hey, idk if missy from colette really is a trans man! missy could be a nb lesbian, there are many butches who use he/him pronouns. i didnt do any research but from what ive seen on wikipedia theres nothing saying he identified as a man. do you guys talk more in depth about the real missy in any of your podcasts?
Thanks for your message!
When we saw Colette we interpreted Missy as being a trans man. The two trans actors who worked on the film - including Jake Graf, who provided some advice to Denise Gough on her interpretation of the character - both interpret Missy as being a trans man, and so that also informed our discussion as we considered their casting.
Within the confines of the film, however, reading Missy as a non-binary lesbian is also valid, especially as he lived in a time before the lines between the two identities existed as they are drawn now.
I’d also like to mention - because I don’t think I was clear in my post yesterday - that when I referred to Missy as a trans man, I was referring only to the character in the film, and not the historical individual. We haven’t looked into the real Missy on our podcast yet, so I can’t comment on them from that perspective, but it would definitely be interesting to read Missy’s own words and discuss them more in the future.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and have a great day!
