Lore
In the Lore section:
Neromenian [Tevinter city] is also invaded by the Qunari.
Explanation of how to make Blue Wraiths: it requires Danarius' Sarcophagus, a sword made out of normal lyrium which is disintegrated in the process and fuses it into the body of the subject, and fire spells being constantly hit on the sarcophagus. The process takes hours and it is extremely painful.
The procedure to create a Red Wraiths requires Danarius' sarcophagus, a sword made out of red lyrium idol which is not destroyed in the process thanks to its self-regenerative properties, and the fire breath of a dragon. The process is faster, it may take minutes. We donât know if itâs painful.
The use of a sword made out of the red lyrium idol grants to its wielder strong healing powers. This comes from the lore recently incorporated in Tevinter Nights which suspects that the red lyrium idol can regenerate itself.
The red wraith [Shirallas] reinforces, again, the idea that the red lyrium is a symbol of rage and vengeance, and not by chance it was narrated through an elf wearing the vallaslin of Elgarânan, which tattoo design is a thorny vine.
By the end of the story, the Sarcophagus is deeply sunk into the ground, the red lyrium sword is sent to the Inquisition, and the red lyrium idol is being scried by Solas. We know he will take it eventually thanks to the book Tevinter Nights.
Eluvians are now surveillance camerasâŚ. really, can this be taken seriously?

Story
We see that Shirallas, the magister that promised him power, and Cedric Marquette reach the Castellum Tenebris owned now by the bastard son of Danarius.
They remove Danarius' son from the castle and plan to use the sarcophagus to imbue Shirallas with red lyrium, then arm him with a sword made out of the red lyrium idol. The goal to turn Shirallas into this living weapon is to repel the Qunari invasion and recover Tevinter's former glory.
Meanwhile, Danarius' son, without his castle, goes to a tavern to drink in frustration. The group intercepts him and forces him to speak about what the magister plans to do. He reveals the details after being tortured by Fenris, including a secret passage into the castle.
The city close to the castle [Neromenian] is also invaded by the Qunari who want to stop these magisters from creating these aberrant warriors. They try to force their entrance into the castle.
As the group infiltrates into the castle via the secret passage, they find a Dragon inside, which presence is justified later: its fire is part of the process of creating a red wraith.
We see the variant in the process of creating a perrepatae like Fenris when used red lyrium: it requires a sword made out of a fragment of the red lyrium idol, which will survive the procedure.
With the dragon breath, the process is instantaneous.
We see the process by which Shirallas finally gets his most desired power. But he remains under the command of the Magister, simply because he was broken as Fenris told him he was going to end up. Itâs worth noting that we have an aesthetic that relates rage, vengeful sense, Elgarânarâs symbology, and thorny vines in the figure of Shirallas. All these elements are related to the Red Lyrium, which naturally has an âangryâ energy, according to Coleâs words. Each of these elements is also potentially related to the codex Veilfire Runes in the Deep Roads found in the mural âThe Death of a Titanâ. It explains that something angry/red was hidden underground, unleashed because the Evanuris wanted more power, and vines tried to cage it for a while. I can see similar symbology in here, in Shirallas. I wonder if the Evanuris managed to do something like these magisters have been doing with red lyrium in order to reach divine power. If we think about it, Titans and Dragons both had the power to change reality. Dragons via the Fade, and Titans, apparently, through the reinforcement of reality by shaping The Stone, so Elvhenan had two sources of immense power to reach divinity: dragon blood and titan blood=lyrium.
Shirallas is now a red wraith, and we see his body has been marked with red lines that may or may not look like a vine. It does not have the symmetric and flawless shape that Fenrisâ tattoo has. Itâs a more chaotic version, following the untamed nature of the red lyrium.Â
Fenris wounds him deadly, but Shirallas heals immediately.Â
Marquette begins to panic and claims that the only way to stop the red wraithâs healing powers is to separate him from his weapon. After all, his sword was made out of a piece of the idol, which feeds from the red lyrium inside Shirallasâ body and, in consequence, heals him. Here is where we see that makes some sense the fact that the red lyrium idol self-regenerates: its powers can be transferred to a weapon. Knowing this, Ser Aaron Hawthorne sacrifices himself, separating Shirallas from the sword. This is probably the only action he feels it will ever matter in his life.
After this, Fenris can easily behead Shirallas.
