Sorry to interrupt the Eurovision news, but this is a very important topic to me and I’d like to share a true Irish woman’s thoughts with other Europeans today.

Sadly, Martin McGuinness has passed away from a rare heart condition which, to my knowledge, has remained undisclosed out of respect for his family’s privacy.

I know there’s a lot out there about McGuinness: that he was a terrorist, that he killed many people through bombing campaigns, that he was a vila man who deserves to rot in hell.

From an Irishwoman born in a border town: Martin McGuinness will be sorely missed by the majority of us over here as a giant of Northern Irish politics and a fundamental part of the peace process.

There’s been so many comments online today - and even in the main media - from people with very little understanding of The Troubles or what it means to live in a place like Derry. A lot of people have presumed to have known the man’s character despite never having met him.
