Why is RENT important?
Problems of airing a not-so-live version of RENT last night, let’s revisit the impact the show had on theater itself.
Twenty-three years later, it may be easy to overlook the fact RENT was wildly important. A 1997 review states: “it is clear that Rent is a work of true originality, created by a serious young artist who has written passionately about people whose lives he understands. In so doing, he has used contemporary musical idioms (rock, gospel, calypso, rap) within a dramatic context far more effectively than previous Broad- way composers. Larson's work has come closer than any other since Hair to solving the dilemma of making Broadway music once again.”

Literally RENT tonight fucking murdered me. Tinashe could step on my face and I’d still thank her. Vanessa Hudgens has only reaffirmed my gayness. Brennin Hunt just sat in his cast and still killed me. Jordan Fisher could tango with me any day. Brandon Victor Dixon could kick a kitten and I’d still worship him. Valentina slayed me in the first few minutes of her appearance. Kiersey Clemons was the butch everyone aspires to be. Every single person who worked on that production made my night, actually made my month. I was on the verge of tears practically every scene. The camera work was perfect and the setting was amazing. All of the live musicians made me feel horrible about myself (which means they’re awesome). Everything about this show was amazing and I’m in love.