I suppose the comic introduced to us the concept of Red Wraith that we may see in the future game. Itâs the only reason I see to have made the concept so central in the comics. The red wraith also reinforces again the idea that the red lyrium is about rage and vengeance, and not by chance was narrated through an elf with the vallaslin of Elgarânan, which tattoo design is a thorny vine. In contrast, we also see along the comic a human mage using thorny vines as her magic to kill and defend her people, as well as healing them.
Once the battle is over, they prepare Ser Aaron Hawthorneâs body for a proper bury in his origin city, and check what happened with the items that allowed the creation of the red wraith: the sarcophagus is deep into the ground thanks to Francesca, and the red lyrium sword will be sent to the Inquisition.
The red lyrium idol is in the hands of Danariusâ son, who wants to use it to guarantee his permanence in the Venatori. By the last panels of the comic, we know heâs being scryed by Solas... using an eluvian [?].
I found this a bit annoying too. Eluvians were used to travel long distances. Tevinters managed to use them for communication, meaning, that they could talk through them with another person who also had an eluvian. This one used by Solas works like a surveillance camera moving over the head of Danariusâ son, lol. Are eluvian allowed to have this scry property? Iâm not sure.
Comics are really wild when it comes to details in the lore and show up how much Gaider was needed to keep some lore consistency. Since he left Bioware, the products that have been appearing related to Dragon Age have a lot of weird, never hinted lore, that makes me fear the fate of the world of Thedas in the future games.
Relevant details:
Why the title? This story is focused on the Castellum Tenebris, Danariusâ castle that now is owned by his bastard son, where the first Red Wraith was created, hence the name of the comic.
Time: After defeating Corypheus and [maybe] after the DLC Tresspasser. I assume this because Varric is Viscount of Kirkwall.
Characters: We learn a bit more about Ser Aaron Hawthorne [the truth about his legend in Ostagar]:
He is haunted by his sense of uselessness when he was part of Loghainâs army that left the King Cailan in the middle of the battle against the darkspawn.Â
He had managed to reach Cailan with plenty of time, but it did not matter, since the ogre killed him in front of him, and since then, Ser Aaron Hawthorne has not been the same anymore, feeling that none of his actions truly mattered in the end. Thatâs why he ends up being so bold during the combat against the Red Wraith and sacrifices to finally make one of his actions matter.
Concepts: Â what can this comic provide in terms of lore?
We have an explanation, again, of the process that made warriors [Blue Wraiths] like Fenris:
It includes the sarcophagus, a sword made out of lyrium which disappears when it gets fused into the body of the subject, and a fire-based spell that should last hours. The process was slow and filled with excruciating pain.
In contrast, the process of creating a Red Wraith is faster, reduced to minutes, due to the use of red lyrium and dragonfire. It includes Danariusâ sarcophagus too, and a sword made out of the red lyrium idol.Â
Since the red lyrium idol seem to have healing properties in itself [information hinted in the book Tevinter Nights], it provides healing power to the red wraith as long as the wraith is in contact with the weapon.
By the end of the story, Marquette gives the idol to Danariusâ son who wants to impress the Venatori so he can be still part of them. The inconsistency with which DA lore treats the red lyrium idol, in a world that already knows that the red lyrium is terrible.... is astounding.
A curious detail: Marquette implies that the red lyrium has been rendered useless, emphasised by the drawing which shows it like a wooden carved piece, without red lyrium in it. I always claimed in my post Red Lyrium Idol that the figure looked like made out of wood and not of red lyrium. This makes me suspect that the red lyrium idol feeds on red lyrium, but it is not made out of it. How this affects the lore is impossible to know for me, since there is no detailed information about it.
The other element used for the development of red wraith is the sarcophagus which Francesca sunk into the ground via her vine-powers. They freed the dragon used in the creation of the red Wraith
Today weâre bittersweetly jumping into the second and third issues of Dragon Age: Dark Fortress. The end is here for this amazing comic-run, and weâve got plenty of lore to dissect as well as many tears to shed. If youâre not already caught up, Iâve broken down the first issue in a separate video, so you can check that out. If youâve already read the second and third issue for yourself, well, I guarantee you, Iâve spotted a few things youâve probably missed. So, letâs dive straight into the huge, juicy lore drops revealed in the final issues of Dark Fortress.
