I may regret asking this of the medieval scholar, as it is one of my favourite examples of how a dedication to *versimilitude* over 'realism' can take you to wonderful places, but... thoughts on A Knight's Tale (2001)?
Oh no, you won't regret it. I unironically adore this movie and should in fact rewatch it. More medieval films should be like it; as you say, it's not trying in any sense of the word to evoke a painstaking (and inaccurate anyway) aura of Gritty Grey Medieval Realism. It actually has COLOR (zomgz) and jokes and Paul Bettany as Chaucer, who is of course the best. It evokes the sporting-event-spectacle of a tournament with "We Are The Champions"; none of Shannyn Sossamon's costumes make any sense; Heath Ledger is at his rumpled blond peasant-boy peak; Rufus Sewell both smolders and slimes; it is in general an absolutely perfect piece of medieval media. 10/10.

Like, even IF we ignore Hagakure's whole situation, just about every single one of the girls is wearing something with SO little coverage - look at Momo's! IT DOESN'T EVEN WORK WITH HER QUIRK DAMMIT, LOOK UP WHERE FAT DEPOSITS ON WOMEN ARE! Ururaka even SAYS her costume isn't what she asked for iirc, who MAKES these decisions and why weren't they consulting with the kids AND various other specialists? You want (tbc)

PROTECTION, UTILITY, AND KEEPING _FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLDS FROM BEING SEXUALISED_ LONG BEFORE YOU WANT FUCKING MARKETABILITY! Aoyama gets a support item right from word go so he doesn't shoot his internal organs out through his laser, but Kaminari doesn't get a support item so he idk... doesn't give himself brain damage?! She isn't given like, high-calorie snacks in her utility belt to keep her going, she isn't given any protection WHATSOEVER that she could open parts of to Create, she isn't given open spots where a woman's body stores fat, she instead is given a leotard that barely covers her and places with virtually NO fat left uncovered 'for her quirk'! teenagers have ENOUGH body image issues, and teenagers going into a highly public industry I can only IMAGINE, but seriously, if ANYONE in UA should be advised to be going on a high-calorie diet, it's Momo 'literally uses fat for her quirk, also apparently eats so little she was headhunted for modelling for her internship' Yaoyorozu. And she's just ONE example from UA of how the costumes are neither functional nor protective nor appropriate for fifteen-year-olds in the public eye! (tbc)
Like I said, just about all the girls are wearing something with too little coverage for either combat or cameras - if they want to dress like Midnight later, when they've got more experience with what the hero paparazzi and tabloids will do with that, more power to 'em, but these are FIRST-YEAR-STUDENTS - for that matter, did MIDNIGHT get a real choice in this? Or did she get FORCED into the role of '18+ hero' as a kid who WASN'T EVEN 18 YET and had to live with the costume section's bs (tbc)

And have we seen those big boots and wrist things have ANY function? Or did the costume department's thoughts go '0g = vague astronaut theming, girl = pink + high heels, job done!'? tbc
Even when deployed to a frickin' WAR ZONE, virtually none of them get support items to either cover for weaknesses or build on strengths. Nothing to protect them if they take a hit, nothing to let them escape if they're in a situation their quirk isn't useful, nothing to boost their mobility if their quirk doesn't do that, or let them hit harder if their quirk isn't suitable, NOTHING. So you've got over-sexualised minors going into combat situations with inappropriate clothing and NO USEFUL GEAR
It just drives my little anxiety-driven plan-for-everything mind insane. I've had LEVEL ONE ROLEPLAYING CHARACTERS that were better prepared than UA and the HPSC seems to think their heroes and heroes-in-training need to be!
yeah thereās a reason i had Nemuriās homeroom teacher say unequivocally why her costume was a bad idea in the age swap au. it certainly is protrayed as her own choice but that doesnāt mean anything when a *fifteen year old* is trying to market herself as an *18+ fantasy icon* what the heck...Ā my thoughts can mostly be summed up in this:

If you put on the domanatrix stunt for a kid- say that one in the alleyway wasnāt going to stab you- they are not capable of giving consent nor should you be asking. but its not just her costume, its... all of them. Momoās is bad, and she mentioned that the design she submitted showed more skin- iām confident the one she gave was more like her protoype one, where her sides and back werenāt as constricted with fabric, instead of just relying on that horrid cleavege dip. Ochako literally tells us she didnāt want her costume as tight as is it, but she never gets to go in to fix it! She eventually decides to get grappling hooks *after* izuku inspires her with bw, why didnāt the SF inspire her to get some sort of jet pack??? Why didnāt Kaminari at least have chargers to recover from going braindead faster in his costume?????

