sometimes it seemed possible that nightmares would one day rise far beyond the dreamscape and somehow claw their way free of the mind entirely. and as of late, sephiroth had been plagued with such demons. like echoing songs, his mind was an open cavern for such thoughts, such damning and terrible ideas sowing into doubts. doubts into weeds. weeds into forests. he had yet to truly sleep. even when the moon hung low enough across nibelheim that he imagined himself able to reach out and clutch it tight within his fist and crush it into mere dust. even when the world was so still that the creaking of the reactor could have been heard upon the wind. and yet the nightmares were there. living, breathing things he saw within his time awake as well. doubt. confusion.
he had a worried smile, seemingly fixed permanently to his face. that typical, zackness of it all, how he worried but in an honest, innocent kind of way. he nudged sephiroth lightly against his shoulder and the other sighed, weakness reacting until he shook away the touch entirely. something was changing within him, this new yearning for truth he had always sought but was now a thicker flame, a burning passion he could not overlook. would it consume him, as it supposedly had done genesis? but zack didn’t seem to understand, he didn’t know. it was ignorant to think zack could look deep within his mind and see everything bare before him, but sephiroth almost willed it to be possible, perhaps just for a moment.
he had spent the day and night in the mass of literature beneath the shinra mansion. corners of it felt familiar, but for reasons he did not yet understand. so much paperwork, so much of it that he could have built a wall of it to hide himself behind, but he did not. zack waded through the mess as if the folders were toxic puddles, keen to return to sephiroth’s side. but the warrior was shaking. slightly. trembling, his gloved hand clutching something so tight that zack thought it might just tear. but he stilled when zack’s hand came to meet his back. as if zack was a calming relief for a sickness sephiroth did not know he possessed.
the words came colder than usual. zack did not move, however. he was protective, concerned, loyal. all of the things a soldier ought to be, if heroism were indeed the law he wished to abide. but sephiroth was distant and zack disliked it. if sephiroth wished to be alone, he only half wanted to leave him. instead he leaned closer, their relationship allowed it, his touch shifting to become more of an embrace. sephiroth did not move, his eyes however flew across the paperwork before him before he sighed once more. zack’s embrace was addictive; a charm and a guilty pleasure he allowed in brief bursts. a secret treat for an emotion he did not fully understand. he’d read that it was love. he’d been told that it was loneliness. he did not embrace him in return, however, but he did release the folders and allowed zack to indulge him in that moment of comfort.
firmer. but he still did not move. zack pulled away an inch, but only to press his face a little closer. it felt... wrong. he was close to learning something, close to finding the truth as opposed to the poetic ramblings genesis had tried to distract him with. but zack blinded him. he felt his heart skip out of anxious foreboding, and... something else. whatever it was, it frothed amongst the confusion and the impending relentless desire to seek out his truth until — he leaned into the warmth zack offered and their lips met in an almost-hurried expression of desperation. it was innocent, considering, but hardly brief at all. he almost hoped that the urgency of sephiroth’s goals would transfer somehow, that zack would understand and then leave, because this was so unlike him, so unlike everything normal and usual about him, that he was almost truly ashamed.