#1 - The Gangâs Arrival at Castellum Tenebris
Issue two opened with Ser Aaron, Vaea, Fenris, Marius, Tessa, Francesca and Autumnâs arrival at Castellum Tenebris - the âDark Fortressâ that is eponymous to this comic run - the gangâs intention has been to stop the Venatoriâs wicked ritual and seize their red lyrium artefacts and weapons. Considering the gang couldnât use the bridge without immediately being sighted or killed by Venatori, Vaea crossed the fortressâs bridge by parkouring underneath itâs structure and reaching the stronghold. She found Danariusâs hidden entrance and let the rest of the gang inside.
As they entered the fortress, they each prepared to face the Venatori, stopping their ritual to create a red wraith using the sarcophagus. Fenris explained the few things he remembered when he was imbued with lyrium tattoos through the sarcophagus, in preparation for what the Venatori might do with Shirallasâs transformation. He shared that a sword laced with lyrium was put into the device in order for it to work. Marius exclaimed that the magisters will be using a red lyrium imbued weapon this time around.
Fenris went on to say that, among other things, his ritual was bombarded with magic, he suspected that fire magic was used for his transformation. He suggested that the group should watch out for the red lyrium-imbued sword and any mages involved in the ritual - they could be the key to stopping it.
However, when the gang arrived at the ritualâs sanctum, they never expected to see an imprisoned dragon that would be used as a catalyst for Shirallasâs red wraith transformation. They each split up to focus on the Venatori and to free the dragon, when suddenly, even more chaos erupted from outside.
#2 â The Qunari Antaamâs Invasion
The Qunari Antaam laid waste to the eastern Tevinter city, Neromenian. Since the first issue, their focus has been on seizing Castellum Tenebris to stop a powerful, magical ritual and kill everyone in the fortress. Tractus Danarius, otherwise known as Danarius the Lesser was held captive by the Qun, until he recently escaped their grasp in the second issue.
The Qunari leader Karasten told his fellow Qunari that theyâre bringing the entirety of the Qunari Antaam down on Castellum Tenebris, and they werenât bluffing. The Antaam arrived with weapons of artillery blasting at the fortressâs gate as soldiers stormed the bridge. Their conquest had begun.
#3 - The Dragon & Red Wraith
Magister Neneleus, Professor Marquette and Shirallas prepared for their ritual as both the Qunari and our heroes invaded the fortress. Marquette examined the red lyrium-imbued sword that would be inserted into the sarcophagus for Shirallasâs transformation. This red lyrium sword was crafted from the infamous red lyrium idol, after the sword transforms Shirallas, its purpose will be to infuse him.
Marquette reminded Neneleus about the deal they made, Marquette is supposed to keep the red lyrium idol for studying purposes after this experiment is over.
As the Qunari laid siege, Nenealeus demanded that the ritual begin now. At that exact moment, the gang made their moves. Vaea and Fenris attempted to free the dragon, Ser Aaron targeted Marquette, Marius faced Nenealeus, and Francesca killed a few mages with her vine magic. Francesca then attempted to destroy the sarcophagus.
Nonetheless, in a sudden flash, the Qunari destroyed parts of the fortress, chaos emerged across the stronghold, and Shirallas slashed Francescaâs magical vine that was about to conceal the sarcophagus.
Shirallas then entered the sarcophagus as Marquette placed the red lyrium sword in place. The dragonâs shackles were broken by Fenris and Vaea with the intention of it fleeing the scene. Instead, Neneleus discovered that Danarius the Lesser bound the beast with magic, as he raised his sword and used magic, the dragon obeyed him and rained fire on the sarcophagus, setting the ritual in motion.
Upon the ritualâs completion, the Red Wraith was born.
#4 - Shirallas
Issue three opened up by revealing more of Shirallasâs backstory before he aligned himself with Magister Nenealeus and became the Red Wraith. His clan was burned to the ground and he remained the only survivor. At a young age, he was taken in by another clan and marked with Elgarânanâs vallaslin as he began his journey to adulthood. Shirallas joined up with Fenris on a quest to free elves from their bindings. On one mission to recover elven slaves destined for Magister Nenealeusâs estate, Shirallas switched places with one of the slaves as Nenealeus decided to take Shirallas in, and train him to become a Magekiller. Years since, Shirallas became a powerful perrepatae under Nenealeus and the remaining Venatori.
In the present day, Shirallas became the Red Wraith with a powerful red lyrium infused sword. Magister Nenealeus declared that with the Red Wraith and the dragon under his command, they were ready to lead the Venatori to victory. The Qunari would be the first to feel their wrath, and soon the rest of the world.
