Speculative design 1
 Nowadays whose coastal inhabitants are currently struggling with climate change-related sea level rises. Different designers come up with the different design to solve the problem.
AT Design Office has come up with a concept of Floating City, but it actually not floating on the water, the foundational city floor is made by hexagonal modules that overlap together. Through the network of underground walkways and roads, it create the underwater city system. "Part of that bridge is an underwater tunnel, which is joined by a 150-metre-long precast concrete box," explained architect Slavomir Siska. Therefore people have opportunity to live both above or under water.
You might thought about the life when you live under the water, yachts and submarine will become the main vehicle under the water. There will be a chimney in the center of the city which provide natural ventilation and light to the residents. The city feature in self-sustaining and eco-friendly. Green space, hatcheries and rubbish collection facilities will available in this city.
Bjarke Ingels’ firm has developed a student halls with the shipping containers on the water. This design is aims to provide low-cost housing for students in the centre of the Copenhagen. I was pretty interesting in this design as it not only feature in speculative but also sustainable. The most important is the low cost material.Â
The design is quite simply, it just stacking nine shipping containers on a floating platform. By stacking shipping containers in different level and angel, it create both public and private space for the student.Â
The window on the side of the container allow the sunlight into the interior maximum, which achieve the natural energy system.Â
I purpose to put these two different design together, as they design to solve different problem but they come up with the same idea which is the space in/on the water. I really like the idea of the underwater city, by thinking about the city constitute system and put it into another environment. However the first idea has come up into my mind is the cost. How can we built up a space under the water due to the water pressure. Then I have saw this design, skyscrapers comprising stacks of brightly colored shipping containers designer by CRG Architects, which suggest to replace slum housing. In my opinion, this skyscrapers mean a city for me as well. I really like to combine these idea together, the city system, stacking and the low cost material.
