The halfling knew that knock. But it couldn't have been. Of course not. The owner of that knock was gone ---- not forgotten of course, not ever, and perhaps that was why the thought of Thorin Oakenshield was ever so clear and crisp in Bilbo Baggins' memory. Any visitor that called; although not many did in recent weeks, he longed for it to be any of the friends he lost on the battlefield between a demolished city of Dale, and a kingdom under the mountain never truly reclaimed. The past fourteen months had come to a pitiful end, and in his grief, the Hobbit had sunk comfortably back into bad habits. And a life of solitude was in front of him, now. It suited him quite nicely. "No, there's nobody home. I suggest you go and bother somebody else."

The young heir could still feel his heart hammering beneath his chest as he saw his uncle, blue hues fixed upon his form and brows furrowed before he stepped forward. One step, then another. A part of him wished to engulf the other in a hug, hold him close, thank Mahal he was still alive. But there was another part that whispered it was unbecoming of a prince to break before others. So instead he ended up putting a hand to the other's shoulder, a smile blooming upon his face, eyes glistening. "We thought you lost to us, Thorin..." he spoke, swallowing once before dipping his head, eyes closing for a second. "Thank Mahal you are not..."

Adding on to this, my friends and I were drabbling different characters' reactions to Thorin's goldsickness once (long before BoFA came out) and I did Fili and I was like "...huh. This could be interesting to explore. --Oh fuck now I want to make a Fili."
☆ - How did you go about getting a grip on your muse’s character?
Ummmm...putting myself in Fili's shoes, I guess? Like, imagining the things that happened in his life that would have shaped him and then sort of just...shaping...his...personality...?

Fili's steps are careful as he makes the descent into the cavernous chamber, settled deep inside the mountain. The golden glow of Thror's treasure hoard taints his skin, and he has to fight the urge to try and scrub it from him - knowing now what it has done to their bloodline - as he draws nearer.
He knows his Uncle will be here, down in the depths amongst the kingdoms wealth; where he has dwelt in the days since Fili had reached the mountain. He does not know what he hopes to achieve by coming here, only that the sight of the elder so out of himself chills him to his very core. He has heard tales of the dragon- sickness. He has heard what it can do. He cannot bear the thought of his Uncle meeting the same fate.
A war rages outside their battlements; he would rather they greet death out there, with pride and honour, rather than sequestered away in the dark like cowards. For death is inevitable now.
