Jehan fixed the dress he wore uncertainly as he heard the front door open. It was his family duty, he knew, as the only child left after his sister had departed them after already being promised to a man. It had not been her fault, he knew, yet now he could not help but be upset with her. How could he take her place as the bride-to-be of a man who would help make their family much, much better off than they were right now.
His eyes snapped up as his mother hurried once more into the sitting room. "He's here, only him and no relatives thank goodness, but he has arrived." She said swiftly, coming to stand with her hands on his shoulders. "Just remember to keep your voice light, stay polite, do all the things you watched your sister learn for this meeting." A small smile came to her face, to reassure her son. "He's very handsome, and seems very polite. And oh, you make such a handsome lady---in this dress Jacqueline."
The change in name put Jehan on edge, for it meant that the man was in the doorway. He rose, about to extend his hand to the man, but his mother's firm hand on his shoulder reminded him that such a thing was not what a young woman was supposed to do, and he must play his role.
Instead, he inclined his head, his eyes demurely lowered, "I am happy to make your acquaintance, Monsieur de Courfeyrac."
