Is the United States really democratic?
When one thinks of the political system in America today, the first word to come to mind is almost invariably "Democracy". The term democracy has had a long history of political rhetoric in our country, from President Franklin Roosevelt's "Arsenal of Democracy" at the start of WWII, to President George W. Bush's use of the term as one of the major goals in the war on terror. Democracy, however, is only partially descriptive of what form of organization our government uses.
The best way to describe it would be as a country based on the idea of Representative Democracy, or more commonly; a Republic. A Republic is based on the idea that the people, in our case this refers to citizens of the United States who are of voting age, will vote to elect individuals into power to make decisions for us. Theoretically, these representatives will be experts in the study of economics, foreign relations, and all other necessary skills that will allow them to make educated decisions on a level that the average individual cannot.
There have been many philosophers and political scientists throughout history who have commented on the need for a form of representative democracy to exist, and perhaps two of the most vocal and well known among them were James Madison, and the English Political Philosopher John Locke. Both of these individuals strongly advocated for Representative Democracy as a form of effective government to preside over the individual rights of citizens, the economic prosperity of the country, and the many groups within society.
Though it has been agreed-upon that the United States IS in fact a Republic and not a Democracy, this leads to many questions about Democracy and its impact on our society.
