“Soul…mate?” She wrinkled her nose, “but I don’t wanna soulmate! I like how things are.”

Papa cooed, pushing himself to sit crisscross before pulling her up into his lap. “It’s not like that, sweetie. It’s… your soulmate probably isn’t someone you’ll meet until you’re a lot older. They’re sort of like your promised… friend."

A Promised Friend, that’s how her Papa had described soulmates.

But how was she meant to be friends with someone so different from her?

(Or: In a world where most have a soulmate who they can communicate with by drawing on their skin, Sandy and Rusty have been paired together. This would be fine if they had absolutely anything in common).
