How does this moment feel different and why?
I believe that people are really discovering their own power in a broader sense that we have not seen in a very long time. So, yes, we’re starting to see some of this emerging power at the ballot box and at the polls, but we're also starting to see it in the streets, and people standing up for themselves in the workplace, in organizing themselves and their labor, and it’s profoundly exciting. And it’s really incredible to see how people are really taking the reins for themselves in the direction of systemic change.
How do you incorporate your activism into your daily life?
Well, they’re very intertwined. But, I like to think that I approach my work as an activist, and my job is to be a legislator. And so through that, I’m able to fuse both of those things, which means taking risks, which means being willing to do things unconventionally in order to shake the table and make sure that people get everything done that they have earned and deserve.
How has this moment galvanized you and your activism?
I think that all these people in the streets that are educating others, that are engaging in this elevated and amplified way, have really emboldened me, and it’s given me a lot of courage and encouragement to try to match the energy of everyone else right now who’s really fighting for progressive change.
What is one specific fact, news story, or aspect that you feel has not received enough attention?
I think our eviction crisis has not gotten enough attention at all. We are talking about tens of millions of Americans who are unemployed, whose unemployment assistance and insurance is tenuous, which comes and goes if people are able to get it at all, and people are about to lose their homes. And there are so many people that fall through the gaps, people that Congress denies, and we may be at the precipice of an enormous housing crisis if Congress doesn’t do anything and act to provide rent and mortgage relief right now.