#5 - The Qunari Arrangement
The Qunari Antaam continued their assault on the front gates of Castellum Tenebris with the intention of killing everyone inside the fortress. However, Fenris and Vaea approached Karasten striking a deal with the Qunari. They agreed that the Qun could kill every single mage inside, except Francesca. With that arrangement, the Qunari Antaam joined forces with the gang and slaughtered many of the Venatori.
With the Qunâs help, Fenris focused on fighting the Red Wraith while Ser Aaron turned his attention to the dragon. Autumn landed a perfect attack on the Red Wraith as Fenris flanked his old friend with a chest-stab. While the Red Wraith was down, Francesca dropped a lit colosseum on top of him and used her vine magic to ensnare the Red Wraith and the dragon.
#6 - Marius vs. Magister Nenealeus
In an epic stand-off, Marius faced off against his mentor Magister Nenealeus. As Marius confronted him, the Red Wraith erupted from the rubble and returned to the fight. Nenealeus said that the Red Wraith can heal from any wound, he then offered Marius a choice - surrender and serve alongside the Venatori, or die.
Marius charged at Nenealeus and threw a trap targeting for hurting mages. Nenealeus laughed at his attempt and electrocuted Marius. While Marius was stunned, and Nenealeus was focused on killing Marius, Vaea jumped on the Magisterâs back and stabbed him with two daggers in his neck Killing him almost immediately, this was Vaeaâs first confirmed kill and it was absolutely worth it.
As soon as Nenealeus dropped to the floor, his dragon became confused no longer under his spell. Francesca released her vine-magic chains from the beast as it fled the scene, she used her magic on the sarcophagus, plunging the device deep into the earth. Thereâd only be one Red Wraith to deal with for now.
#7 - The Red Wraith & His Sword
With the discovery that the Red Wraith can heal from any wound, the gang prepared to face an impossible fight against him. Marquette offered advice against the Red Wraith, having felt the convictions of his experiment. He only wanted to see what the artifacts and weapons did, but he never meant to create a monster. He said that the key to stopping the Red Wraith lies within his sword - he feeds energy to the sword from the red lyrium in his veins, and in turn, the sword heals his wounds. Without that sword, he could be defeated.
Instantly, Ser Aaron knew what must be done. He charged at the Red Wraith, and fought vehemently against him, the Red Wraith stabbed Ser Aaron in the middle of his chest. As he did, Ser Aaron used his own sword and cut the Red Wraithâs hands off. With the red lyrium sword still in his gut, Ser Aaron fell backwards against the castle walls and fell to the depths of the fortress - separating the sword from the Red Wraith at the cost of his life.
The Red Wraith, unable to recover from his brutal wounds was in shock having had his hands cut off. Autumn; infuriated with the loss of Ser Aaron, bit the living crap out of the Red Wraithâs leg, he stumbled to the ground as Fenris slashed his head clean off. No longer was Shirallas a friend of Fenris, if he ever was.
#8 - The Gangâs Farewell
Marius and Tessa trekked ahead to find Ser Aaronâs body, they arrived below the fortress with Qunari soldiers waiting, they reminded them of their bargain - that the Qun were to keep the fortress for themselves and the gang had to leave immediately.
Marius and Tessa left the fortress on horseback as Vaea and Autumn comforted Ser Aaron one final time as he shared his final words. He was sorry that Vaea had to take a life and hopes that it will never be easy for her to do in the future. Ser Aaron had a letter in his pocket he wanted her to see, it was a letter for King Alistair requesting him to make Vaea a knight. She only had to give it to him, Ser Aaron was assured he would do it. He faded away as the group mourned the loss of a beloved friend.
Some time later, the gang discussed whatâs next. Francesca believed that the lyrium sarcophagus will never be found because of how deep it is beneath the earth. Fenris suggested that the sword should be taken to the Inquisition. Vaea said that she couldnât join them because she needed to take Ser Aaronâs body back to Portsmouth, so he can be buried with his family.
Fenris and Francesca insisted on joining Vaea with that endeavour. She was his family after all. Vaea and Francesca rode Casse, Ser Aaronâs house, as Fenris and Autumn followed just behind them. As they set off to Portsmouth, Vaea retold the story of how Ser Aaron came to ride Casse in the first place.
Marius and Tessa took a break from riding as they recalled their adventure with the gang. Obliviously or not, the two were standing in front of an eluvian as a familiar figure watched and listened through his own eluvian in an undisclosed location.
