Since language learning is Tumblr's topic du jour, I have a question for the good old hive mind. All input/feedback is welcome; I value your opinions very much.
When I was an innocent young...er...high school student, I considered learning Swahili. I can't tell you exactly why I zeroed in on that language in particular, other than the fact that it's very different from English (but still not as different as, say, tonal languages). I actually did learn a bit, but (like so much else in my life) I gave it up when I went to college.
Now--proving that everything old is indeed new again--I'm actually giving a bit of thought to trying the language afresh. Obviously, as someone living in the United States, it's unlikely that I would use Swahili in my daily life. But it is a language spoken by tens of millions of people in East Africa -- possibly hundreds of millions, depending on the estimate -- and there's a non-zero chance that I may go to that part of the world at some point in my life. Besides, given most Westerners' ignorance about Africa and its many countries and peoples, I think learning the language might be a worthwhile cultural bridge (so to speak).
Anyway, I do apologize for rambling on. As I said, I value your opinions. And I hope you all have/are having a good day.

Ok y'all it's been a year since I started T (a little over) and while I know things are changing, I wonder if those changes are noticeable to people outside myself who is looking for those changes.
On the left are pictures I took today. On the right are pictures I took before my first T shot. If you are open to it, please let me know what changes you can see between the two 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Okay, it’s not really a poll since there’s no poll function here like on Twitter BUT, Sanvers Week is coming up, and Valentine’s Day is the soulmate AU day! I wrote a soulmate AU that ended up being three parts for last year’s Sanvers Week, and so my question is: Would you rather I:
Wrote a smutty part 4 for that soulmate AU (see Stronger Together Chapters 80, 86, and 96 for the first 3 parts) - realistically, I don’t know how strong the “soulmate” vibes will be in comparison to just, ya know, smut
Or did a new soulmate AU that will probably only be one chapter, though, if it ends up being like the other chapters I’ve been drafting for that week, it’ll still be on the longer side
If you prefer a new one, let me know what kind of soulmate universe you want it to be. (Which is 100% my way of saying please give me ideas!) It’s not really my genre (for basically all of the reasons I let Alex and Maggie give in my existing soulmate AU), so I’m super unfamiliar with ways in which soulmates are marked/designated/signaled/whatever you want to call it. Or maybe you’re ambivalent about the idea and would rather I skip that day and go a little bit longer on the other chapters. Let me know your thoughts!
As I mentioned earlier this year, I have a goal to record an EP of some of my music and make it available from sites like Bandcamp, iTunes, etc.. I’m thinking of trying to include 5 or so pieces and I’d love to know if you have any favorites you’d like me to include.
All 39 pieces I’ve posted so far are available on the Just Listen page. I’d love it if you’d take a look and listen and comment…
we here at MIM are currently undergoing some changes of the way in which we run things. in doing so it occurred to us that since we are a blog for you guys first and foremost, that we might be better served by asking you all the following questions:
are you happy with the current ways in which we answer questions? what are ways we can improve?
do you see the potential in our vlogs or have further suggestions for them?
what would you think of an twice yearly (or more) e-zine that talks about mental health and other concerns?
what would you think of group chats with moderators?
what do you think of the tagging system? is it easy to find questions or difficult?
any other concerns/comments you’d like to make?
please send answers/comments our way via our ask box/fanmail.

I've gotten rather adept at managing my expectations as far as getting responses to posts like this, but I remain stalwart and hopeful enough to make them anyways, so here it goes. I've been thinking a lot lately about the changing landscape of online fandom, particularly those changes brought about with the advent if tumblr, and have been trying to sort out those thoughts into some cohesive, structured analysis. I am only one fan, though, so I want to know what other veteran fans think. So if there any fans here in tumblr who have participated in online fandom since before tumblr became a center of operation—Livejournal era and earlier—who would be willing to share their thoughts and/or feelings (positive and/or negative) about the changes that have come with new platforms, I would be very interested. Topics of specific interest for me include the rise of "headcanons" as a fannish activity, "conceptual fic" (such as posts urging one to "imagine your OTP, and image sets that refer to fanfictional universes that remain unwritten as fic), and the proliferation of AUs (especially when they become a participatory world-building activity). Anything about what such activities might spell for the future of fandom or what impact they are having on older modes of fandom, such as long format fanfiction and meta-fandom essays, would also be received enthusiastically. I know it is a long shot that I will generate much interest in this subject, but if there is any chance, I have to ask.
I may have an interesting option out of my situation. But it would require careful planning, and assistance. Please, give me your honest opinions on this, as well as any ideas you may think of that might help.
A local aid center will basically offer people what's essentially a one-way ticket out. Usually, they'll literally buy you a bus ticket to anywhere in the lower 48 states, on the condition that if you ever return, you are blacklisted from getting help from the agency ever again. There is a similar alternative that requires more meeting and planning with them, but they are also willing to pay for gas if someone prefers to drive their own vehicle instead.
I learned about this a couple months ago. But as much as it's pissing me off right now, I don't want to sell my scooter. And of course, I can't take my dog on the bus (and she's too old/sick to travel very far on the scooter any more). My dog will not be a factor for very much longer. That bit of the near future is going to just about kill me, but it does open up options as far as less tying me down to any one particular area.
I'm considering the option of taking the gas money. I would also have to prove that I've got somewhere to stay when I get to the other end. My instincts tell me initially that I should choose Austin, where I grew up and still know many people. I have multiple friends currently telling me there's tons of jobs available (which is the opposite of here).
At first, I thought taking this option would be admitting failure. But you know what? At least I tried. I wasn't afraid to risk it all. Most people never do that. I can try again some other time, too, I'm not dead yet. Perhaps I can start over where I started off to begin with.
Before you freak out at the concept of me riding a scooter halfway across the country, let me stop you right there. I've already done it. When I came out to LA the first time in 2003, that's exactly how I got here. I rode my scooter from Texas (it was less than half the engine size of the one I have now). I've literally done this entire trip before.
However, I would need help to do it again. I desperately need 2 oil changes on the bike (one before leaving, one upon arrival), and as long as I can buy the oil, I can do those myself. I need a new set of tires, and the labor to get them installed. And I need to figure out what to do about lodging and food on the way--the aid center will ONLY cover gas (last time that was only $52 for the entire trip). If I do this, it will likely be in August or September, so it will be way too hot to risk camping (that's what I did the last time, in KOA campsites). My mileage on such a trip varies greatly every day due to weather conditions, so it's extremely hard to plan ahead as far as where I can make it to spend the night, and I don't ride after dark on long trips. I've gone anywhere from just over 100 miles in a day due to a horrific storm, to over 500 in one day with the wind at my back and good road conditions. I may or may not have friends that can vouch for me having a place to stay in Austin yet--I haven't even gotten that far in my research phase.
Please tell me your thoughts on this. I don't want to leave LA, but I do seem to have hit a dead end for the time being. Maybe I did fail this time around, but at least I tried. I've already got some great stories from the short time I've been back here.
So, four WIPs might be stretching me a little thin...
I'd like to see what my readers are most interested in.
Please take a moment to fill out this quick survey, ranking my 4 current WIPs, so I know where to put most of my energy. I'm not abandoning any of them, but I will probably spend more time working on a more popular fic than a less popular fic.
