may I add the prompt where KOL!Gold turns up with flowers to thank Belle for having taken care of him, and sees her with Will and thinks he's her boyfriend ?
See, I told you the current angst was your fault :) I tweaked it slightly, but what the heyâŠ
Gold was halfway towards the Cadillac before he decided that he wasnât in the frame of mind to drive. Â He turned on his heel, striding off towards the town at a pace that he knew was going to cause him a lot of pain by the time he lay down to sleep that night. Â He found that he didnât much care; the pain in his leg would distract from the hollow feeling in his chest, the space where his heart had trying to make itself known again after so many years of wasting away.
He strode along, head down, lost in bitter self-loathing, and his subconscious whispered soothingly that it was only to be expected. Â Opening his heart had only ever led to loss. Â He had been a fool to think otherwise. Â He had been a fool to hope.
âHey!â she said, a little breathlessly. Â âHell of a day, huh? Â You wanna buy me a drink?â
âHere,â said Gold, shoving the flowers at her. Â Dorothy took them, brow crinkling in puzzlement.
âWhat are these for?â
âFlowers,â he said impatiently. Â âStick them in a vase or something. Â Or take them home, I donât care.â
âOkay, itâs just - why are you giving them to me?â
âMaybe Iâm grateful for all the good work youâve done at the hospital since you got here,â he said shortly, and she gave him a look.
âI know you are,â she said. Â âI also know that youâre a thoughtful sort of guy, and I very much doubt you bought these flowers for your favourite lesbian when you know in your heart sheâd prefer a decent bottle of vodka.â
âDo you want the flowers or not?â he snapped.
Dorothy put her hands on her hips, the plastic wrapper crinkling around the bouquet.
âOh, Iâll take âem,â she said. Â âIf you tell me who they were really meant for. Â And if the answer is anything other than sweet little Belle French who youâre very clearly totally in love with, youâre an idiot. Â Come to think of it, youâre an idiot anyway for giving these to me when you should be presenting them to her on bended knee while you apologise for being an asshat and ask her out for dinner.â
âI donâtââ
âFollowed by lots of sex, future marriage and babies,â she added.
âDonât be ridiculous,â he said repressively.
âWhich bit?â Â She grinned at him. Â âThe part about you being an idiot or the part about you being in love with Belle? Â Did I lose you at the marriage and babies part?â
âI did apologise!â he snapped. Â âI took your advice. Â And Jeffersonâs, for all the good it did.â
âYouâre not seriously telling me she told you to shove it?â
âOf course notâŠâ  He took a sip of his drink.  âShe accepted my apology, said we were friends.  She was very gracious about it.â
âWell then,â she said. Â âNow you can move on to the next step, right? Â Ask her out. Â Tell her youâre totally in love with her and you want to see her naked.â
âFor fuckâs sakeââ
âYou can offer to let her see you naked as a sweetener,â she added.
âIâm not in love with Belle!â he insisted, ignoring both the comments on nudity and the fact that he was almost certainly lying. Â âAnd - and even if I was, it wouldnât make any difference. Â Sheâs seeing someone.â
Dorothyâs eyebrows shot up.
âSince when?â
âSince he turned up outside the hospital and swept her off her feet,â he said, his tone impatient.
âReally?â Â Dorothy gave him a flat look. Â âWho is this lothario?â
âI donât know,â he muttered. Â âShort hair. Â Her age. Â Zelena says theyâre together.â
âYou believed something Zelena said?â
âWellâŠâ  He frowned at that.  âI donât think she was lying.  They were all over each other.â
âIn what way?â
âIn the hugging and kissing way, what do you think?â he said shortly.
âHmm.â Â Dorothy took a slurp of her drink. Â âTongue?â
âI wasnât exactly gonna walk over there and check,â he snapped.
âSo they could just be friends.â
âFriends that like to kiss each other,â he grumbled.
âI kiss my friends.â Â She leaned in and pressed a warm kiss to his cheek, leaving the scent of flowers in his nose. Â âSee? Â And trust me, I really donât want to sleep with you.â
Gold had to grin at that.
