Redyk is a traditional name for the annual trailing of the sheep by the highlanders from the mountainous regions in southern Poland. It happens two times in the year: at the beginning of the spring for a start of the herding season and before winter when the sheep are being brought back to their winter shelters. The two events are called redyk wiosenny (spring trailing) and redyk jesienny (autumnal trailing). In the past those were treasured events, placed among the most important annual festivals in the local culture of the shepherds. They were accompanied by festivities, prayers, music and magickal rites meaning to protect the animals and their owners. During the contemporary redyk it happens often that the herds have to pass through roads on the outskirts of the local towns - the streets are then completely blocked when the hundreds or sometimes even thousands of the sheep are moving on their old trail.
