June 19th is celebrated annually across the United States as Juneteenth, a holiday marking the freedom of formerly enslaved African Americans on June 19, 1865.
This year, Juneteenth arrives amidst the context of THE largest civil rights protests across the world since the 1960s.
As someone who has celebrated Juneteenth for a long time, I think we need it now β not in lieu of the freedom, justice & equality we are still fighting for β but in addition to, because we have been fighting for so very long.
For me, Juneteenth truly matters because it signifies that we keep going as the future we want collectively as a country & throughout the world is coming!
