Crime in the Streets was released on 10 June 1956.

The film was an adaptation of Reginald Rose's 1955 teleplay, which was directed by Sidney Lumet and starred John Cassavetes and Mark Rydell. Lumet was offered to direct the film version (which would have been his feature debut), but Lumet had already committed to 12 Angry Men (also written by Rose and also first broadcast on TV) and Don Siegel was brought on. Cassavetes and Rydell reprised their roles for the film. Sam Peckinpah was the dialogue coach on the film, and Siegel credited him with helping with work on the screenplay.

This is a perfect movie. I am reticent to apply any other adjective to it, because I'm sure all of the appropriate ones have been used. I keep thinking about the silence after "You don't really mean you'll kill me, do you". And the quietude that descends when the rain starts, the peace. And of course the silence at the end, that Juror #3 cannot tolerate. The silences make the yelling matches stand out, but the screaming makes the silences burn. The script ebbs and flows, and ebbs again.