#9 - The Red Lyrium Idol & Solas
After Marquette told the gang how to defeat the Red Wraith, he fled the scene with one of their horses. Somewhere outside of Tenebris, Danarius the Lesser found and taunted Marquette with magic and asked him for the red lyrium idol. Marquette suggested that it belonged in a museum, but after Danarius intimidated him, he handed it over and said that he doesnât think it does anything anymore. Danarius didnât care about its power, he just wanted it to impress the Venatori.
After retrieving the idol, Danarius was also being watched through an eluvan by the Dread Wolf himself, no doubt, looking for his idol.
Given that Dark Fortress is pre-Tevinter Nights, perhaps Danarius the Lesser is the exact mage from House Danarius in âThe Dread Wolf Take Youâ short story, the very mage who took the red lyrium idol to the Mortalitasi in Nevarra for a ritual to stop the Qunariâs invasion. Given Danariusâs reasoning for acquiring the idol, Stopping the Qunari would certainly impress the Venatori.
In any event, the red lyrium idol has seemingly not been acquired by Solas yet, however, heâs on the hunt and catching up to retrieving it at any point given his eluvian network and pool of spies. It seems like itâs only a matter of timeâŚ
Dark Fortress superbly ended on a face reveal of Solas with the caption: ânever the end.â Perhaps, this is a tease for a future comic series, or simply for the next game when we come face to face with Solas. I hope for a mix of both because I have loved Nunzioâs, Chrisitnaâs and everyone whoâs worked incredibly hard at Dark Horse on this comic run, and Iâd love to see more comics from them in the future. I really hope BioWare gives them more comics to craft, theyâve been nothing but remarkable.
But if this is the end, then so be it. Iâve loved every second of these comics, especially Dark Fortress with the amount of payoff thatâs been delivered to each character. And yes, of course, the Solas reveal does make it all a little bit more exciting, but for me, the juicy lore drops thatâs been added, the tie-ins to Tevinter Nights and the epic character journeys have made the entire comic-run since Knight Errant top-notch, and full-circle.
If nothing else, thereâs got to be a Vaea and Autumn cameo in the next Dragon Age, they both deserve it! Anyhow, for any potential future comics, or news on the upcoming Dragon Age, youâre already in the right place.

[Commissioned by @crazytrain48â. Unlike most Arduin monsters, where I have multiple versions and multiple editions to compare and contrast from, I only can find stats for the red wraith in The Compleat Arduin edition from the early 90s. If this is a genuine David Hargrave creation, it must have appeared in one of the Arduin adventures. In the source material, it can cast spells of up to the 20th Order, and spells go up to Order 25. So I figured 15th level spellcasting was a decent Pathfinder substitute. The original is unclear over whether itâs supposed to be incorporeal or not--itâs called a wraith and can go ethereal at will. I made mine incorporeal as default, and gave it the ability to take friends along with it.]
Red Wraith
CR 16 NE Undead
This rotting undead being appears as a translucent skeleton with red flames for eyes. Instead of arms, tentacles of liquid darkness lash from its shoulders.
When a powerful humanoid servitor of annihilation dies, they may be restored to unlife as a red wraith. Red wraiths can rise from the minions of many evil gods and powers, but all are united by their ultimate goal of destroying the cosmos and the divine order. Daemon or qlippoth cults, nihilistic religions such as Zyphus or Groetus, or mad scholars of the Dominion can all spawn a red wraith from their ranks. In fact, red wraiths often view each other as competition, splitting hairs over the exact natures of the apocalypses they desire and hunting each other down for destruction.
Red wraiths are sometimes referred to as âlash lichesâ, referring to their most prominent feature. These incorporeal tendrils can drain life and deliver potent touch spells, and a victim of a red wraith may rise as a wraith to serve it forever. If a red wraith is in a position of power, it will keep its dying foes alive for extended periods in order to drain their lives by hand and create more slaves. They are puissant spellcasters, able to switch at will between arcane and divine spells, but favoring those that bolster their armies and rain destruction on their foes.
Red wraiths are often surrounded by large armies of undead, and they can communicate with spies, saboteurs and other agents over long distances through telepathy. They typically keep multiple desecrated shrines within their lairs, to grant them and their undead the defensive benefits. A red wraith typically has multiple plots to hasten the end, and traffics with fiends, nightshades and other horrors to accomplish these goals. Good aligned weapons can injure a red wraith as if it were flesh and bone, and so red wraiths often seek to steal, destroy or curse artifacts of good.
