank a little too much and ended up in a club. Which didnât really go well for me.â
âMark mentioned something.â
âDid he also mention that he bailed Rex out? For beating up the guy who drugged me?â
Eve doesnât respond for a while, weighing down whether she should tell you the truth.
âYeah,â she finally decides, âhe did.â
âSo yesterday⌠Before you all went into space, Rae got me out of this goddamn hospital.â You laugh, but the sound is bitter on your tongue. âRex was waiting for me in my room, and⌠we cried, we talked. And I ended things. He broke my trust. I had to stay put when Cecil called in, because Iâm still benched from any heroing even though you guys were on your way to Mars. And the rest is history.â
âListen,â Eve darts her bright green eyes away, âI donât want to make excuses for him, because I know Rex can do crazy shit. But, what he did, at that clubââ she looks you straight in the eyes, ââit was his fucked up way of showing how much he cares for you.â
You scoff, enraged, and take your hand away the moment the words land. Out of all people, you didnât expect Eve to be a Rex-apologist.
âI donât care,â you get up, tired with people telling you to understand Rex, to understand Cecil, your parents⌠When will someone understand you?
âI needed him. And he wasnât there for me.â
Grabbing your plate, you storm off, before turning back to Eve with an angry grimace twisting your face.
âAlsoâhe almost killed the guy! I donât want anyone dying so Rex can show me that he actually is serious about something. About me.â
Youâre fighting with your trembling chin, too tired to cry again. Youâre not even sure you still can, youâre out of tears for the next two years. Eveâs just staring at you, biting the inside of her cheek.
âDo you know why Rex is so difficult?â She says after a moment, so quietly, it makes you sit back down.
âBecause heâs an asshole?â
âBut do you want to know why he is one?â
You look up, trying to calm yourself down. Youâre doubtful sheâll tell you anything new, but she also hasnât given you a reason not to trust her. Yet.
âEnlighten me.â
âDid Rex ever⌠tell you about his parents?â
That gets your attention.
âI thought he didnât have any.â
âHe does. They sold him. Like an object.â
âWhat?!â You choke on your spit, cough shaking your body violently. âCecilâs fucked up, but not that much to buy children like some breedable livestock.â
âIt wasnât Cecil. It was his former boss, Radcliffe.â
Youâve heard this name before. You only know that he was Cecilâs boss. Intrigued, you lean in, interlacing your fingers and resting your chin on them.
âGo on,â you encourage, impatient with the dramatic pause. âIâm dying to hear the rest.â
âRex grew up very poor. Like, no electricity, starving kind of poor.â
You immediately imagine young Rex, malnourished and dirty. That hurts more than youâd like to admit, the picture of this young, unkempt boy crystal clear in front of your eyes. You can thank Rudy for that.
âOne day,â Eve continues, âa man claiming to be âthe governmentâ offered his parents a fat suitcase with money and a dinner steak for two if they give up his only son.â
âWait,â you perk up, things not adding up. âOnly son? But Rex told me he has siblings.â
âWeâll get to that later,â she mutters.
You want to protest, but decide against it, letting her finish at her own pace.
âHis parents agreed,â Eve continues, âand so Rex was brought into a lab where they installed the receptors that let him charge objects. They train him in several martial arts, acrobatics, stealth⌠you name it.â
Now that you think of it, it is quite impressive how extremely well trained he is. You always wondered what his background was, given the confidentiality of his files. Rex might be lacking in some parts, but he works like he was built for this job. Literally.
âAnd then his missions began,â Eve goes on, gesturing along the way. âHe was sent all over the world⌠taking off targets. Thinking heâs working for the good guys.â
You let that sink in. Young, impressionable boy who only craved to be wanted, loved⌠used as a weapon. How tragically familiar it sounds.
âAnd along the way, we stumbled upon each other. We met when Rex took out Killcannon clean, asââ
âDid he now? This dude just keeps on reappearingââ
Eve squints her eyes, measuring you coldly with them
ââright. Sorry. Uhh, continue, please.â
âSo that night he told me about his next hit. Take a guess, who was the next target.â
Your jaw falls to the floor. âNo way.â
âWay. Rex was told to storm the Pentagon and assassinate Cecil Stedman.â
âSo thatâs when Rex finally realized heâs just a puppet? God, he really is thick.â
Eve doesnât say anything for a moment, and you think maybe it was too much, too soon. But the weight is lifted off your shoulders when she starts giggling.
