I thought red 40 wasn't vegan..?
Red dye #4 comes from crushed beetles, so it’s definitely not vegan.
Red dye #40 is petroleum-based.
Maybe that’s the confusion :)
to-be-lost replied to your post: “I thought the glaze on skittles was made from insects? Or their shell?”:
Some people are picky about where food dye is sourced. Many people claim that red food dye comes from insects. I personally don't know however I've heard people bring it up many times.

Tasting - RED 4 Vina Robles
Name: RED 4 Vina Robles Variety: 61% Syrah, 25% Petite Sirah, 7% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre Region: Paso Robles, California Country: USA Year: 2010 Price: $17
Winery Review: Steve Heimoff:
There’s a robust heartiness to this Rhône-style blend that makes it perfect for drinking on cold nights with spicy barbecue or stew. Mainly Syrah and Petite Sirah, it’s rich in blackberry, bacon and black pepper flavors. Bone dry and moderate in alcohol, it represents great quality for the price, and it should be relatively easy to find, with nearly 12,000 cases produced.
My Review: Purple red color. Blackberry and spicy aroma indicative of most Syrahs. I didn't quite taste the bacon initially, but after my third sip, I definitely noted a subtle bacon flavor. I've never tasted this in a wine before, so I am intrigued. I mean... Who doesn't like bacon?! I would try this wine again and hopefully with food next time.
