I really wish the community would realize that the word "spirit(s)" doesn't mean anything. arguably if you're an animist the word "spirit" means roughly the same as the word "thing." questions of recognizing spirits, feeling or seeing spirits, working with spirits, etc are moot questions because they're not actually asking anything meaningful. you're 'working with spirits' every time you pull a cup of coffee out of the machine and look at your cat and wipe down your counters.

at best 'spirit' is an anthropological (and at that secular-eurocentric) term that has various meanings depending on context and user, but none of the commonplace meanings of the word 'spirit' are actually useful for us, because even then it narrows down nothing. on top of that, in a functional animistic worldview, the idea of 'spirits' doesn't exclude the physical and living, even though witchy folks don't seem to include them in their definition of them.

outside of european anthropology, there are a million ways to define the word 'spirit' and a million kinds of 'spirits' within any given definition. cultural beliefs don't have some overarching idea of intangible presences, but countless individual types of beings in the world and often some system of taxonomy or organization among those beings.

if you are somebody who regularly does 'spirit work', it's imperative to refine your understanding of the beings you regularly work with. you should be able to categorize and understand them beyond vague and impractical ideas. and, more importantly, they should be integrated into your understanding of the rest of the world, rather than treated as completely separate and different from it.

in fun news, i’m officially over halfway done with draft 1 of Bearskin!

to be fair – I’m at 43k in the main draft, and I have ~10k of out-of-order scenes in my side document, but I’m counting it, dammit! considering I honestly thought this WIP would be 70k at first, it’s kind of a breath of fresh air to realize just how much I’ve already done, and that 103k (the current estimate for this draft) is actually not that far away.

i’ll be taking a bit of a break throughout nano to work on Only Saints (but I’ll still be working on Bearskin after my OS writing is done for the day), but I’m super stoked to finish this draft!