âHe sure is. But he has his good qualities, too.â
âYeah,â your lips corners curl up, âhe has.â
After a while of reminiscing, you clear your throat, âSo I assume since Stedmanâs still with us, you talked Rex out of it?â
Eve nods. âAnd we took down the bad guys after that. And later we just⌠started being together.â
You wipe non-existent sweat off your forehead, letting out a loud âphewâ.
âVillain origin type shit. Itâs a miracle he actually works side by side with us, and not against us.â
It all starts to look coherent, as you try to match the puzzle pieces together that make up Rex Splode, or ratherâRex Sloan. But thereâs still one missing piece.
âWhat about his siblings?â You ask, biting down your bottom lip.
âRex was really pressed to find his parents. He later told me that he saw them all happy, in a big house full of luxuries. He was ready to kill them with a charged stoneâŚ.â
A cold shiver runs down your spine; itâs impossible how alike your lives have been. And how much it explains a lot, if not all of his actions.
And how much your story says about you.
â...but when he saw two little kids, a girl and a boy, run to them⌠He couldnât.â
Itâs very rare you donât know what to say. And this rare moment is now. You let everything sink in, making a mental list of questions youâre gonna ask Rex when he awakes. Before you can get lost again, youâre brought back when Eve gets up, resting her hand on the table.
âListen, I⌠I want to go and ask to see Kate. You donât have to come with me, I know you two havenât exactly been friends.â
You get up too, grabbing your tray. âBut we were still teammates, Eve. I didnât like her, but I didnât wish her death. I didnât even know it was possible to kill her.â
âThatâs why I gotta see it with my own eyes. Her body. Or, bodies.â
You gulp. How could you not think of it? Of course there would be more than one Kate in the morgue. Nonetheless, you owe her this much.
On the way you bump into Mark; he has no idea what to do with himself, wandering around like a lost puppy without Eve.
âIf youâre going to see Kate⌠I suggest you wait. Immortalâs there now.â
The last thing you want to see next to countless dead bodies of Dupli-Kate is a crying Immortal. Even assholes like him deserve the privilege of an intimate farewell with a loved one.
âWeâll have plenty of time,â you assure Eve when her shoulders droop. âBrain surgeries last hours, weâre not gonna be out of here anytime soon.â
âAbout that,â Mark raises a finger bashfully, glancing down at your slippers. âI could fly to the Guardianâs base and bring you some clothes. Or anything else you need.â
âHow did you know I needed to change?â You smirk, too satisfied with how he blushes under your gaze.
âJust a guess,â he mutters, rubbing his arm.
Itâs incredible how boyish and gentle Mark is, given all his strength and abilities. He could crush you and this whole building down to the ground without breaking a sweat, yet he gets red like a tomato when a subject gets somewhat uncomfortable. But you donât torture the poor boy, this must have taken its toll on him, too. You text him a list of your most needed items, along with Rexâs stuff he might want or need for after he wakes up.
And itâs good that you did, because after a couple more hours a nurse comes out of the OR to inform everyone the surgery is going well so far, but itâs still gonna last a few more hours. You groan quietly, slumping in the uncomfortable plastic chair. When your back pops a joint, an idea comes to your head. If youâre gonna stay here for days on end, might as well book yourself a room.
Since Eve was the only person keeping you company now, you tell youâre going to crash in an empty room and suggest she does the same. Most of the team got back to the base, with Amanda staying behind. But sheâs fast asleep now. Mark has also left, saying he might be saving the world from alien attacks, but heâs still on diaper duty. Turns out, even the humblest of men needed a strong woman bossing them around.
The moment you jump on the bed you regret it instantly; the hospital mattress having almost zero give. Your poor back is gonna fall off soon if you keep on abusing it like that.
With the bleak bedsideâs lamp light you check the two duffel bags Mark brought you back from the HQ. Two of your favourite books, your journal, some comfy lounge clothes and sneakers. You grab a set of sweats and your toiletries and head into the shower, not ready yet to check Rexâs bag.
As you strip, you realize you look like a ghost, having lost weight with all the trauma your body and mind has suffered in the last few days. Rebuilding all lost strength and muscle mass will take weeks, if not months.Â
You step into the shower, steam already curling around the tiny bathroom. The first hit of the hot water makes you gasp, like youâre taking your first breath. You take your sweet time, washing off all the worry and lost sleep, or at least you try to, as memories rush back again.
A doctor flashed a light in your eyes, asking questions you donât understand. They were catching your chin, trying to turn it towards them, but you resisted, your eyes stuck on the man, or whatâs left of him.
You weren't fighting back when they wheeled you quickly out of the room, fearing you might be catatonic. When they started to undress you, tossing away your favourite pajamas covered in blood, muscle tissue, teeth and brain parts, you let them. They push you under a shower and start washing your rigid, frozen body.
