      “ You saw it, didn’t you? ” The mess Neil had unleashed on Kathy’s show... --- Bucky hadn’t been there to witness nor  stop it. Not that his presence would have changed anything about Neil’s knee jerk reaction to Riko being the piece of shit he is. But maybe he wouldn’t have gone in as hard as he had if rather than seeing Wymack and Matt trying to hold Andrew down and the worry on the foxes’ faces, seen Bucky sitting absolutely calm and collected... Would Bucky have been able to remain calm? He was too good of a man to stay still as Riko bullied Kevin into giving in and playing along with him. Neil wasn’t sorry and he wasn’t going to apologize to anyone, but if this meant he’d drawn too much attention on himself and that soon, said attention might swipe over to Bucky, he’d understand. He’d understand if Bucky were to want to LEAVE.

                    But... rather than looking upset or mad, Bucky looked ... amused. 

Sighing, he lets the woman scan his items and watched the couple ponder over his items. He didn’t want any questions so he turned around to the next person in line, continuing this ‘pay-it-forward’ chain. He has learnt this during his time in the states.

            “Listen, I’m paying for your stuff. This is your chance -- grab everything you need before she’s done scanning mine.”

             “I say we go straight to my place, order different types of fast food, and stay in for the rest of the day.” 

Bucky’s new hair cut had worked just as they had expected it would. The jury was more open to listen to him even though throughout the first couple of weeks they had managed to win over a couple of them already. This? And the pictures taken afterwards, was to influence the public eye even further. James Buchanan Barnes was a victim of the war; one who deserved to be left in peace, not locked up. Asher had already rushed ahead, cheering as if they’d won the case when, still, they were at the beginning of the entire deal.

            “Unless you do want to go out with these losers. Then, I guess, I might be bribed into coming along.”

      “Sometimes I feel like a pendulum. Swinging back and forth, trying to stay at the equilibrium but never managing more than a blink. Then, when I actually manage, everything is too still and I’m too numb... and I wish to swing maybe just a little again.”

Alaric and Bucky hit it off pretty quickly. Alaric likes Bucky’s dry sense of humor and Bucky likes the way Alaric snorts when he’s being funny and no one else has noticed. Plus it’s smart to find someone seriously tough who you trust early on and they’ve got a pretty good match there.

Alaric has a rotten crush on Bucky (this is inevitable; I haven’t been able to discern exactly why this happens but no matter the setting, Ric crushes on Bucky), but listening to him talk about this incredible friend he has back home, Steve, and how smart he is, and how beautifully he draws, he’s smart enough not to let slip.

Alaric would have done anything to join the Howling Commandos but he was injured too severely during the capture, and by the time he was back at the front, Steve was in the ice and Bucky was presumed dead.

He and Bucky played brutal poker games for cigarettes. They both counted cards. They both kinda knew the other was counting cards. It was essentially a game of ‘who is faster and more accurate at counting cards and who has the better system’. 

   David had insisted no one would be able to tell the difference between a fresh pie and one they bought at the store, knowing better than to ask Abby for a recipe or getting his own hands dirty. The trick with pie you buy at the store is to bake it in your oven for five to ten minutes to give it a slightly over-done look. No one would believe a pie with slightly brown edges to be bought at the store. Besides, who even cares about desert at a barbecue? 

            They had already talked to Bucky’s boss and now, standing on the far end of the garden, David tried his hardest to balance his cup on his plate in one hand while putting together his burger. --- See, burgers. That’s what people care about. 

                “ You sure you don’t want any? I gotta admit, these are good! --- Or are you scared you couldn’t keep it in when we go on the trampoline? Because you can bet your ASS we’ll get on that thing. ” He picked his burger up, using it to point at Bucky before waving it around, luckily enough not losing his patty in the process. “ You know, my poor hips ‘n’ I, wouldn’t want to take the risk of jumping by my own, it wouldn’t be responsible and Abby wouldn’t let you see the end of it if I’d break a bone. ”

                      Nathaniel had accepted his end the moment he’d been dragged away from the foxes and pulled into the car. As soon as the handcuffs tightened around his wrists, he knew it was over. --- There was no escaping any of this. His father had found him and he would finally finish what he had started eighteen years ago. He hadn’t expected for anyone to find him alive; hadn’t expected for Bucky to catch up with them... He had hoped that Bucky would protect the foxes rather than following or finding him, considering that NEIL’S foolishness had gotten them dragged in Nathaniel’s mess to begin with.

He was tired, eyes heavy, hands aching with the shallow cuts Lola had left all over him. The U-turn surprised him, slamming him against the door and window with the impact of the sudden turn, gaze immediately focused on Bucky; wide awake. “What are you doing?” They had to leave. --- They had to RUN! It was the only way ... But the butcher knew about the foxes. He would kill them one by one; skin them alive, to get to Nathaniel.  “We need to go to Baltimore.” And in that moment, Nathaniel realized that Bucky, too, thought the same, taking them back to the direction Nathaniel’s abductor had been heading to.

                            All things considered, it was fair to say that neither of them cared about the movie they were in now. They’d watched Just Imagine, which Bucky had LOVED and it seemed reasonable to stay for another screening. --- It might not have been entirely legal, but buying a ticket to Just Imagine hadn’t exactly been cheap, either, therefore, they deserved to watch another movie. They choose the one no one cared about; it was around noon / early evening and most people were either just getting out of work or getting ready to go home. Either way, the theater was relatively empty as it was, yet, the movie they choose ... Now ... --- It might have been bold to assume Steve and Bucky choose the movie judging by how many people had walked into the screening room but that’s exactly what they did. There were a couple of people, three, at most, sitting in the middle and the front, and there were Bucky and Steve. Sitting in the last row with their backs to the wall, the light of the projector dancing over their heads as they sat.

             “ You know, ” Steve whispered, licking over his lips. “ if we don’t like the movie, we can just leave. ”  Just two boys being boys; two friends spending their free day together. Nothing out of the ordinary. No.
