No way she was wearing heels while swinging a chainsaw at his face. Iconic. I’m jealous
rewatching s2 now and I think Renni was the one behind Finn's coup attempt. here is my theory.
When Finn begins his incendiary speech to the other chembarons none of them really react which implies that regardless of how they feel about what he's saying, they're used to his posturing and see it as an empty threat. Another meeting how boring here he goes again. Finn is considerably younger than the other chembarons and less experienced, his overconfidence and arrogance compensate for his lack of accumulated power compared to them. He may be rich and successful but he doesn't have the clout that they do and there just isn't any reason the others would fall in line behind him even if Silco did just suddenly drop dead one day. Walking up to Sevika in public like that to talk to her also is an example of how his arrogance undercuts his decision making. He takes risks that will and do get him in trouble. He seems to be partially aware of this, though, as he makes his speech to the chembarons and tries to win over Sevika knowing that even if he acts like it, he can't do it alone. He needs help.
Here's where Renni comes in. When she's at the fateful meeting where Sevika kills Finn she's standing to the side, seemingly working for Finn, not positioned as an equal partner or co-conspirator. This idea that she was just an underling is understandable especially because Finn is the one leading the coup, and he is the one Sevika kills. It's also notable because while Sevika kills Finn then and there, Renni is given mercy and allowed to go free, as if she barely had a part in it. It's one thing if Silco doesn't think it's a particularly good idea to start killing all the other chembarons no matter how much he hates them. It's another thing that he seems to have no plan for *Renni* specifically and only asks Sevika if she was tempted to betray him for *Finn*, despite the fact that everyone knows of Renni's distaste for Silco especially after - and this is the big thing for me that makes me think about Renni's motives- Renni's son was killed by Jayce's attack. We know and Silco knows that Renni is deeply unsatisfied by his seeming lack of energy in the wake of her child's death and is now more than ever willing to fight Piltover even if she isn't exactly calling herself a revolutionary. (Their mutual dislike is probably is part of why they didn't manage to incite much of a revolutionary movement- perfect or not- together.) It would be easy to say that Silco's seeming dismissal of Renni as a genuine threat comes of out of misogyny and believing that she's "only" a grieving mother who sided with Finn out of hysterical emotion and isn't actually going to do anything significant, but I don't think this is it. I think as much as Silco despises the chembarons he realizes his responsibility in creating the system they thrive under and to a point understands their mindsets, and more than that, doesn't particularly blame Renni for wanting to violently avenge her son because he can put himself in her shoes as a parent- after all, Renni did call him out on Jinx being his weakness.
All of this is to say that Renni has a greater motive than Finn does to stage a coup. New leadership will enable her to avenge her child and have a say in how it's done. It's not just a get rich quick scheme for her as it is for Finn, who is openly dismissive of the idea of revolution and sees it as a waste of time- again, an interesting detail about his youth. He didn't just forget things like the Grey, he is too young to understand what it was like. Renni, while we don't get a real deep dive into her politics....we see a lot that indicates she is ready for war with Piltover, if not quite a revolution. So when Finn talks big and doesn't have much to back it up with - Renni, who does have the power, experience, and establishment he lacks, has a lot to get out of allying with him while allowing him to think he's the real leader because if anything goes wrong he will take the blame. Which is what happens - the scene of Finn being killed in front of her horrifies her, but it enables her to live another day, and of course ally with Ambessa to conduct the attack on the memorial.
Ambessa steps in to the narrative around the same time as Renni's son dies. It's easy to imagine that maybe Ambessa and Renni could have began making deals with each other sooner rather than later. But either way, somewhere along the line, Renni planned her attack. And while she couldn't have done exactly everything that she did the way she did it without Ambessa.....Ambessa gets blamed a greater proportion for the attack by people. It was orchestrated by her, sure, and nothing that happened was without her approval. But it's clear that something was going to happen with or without her. Renni was going to do something regardless of who would or wouldn't let her, and it's evident not just in her grief and rage. Renni's technology is very advanced, with extremely big and powerful machines. This is not some stuff she threw together over the weekend. This is work that long predated the death of her son. She was working on these weapons for a long time. "You aren't safe up here," is her message she broadcasts. She was ready, and she'd been planning for a while, and she didn't even have to do anything to get Silco out of her way.
She made Finn's mistake, though, and didn't realize she was being used. She was only useful to Ambessa for a little while, and was quickly discarded, just as quickly as she abandoned Finn's still-warm corpse. I don't think she necessarily underestimated Ambessa's capability, but she seemed surprised by Ambessa's turning on her. It's an interesting full-circle moment. It makes you wonder... What could have a war looked like with Renni leading Zaun, what could have Zaun looked like with Renni in charge? Probably not great, but it's hard to know details beyond that because Renni relied too much on keeping quiet until the moment of the attack. Like Silco, her power as a wealthy chembaron came at the cost of whatever ideals she may have held. She may have wanted a free Zaun, but she spent so long wanting to hold onto her own power while also saving her own skin, that she didn't fight for it, not even in a flawed imperfect way, until it was too late, and she did not even realize she was the fall guy.
you guys ever think about Renni (the chembaron) in Heavy is the Crown... who did what she did specifically to get justice/revenge for the murder of her young son? What she did being one attack on a memorial which, while being inarguably bad, was prompted/supported by Ambessa? Which is then followed by her getting put down by Ambessa with almost comical ease, and then being literally forgotten for the rest of the story.
And yet when KKKaitlyn does what she does- what she does being NOT ONLY the multiple intentional and methodical uses of the Grey, which because of Viktor we KNOW can have long term medical effects that can lead to death. (An idea and method KKKaitlyn came up with and used herself with nothing to do with Ambessa might I add). She ALSO became a Fascist Dictator for 3-6 months with Ambessa's support. But when KKKAITLYN does this she's forgiven by the story and gets more or less a happy ending.
Both characters were motivated by the untimely murder of a loved one. One of these loved ones was a child. The other was a literal adult and a Counselor. The parallels are insane.
when i was on my Arcane reactor kick I saw this comment that honestly rocked me to the core. I can't quite find the source sorry but the quote was “What kind of animals would attack a memorial ? The kind who doesn't get to have memorials in the first place”
