❝  chains  ?  ❞  she  echoed  weakly.  despite  the  way  her  voice  wavered,  her  grip  on  his  arm  remained  iron  -  tight,  as  if  that  alone  would  keep  him  from  attempting  to  barrel  into  the  water  once  again.  petals  tumbled  freely  from  her  locks  as  she  shook  her  head,  as  if  to  clear  her  mind  of  the  fright  she  endured  moments  earlier  :  whoever  this  stranger  was  thought  he  could  cross  the  untamed  river  unharmed,  and  if  she  hadn’t  raced  down  the  hill,  yanked  him  back,  and  scolded  him  for  his  heedless  venture,  he  would  have  drowned.  ❝  well,  if  it’s  danger  you  want,  there’s  more  pleasant  ways  to  find  it  than  drowning.  ❞  living  recklessly,  to  her,  did  not  seem  like  truly  living.  then  again,  her  sisters  willfully  claimed  she  got  herself  into  trouble  frequently,  even  though  she  found  her  excursions  and  adventures  quite  reasonable.  perhaps  she  could  come  to  understand  him.

‘ that’s rich, ’  THANATOS scowls, hurt evident in his voice. it is a bitterness that cannot be offset by the sweetness of nectar, and the gifting of ambrosia would cause him to LAUGH. (  he cannot bear to taste the memories of ambrosia, the sweet saccharine nature of their youth, or the sanguine burn on his tongue. he loves life, loves blood, but surely he cannot be loved back. not when zagreus wants to leave the underworld - leave death - so badly.  )   ‘ you admit that what you’re doing is wrong but you continue to do it at no cost to yourself, or to the others here. what a slap in the face, zagreus. i’ll see you later. maybe. ’

Nico realized he was clenching his fists and forced them to relax. It didn’t go well, his fingers splaying out unnaturally stiff before he shoved his hands out of sight and into his pockets.

Well, that was one of them anyway, and Nico gave Zagreus a long look. Good for him though, and Nico meant it earnestly. Somehow Zagreus had escaped that shared trait with their father, and he was almost certainly the better for it. A muscle worked in his jaw for a moment, a bitter worrying over the same old memories and grudges that he should have let go of long ago but hadn’t, before he let his shoulders relax.

it  wasn’t  the  first  time  they  saw  each  other  naked  :  far  from  it,  in  fact,  with  all  of  the  times  they  bathed  in  lakes  and  rivers  throughout  their  journey.  this  was  the  first  proper  bath  she  had  since  leaving  home  —  well,  since  leaving  the  castle  of  her  sisters.  home  was  something  she  relinquished  when  she  decided  freedom  was  more  important  than  familiarity.

despite  her  exhaustion,  the  corners  of  her  lips  lifted  in  a  small  smile  when  he  extended  his  hand.  the  tub  was  deep  and  massive,  more  than  large  enough  for  the  both  of  them,  and  she  was  grateful  zagreus  was  there  to  steady  her  as  she  climbed  in.  she  released  a  long  exhale  as  the  hot  water  engulfed  her  calves,  then  crept  up  her  thighs  and  waist  as  she  sank  to  her  knees  and  sat.

megaera  was  the  first  to  break  the  comfortable  silence  with  a  low  chuckle  as  she  watched  the  dirt  on  her  hands  dissolve.  ❝  we’re  disgusting  .  .  .  i’m  amazed  your  father  allowed  us  inside.  ❞  she  hadn’t  noticed  how  filthy  they  both  truly  were  until  she  stepped  across  the  pristine  threshold  and  glimpsed  her  reflection  in  a  nearby  mirror.  of  course,  even  if  she  hadn’t  seen  herself,  king  hades’  expression  of  pure  disgust  told  her  everything.

❝  turn  around,  ❞  she  instructed  as  she  took  the  bowl,  soap,  and  one  of  the  washcloths  from  the  nearby  table,  and  for  once,  he  readily  obeyed.  as  she  saturated  the  cloth,  she  poured  water  across  his  back,  then  lathered  the  soap  on  the  cloth.  ❝  you  know  zagreus,  ❞  she  began  as  she  scrubbed  the  grime  from  between  his  shoulders,  ❝  i  never  properly  thanked  you  for  trusting  me.  ❞  she  asked  a  lot  of  him  when  she  told  him  she  would  aid  in  his  escape,  and  he  could  have  easily  left  her  to  deal  with  the  consequences  of  betraying  her  sisters,  but  .  .  .  he  insisted  she  deserved  to  live.  the  more  they  saw  together,  the  more  she  wanted  to.  ❝  so  .  .  .  thank  you.  really.  ❞
