Recently Completed: Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders (PC)

This is a first-person shooter that answers the question: "What if Doom, but with wizards??" The story is barebones -- something about a bad dude named D'sparil who's bringing horrors into your plane of existence. But! Unlike Doom, the levels tend to have a more pleasing architectural consistency and symmetry. Castles, villages, temples, that sort of thing, rather than just twisty hell-labyrinths.

It's pretty great. The magic weapons are fun, the game doesn't rely too heavily on nasty traps, and some of the later episodes up the challenge level considerably. It also iterates on Doom by adding an inventory system and areas with wind, or flowing water that will push you around.

I have good memories of playing this as a kid and I'm not sure the last time I've run through it. Check it out!

So, most recent biggie is my 2017 temp scarf, and here’s a collage of completed coasters mailed to my sis, and then my mom felt neglected so I hooked some card coasters for her Thursday games.

Recently Completed - Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (PC)

This is a third-person action-adventure game in which an unlikely duo must race to stop a madman from inciting civil war. To do this, the pair needs to find a legendary treasure before the madman does. There will be Exploring, and Shooting, and Solving Puzzles, and sometimes Driving to accomplish this!

Recently Completed: Manifold Garden (PC)

This is a first-person puzzle game set in a mysterious, infinitely looping realm. It owes a lot to Portal in that the basic gameplay mostly involves doing weird physics stuff to get cubes onto buttons.

Recently Completed - Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery (Xbox Series X)

This is a trilogy of first-person mysteries starring the world's second-greatest mystery solver, Frog Detective! Can you find out what's going on on The Haunted Island? Can you crack the Case of the Invisible Wizard? Can you avoid the snares of Corruption at Cowboy County?

Recently Completed: Immortality (Xbox Series X)

This is an interactive trilogy of movies starring a fictional lady named Marissa Marcel. It seems that each of her three movies were never released, and that she herself has vanished. Starting with just a handful of short clips, the player unlocks more footage by clicking on key objects or people in each scene. The system then kind of searches for a matching object / person in another scene and shows you that. (They call it a Match Cut but I believe they're using the term pretty loosely). And so it goes.

There's not a lot of mechanics to learn or complicated controls to master. What kept me going was the intrigue of piecing together the films first and foremost, and then discovering the metaplot lurking behind and around the scenes of the films. The footage in each clip often extends past the featured movie scene, and it's fun and sometimes very telling to see the actors when their masks aren't on. There are answers to the central mysteries of the game, but along the way it also presents more fascinating questions to explore and some which do not have simple answers at all. I'd say more, but some discoveries are better made by yourself.

I will say that near the end of the game I had a common issue, which is that I was seriously floundering for new clips and more or less revisiting scenes to randomly Match Cut on anything I could find. From what I understand, the system is designed to only give certain clips at certain times, and it's mildly frustrating to have a face you've clicked twenty times suddenly lead to something new because you met a hidden condition elsewhere. I was never stuck for too long, but the pacing of discoveries does falter a bit in the late game. Maybe it's only frustrating because you feel as though you understand most of the story and just want to wrap things up.

I did really enjoy the Memento-like sensation of feeling you know something and then having a later discovery turn your earlier knowledge on its head. Revisiting some of the earliest clips with new context and knowledge gained later is interesting in its own way, and the game is wonderfully acted across the board. If someone seems stiff and unconvincing in their role, there's almost always a reason for it. I did finish the game with a lot of clips left unfound, but this is the kind of thing that's very easy to fill on YouTube afterward.