The tiles feel cool to the touch, contrasting with the scorching hot water pouring down your back. Youâre breathing heavily, too tired to fight against the flood of emotions surging back. And then, somehow, you find it in you to cry once again. But not for Rae or Rex this time.
For yourself.
The stream is hopefully loud enough to cover your sobs. Or, who the fuck cares. Everyone will assume youâre bawling your eyes out for your friends.
When your eyes are raw and itchy, skin pruned like an old grape, you slowly start to actually clean yourself. You donât rush working in the shampoo, you're mindful of every stroke of your hand as it glides along your body, soap lathering against it. Itâs quite possible you might use up all the hot water in the entire wing, but you really need it.
After you get out, towel swirled on your head, moisturized and fresh, you sit on the bed. You try reading, but you go back to the same line over and over again before you give up. With a sigh, you look at the bag with Rexâs belongings and decide itâs time to check whether Mark brought everything you and Eve mentioned he might need.
The duffelâs not that heavy, and itâs no surpriseâRex doesnât own much. Carefully, you take each piece out, grazing your thumb over every shirt and magazine. When you pull out his hoodie, something falls to the floor with a metal clank. You smile as you pick it up, twirling it between your fingers.
Your favourite lighter.
Putting it away on the bedstand, you curl up on the thin mattress and close your eyes, hoping to finally catch up on sleep. But even though youâre completely wiped out, you toss and turn in the bed, your mind going 100 miles per hour.
Just as youâre finally drifting away, the big light turns on. You groan and open one eye to see Eve by the doors, her tired face laced with relief.
âSurgeryâs over,â she exclaims with a grin. âRex has made it and heâs stable. Soon, theyâll let us see him.â
You sit up on the bed, yawning so hard your jaw pops, âWonât he be still unconscious?â
âYes, but⌠I just thought youâd want to spend some time with him. I know I do.â
âMe too. Thank you, Eve. I mean it.â
She gives you a tight smile and leaves. You get up, grabbing one of Rexâs magazines and join Eve in the hallway. It doesnât take long for a nurse to come and inform you which room heâs in. She asks if itâs okay that she goes first, alone, and you canât say no to that. So you wait by his door, clutching the magazine tight to your chest, when a shadow casts on your face.
âYouâre still here,â Cecil mutters with some disappointment in his tone.
âOf course I am,â you spit back, knitting your brows. Youâre gonna get a permanent crease between them soon if you keep that up. âWhat else am I supposed to do?â
âBe on call, like everyone else.â
âI don't remember being cleared to hero again,â you tilt your head, drilling through his skull with your eyes. âYou benched me, remember? And itâs not like Iâd be of good use, anyway. Iâm distracted, dead tired and my friends are fighting for their lives. Iâm staying.â
Cecil groans low, barely audible. âTwo days. And then youâre back.â
He turns to leave, but then slows down and looks at you again, stern look on his face.
âSo get some rest while you can.â
When heâs a few feet away, you flip him off, tired with his bullshit. Soon after Eve leaves Rexâs room, wiping tears away with the heel of her palm.
âThanks for letting meââ
âStop, Eve. Itâs your goddamn right.â
She laughs wetly and states she needs to finally get back home. You smile weakly, understanding her to some extent. Youâd do that too, if you had a home. A real one.
Letting out a slow exhale, you stand frozen in front of the entrance to Rexâs room. You want to see him so bad, yet youâre terrified. Not of what heâll look like, no. But of what itâd do to you. Hugging the magazine to your chest, you finally step inside the dimly lit room. Soft whirring of the machines fill the space, faint beeping of a heart monitor grounding you with each step you take. And then you look at him, your chest struck with a sharp pain right down the middle.
Rex has a metal halo brace on his head, with half of it exposed. Before you can stop yourself, you reach out to touch the bald skin, thick stubble under your fingertips. One tear is followed by another as you notice his left arm in a robotic, metal cast, eerily missing a hand. You start to wonder what hand was his dominant; he always fought using both, and youâve never seen him writing. Either way, you hope it wasnât his left.
âHey, Rex.â Your voice comes small, as you sit on the chair by the bed left by Eve. âItâs me, Ban. I got one of your magazines here.â
âBut before I get to reading, I wanted to tell you something. Something⌠important.â
You take his hand gently into yours, grazing over his knuckles with utmost care like he was made of glass. As always, his skin is hot to the touch, even a brain injury wonât stop him from being a human heater.