Not actually a rarepair, but a rare PLOT. There was a movie I watched a few years ago that I thought fandom would go NUTS over, and assumed that one of the most popular 'two cakes!' plots in the fandom would be exploring the implications of a certain thing. Went to ao3 - less than fifty fics TOTAL, and only ONE of them, seemingly abandoned, that does anything with that potential plot hook.

I read part of your Naruto Don't Gender Good stuff on another blog, and even though I don't even GO here, never watched an ep of Naruto before, I HAD to come and read the whole tag! And as someone who is very fuzzy about their own gender, the idea that I could just put a hood up and be they/them, then put it down and be he/him is AMAZING. It really got me good, and I love it SO MUCH. Also Naruto the accidental savage is GOLD, even though I only know the verse through osmosis!

Hey uh, so Biggs and Luke are such good friends that they ABSOLUTELY spent time at each other's places growing up. In canon there was no time for Biggs to really PROCESS that Luke's aunt and uncle were killed before he was shot down. In DAV he only had a near-miss like Wedge did, so - did Luke get a chance to say farewell to the people who raised him to be the person he is, all the family he ever knew before leaving Tatooine, with someone from his culture and who knew them standing beside him?
Yeah, I think Luke and Biggs did keep vigil for Owen and Beru together after the Battle of Yavin.
Iām not sure if Iāll ever write that scene specifically, but it is definitely part of the background in my head for this āverse.
I also think that Luke and Biggs talked a fair bit about that weird old wizard Ben Kenobi who turned out to be a Jedi, and Biggs may be one of the few people in the ESB era Rebellion who knows that Luke is a potential Jedi himself.

Apparently the term for people in a queerplatonic relationship (building their lives around each other but in a platonic way) is āzucchiniā. As in, instead of being your ā[gender]friendā or 'partnerā or whatever, theyāre your zucchini. Itās deliberately absurd, but a common shortening if you donāt want to explain it is theyāre your 'zuccā (said with the long 'uā in zucchini). Try googling 'queerplatonic zucchiniā and seeing what you get
Iām well aware of some of the terms people use, Iāve been active in the online aro community since like 2013 and saw some of these terms emerge. I know what a queerplatonic relationship is and I know that some people use that as an affectionate term for their queerplatonic partner
However -- I donāt like it, and it doesnāt solve any of the problems I need addressed. Just because a tiny corner of the internet has decided on something in theory doesnāt mean thereās actually a societal framework for doing it, and that I wonāt be hounded with questions if I try to construct it that way, or that itās in any way a one-size-fits-all solution for people trying to build futures that involve platonic partners.Ā
The termĀ āzucchiniā feels childish and infantilizing to me and not something that expresses genuine commitment, so it fulfills none of what I want from relationship vocabulary. It just further emphasizes my engrained belief that no relationships I have will be serious and involve real commitment. And itās even less likely to be taken seriously by people who havenāt been involved in a tiny corner of the internet that doesnāt even agree on the term in the first place.Ā
I donāt want to be an aromantic person with a relationship/partner/etc that I can only talk about in certain small, online aro circles -- I want to be able to talk to other adults, offline, no matter how they identify, about the people in my life who are important to me and have it understood and taken seriously. I want to have a word I can use when the doctor Iām seeing asks me the relationship to me of the person who came along to my appointment. I want to have a word I can use that wonāt prompt further questions when that person is involved in another serious relationship as well. I want a word that gets across that I have other friends who are similarly important to me and if given the chance I would construct my life around them too in a heartbeat -- not instead of, but alongside. But āpartnerā is the only thing we have that will be remotely taken seriously by healthcare professionals, and real estate agents, and other people I will have to interact with to construct my adult life, and it has such strong connotations of exclusivity that it still doesnāt seem like it fulfills what I need.
There is no existing terminology for what many aromantic people (or alloromantic, but very committed to their platonic partners, because people like that exist too! If romance and platonic affection are placed on the same level, the way they should be, itās not out of the question for an alloromantic person to have or prefer a platonic partner too. And it shouldnāt be) want or need, and very little precedent or framework for making what we want out of our lives work. Thatās why I called it almost akin to violence -- society is structured in such a way that people can struggle to construct lives around fulfilling relationships that could be integral to them having happy, healthy lives. No word made up on an isolated corner of the internet is going to erase the fact that we have to work outside of a rigid framework that punishes deviance from the norm. Especially not one that feels that frivolous. And even if we had a better word, I guarantee it still wouldnāt work for everyone -- people and relationships are immensely complicated, and we need a lot of vocabulary if we want to describe everyoneās experiences that we just donāt have, along with a complete restructuring of societal expectations for whatĀ āpartnershipsā look like.
