34- Do they have any pets? :D
Not right now. Holly initially came with a cat, though. They were apackaged deal. But Gail soon got past it as their connection grew stronger.
Lucy had been the friendly felineās name (or Lucifer, as Gail liked to call her), and she was beautiful, her coat fine and the purest of white. Crystal blue eyes that hardly seemed real could be coaxed into appearing violet under the right lighting. Sadly, six months into Gail and Hollyās second (or was it third?)attempt at a relationship, Lucy was hit by a car and she passed away.
It was early one summer evening, and a happy and content Gail was on her way over to her girlfriends house for dinner. Sheād been enjoying the sun on what otherwise had been an overcast day when she came upon Lucyās small, lifeless body. Her white tail, which was poking out from underneath some cardboard covering, had caught her eye after she round the corner of the quiet street and approached Hollyās front gate. A passerby had been nice enough to move Lucyās body from the road to the edge of the sidewalk, covering her body to shield it from the elements.
After the initial shock of what she was seeing wore off, Gail hadnātfreaked out or rushed inside to fetch the beloved petās owner. Instead, she hadremained calm, and scooped Lucy up into her arms, cradling her with a gentleness that was rarely seen by anyone close to Gail. With tears in her eyes, sheād carried Lucy up the short footpath to Hollyās front door and rung the doorbell, choosing not to waltz in like she usually wouldāve done.
Later that night, as Gail consoled her girlfriend on the couch, Holly, fightingback her tears and not wanting to be alone, had asked Gail to move in with her.Gail agreed without a second thought, and the next day, after burying Lucyāsbody in the small garden out back, they hired a moving van and collected Gailāsbelongings and brought them back to her new home that she would now share with the love of her life.
Six months later, and Holly is not sure if her heart is ready for another pet. Lucy had always been there for her, supporting her all throughout med school, residency, two serious breakups, and one crippling bout of appendicitis. Either way, she already has her hands pretty full with another, much larger cat who she loves deeply, and who happens to come in the sexy form of one snarky, blondepolice officer.
Even though Gail is more of a dog person (her track record with cats isnot great, just ask Steve), sheās not totally against the idea of getting a cat, but just as long as she gets to name him/her when the time comes, and on the proviso that Holly has no veto power of her chosen name. Truth be told, she kind of likes the idea of having a Gail Junior or Cheese puff around to play with.
In the meantime, as a surprise, Gail orders herself and Hollyeach a Dino Pet. And in a weird turn of events, Gail turns out to be the nerdy one who obsesses over her living, bioluminescent dinoās welfare. Holly, however, gives hers far less attention, which is why when her dino lives three weeks and Gailās only three days, her girlfriend vows that a pet is not in her future. (Though Holly knows she really doesnāt mean it.)
āHow about a child?ā Holly asks. āI think weāre ready to be momās.ā
