Page from my personal journal: a review of Soho record store Reckless Records, from my trip to London, August 1995.
Writing about Reckless Records back in January, I was a bit kinder in my assessment than captured in this 1995. I think it’s partly due to my being underwhelmed by the Soho branch of Reckless (the one reviewed here) as compared to their Islington location, where I’d made out much better. But I also think the store in its present-day form (yes, it’s still around) has a better selection than I found in 1995. Maybe because the Islington branch closed quite some time ago, consolidating everything at their Soho spot?
Anyway, check out my cranky, young adult vibes:
Reckless (Berwick)
Limited indie in this branch (lots of hip-hop + dance, tho), all mixed together w/other kinds of rock LPs, too, almost alone among London stores in doing this. Slim pickings. 7″es are better, though fab sections (F. Nun [Flying Nun], Subway, 53rd + 3rd) were empty, empty, empty. Took home 2 copies of Tsunami “Sometimes...” 7″ for 99p ea. Check condition of vinyl! I almost bought two non-bargain priced 7″es that were a bit beat. Also has (better) Islington branch.