âI could wait for you to wake up, butâŚâ The words get stuck, and youâre scared that if you say them out loud, theyâll become true.
âWhat if you donât?â You manage weakly, swallowing down the thick lump in your throat.
âYouâre so fucking important to me, Rex.â
You choke on a sob, but power through, because you might not get another chance.
âYou see me for who I am and you donât run away. It terrifies me to death so I push you away, flee like prey. And yet, at the same time, I fly back to you like a moth to a lightbulb, unable to resist your light.â
When the meaning of your own words catch up to you, you let go and let the tears fall freely, surprised your not out of them yet.
âGod,â you chuckle dryly, wiping your cheeks, âI know, Iâm such a fucking sap.â
His heart rate speeds up just a bit and you huff a laugh, sniffling like a sickly child before opening the magazine in your lap.
âWhat do we have hereâŚâ You mutter, flipping through the pages in search for the best article to read out loud. Preferably, with more photos than text. When you see a bright space where everything, and I mean absolutely everything, is drenched in one color, you stop and smirk.
âBingo. 36 mudroom ideas⌠Thatâs a bit too much, if you ask me, but whatever.â
You glance at Rex, expecting an answer, only to be reminded that the only thing youâll hear from him are his steady, quiet breaths.
âOkay, so.â You clear your throat and begin the session. âThe first photo is made from the entrance POV, with yellow lockers on the left, also yellow open shelves with scalloped edges in with a collection of decorative glasses and flasks on them and a small ladder in the middle. Which, you guessed itâalso yellow.â
âHonestly,â you sigh as if you were an interior designer, âitâs fucknig obnoxious. Definitely a bold choice, which I applaud, but maybe Iâd have chosen a different color, yâknow? But youâd probably like it.â
His face is relaxed when, no sign of pain or discomfort as you gaze upon him, still feeling weird that thereâs no auburn hair framing his sharp features.
âMoving onâŚâ You skip a few pages until your eyes land on a picture that catches your attention. âOhh, I like this one! Itâs also bathed in one color, but this time itâs blue in varying shades. The title is âMix Various Patterns and Shadesâ. Thatâs a good tip, it makes the space less overbearing while still standing out. Thereâs dark blue textured polka dots wallpaper, navy shiplap, and pops of baby blue with cupboards at the ceiling.â
Before you know it, youâre almost at the end of the magazine, yawning every couple of words. Your throat itches with all the effort youâve put into describing every photo in detail, hoping that despite his state, he can hear you. When you look up, you notice a familiar face by the door.
âHow long have you been here?â You squint your eyes, but not in anger or suspicion. Cynthia is leaning on the wall, looking at you with warmth. She must still be new here with how sweet she is. But if sheâs notâwell, then it gives you hope.
âJust a couple of minutes,â she smirks and walks up to the machines hooked to Rex, checking his vitals and whatnot.
Thereâs a question thatâs been rumbling around your head since the surgery ended, but were too afraid to ask. Still, youâre dying to know.
âDo you know when heâll wake?â You look into her big, hazel eyes, searching for even a glimpse of positivity.
âBest case scenarioâtomorrow morning.â
You gulp, readying yourself for another question.
âAnd worst case scenario?â
Cynthia stops reading through a diagram of Rexâs heartbeat over the last few hours and sighs deeply. âDo you really want me to answer that?â
âNo, actually. I donât.â
She rounds the bed and curls her fingers around your shoulder gently. âGet some rest, honey. Youâve been up for so long.â
Before you can protest, she continues with a smile you have no other way than to trust.
âI promise Iâll wake you up as soon as he opens his eyes, alright?â
âYeah, sure.â You close the magazine and leave it on Rexâs bedside table. âThank you, Cynthia.â
She nods and resumes her duties. You linger a little longer, looking at Rex stretched on the bed, his chest moving up and down rhythmically.
The door to your temporary room closes quietly behind you. You rest your head on the smooth surface, not sure if you want to cry some more or laugh. Life has burned you a lot of times, given you plenty of reasons to be cynical. Still, you canât let go of the feeling itâs gonna be alright. Maybe itâs wishful thinking, but what else do you have left?
Sitting on the bed, you grab your lighter and smile at all the memories that tiny object is holding. You put it away on the bedside table and get ready to lie down, when you decide you need one more thing to fall asleep. Searching through Rexâs duffel bag, you find the hoodie heâs worn just two days ago and put it on. His scent on it is strong, intoxicating. Itâs so soft and warm, so close to your body, it almost feels like heâs giving you a hug.
And then, as soon as your head hits the thin hospital pillow, youâre out.
