They should have known Remus’s absence would be discovered instantly. They collected him every morning after the full moon, for crying out loud. It was a stupid oversight, and they should have been more prepared. Regulus looked over at Sirius’s still form.
He hadn’t moved since Regulus had revived him. He hadn’t spoken a word either, not even to James. Regulus had tried to change into Midnight to comfort him, but he couldn’t reach his feline self. The link was severed. Thalira really had taken them away.
The inhabitants of the sixth-year Gryffindor dorm room were subdued for the rest of the day. Peter had found one of Remus’s jumpers balled up at the end of Sirius’s bed and folded it neatly before slipping it under Sirius’s arm. Sirius curled up into an even tighter ball, and that was the last time he made any effort to move.
Around three o’clock, there was a soft knock at the door, and Evan, Barty and Dorcas came in.
“We heard Flitwick talking to McGonagall,” Dorcas told them as she settled herself on Peter’s bed. “Honestly, rookie mistake. They would know better than to talk about anything private without at least a muffling charm,” she tisked, shaking her head with disapproval. “They know Remus is missing.”
“Yeah, we know. McGonagall came bursting in here not long after we got back. She doesn’t know anything. Hopefully, they’ll just assume that he got out and ended up so far into the forest that it takes him a while to get back,” Regulus replied.
“They’ll have sent an owl to his parents already,” Barty said knowingly.
“They could send out the entire Ministry into that forest. If Thalira doesn’t want them to be found, they won’t be,” Evan added.
“Three days and he’ll be back,” James added, trying to sound optimistic, but only slightly missing the mark. Regulus looked over at Sirius and frowned. Finally, he looked up and addressed the others in the room.
“We have three days to train, and for once, our lives do actually depend on it. We need to be ready to help Pandora and Remus.”