âYour loss,â he quipped.
âThatâs the spirit.â Â She clinked her glass against his, winking.
âYou guys started without me!â
Jeffersonâs injured tone made them both look around, and he shrugged out of his coat, stamping snow from his boots. Â He was carrying a large padded envelope under his arm, and he shoved it onto the bar, brushing snowflakes from his dark hair.
âWhatâll it be?â asked Dorothy. Â âGoldâs drowning his sorrows, and weâre all pitching in.â
Jeffersonâs mouth fell open.
âShe said no?â
âShe didnât say anything,â said Gold, in a wry tone. Â âI never got the chance to ask.â
âShe was talking to some guy,â put in Dorothy. Â âAnd this moron here assumes theyâre bumping uglies three times a night, without actually asking her about it. Â Hence the drowning of the sorrows.â
âIâm not drowning my sorrows,â muttered Gold.
âSure youâre not,â she said, with a sniff. Â âYouâre pretty much crying into your whisky thinking she might have the hots for someone else, but you absolutely have no feelings for her whatsoever, nope.â
âI didnât say I had no feelings for her,â he said. Â âI - I just meant that it doesnât matter.â
âI never heard of her having a boyfriend,â said Jefferson. Â âWhere the hell did this come from?â
âI bloody well saw them, thatâs what!â snapped Gold. Â âDo you people think I just go around creating painful scenarios in my head for fun?â
âYes,â they said, in unison, and he scowled, turning back to his whisky.
âLook,â said Jefferson patiently. Â âIâm willing to bet sheâs not seeing this mystery guy. Â If she was, why wouldnât she mention it?â
Gold didnât have an answer for that, and Jefferson rolled his eyes.
âShe was staying at your house for days,â he added. Â âDid she mention a boyfriend to you then? Â Or call him? Â Even once?â
She didnât. Â She didnât call anyone except her father.
âHe was abroad,â he said. Â âJust got back in the country.â
âBut did she mention him?â
Gold was silent, and Dorothy sighed.
âYou need to say something to her,â she said. Â âForget about this not-boyfriend, and just tell her how you feel. Â Lifeâs crappy enough without ignoring the few opportunities for love that come along.â
âIâm notââ
Dorothy slammed down her glass and grabbed at the napkin holder, waving it at him threateningly.
âI swear by all thatâs holy if you tell me youâre not in love one more time, I will take this napkin holder and shove it up your oblivious ass!â she snapped. âWith no lube!â
Gold burst out laughing, followed by Jefferson, and after a moment she joined in, putting down her weapon of choice.
âIâm serious,â she said, when they had stopped chuckling. Â âYou like her. Â She likes youââ
âShe likes everyone,â said Gold wearily. Â âThatâs who she is.â
âWhat did I say about the napkin holder, hmm?â
Gold sighed, slumping a little on the bar, and Dorothy turned to Jefferson, fishing a twenty-dollar bill from her pocket.
âGet yourself a drink,â she said. Â âAnd get him another one. Â Iâm gonna go see what I can find out about this alleged boyfriend.â
âYou donât even know where theyâll be,â grumbled Gold, feeling like a moody teenager and hating himself for it.
âWell, theyâre not here,â said Dorothy patiently. Â âSo theyâre obviously at the Rabbit Hole, right?â
âOr back at her place, picking up where they left off,â said Jefferson helpfully, and Dorothy smacked his shoulder.
âNot. Â Helping.â
âLook,â sighed Gold, sitting up. Â âI appreciate you two trying to cheer me up, but this is ridiculous. Â Leave Belle to have some time with her - well, whatever he is. Â Just bloody well have a drink with me, would you?â
âJefferson can be you drinking buddy for the next twenty minutes,â said Dorothy. Â âIâll be back. Â Mineâs a vodka tonic. Â Keep my seat warm, okay?â
With that she was gone, and Jefferson slid into her seat, beaming at Gold.
âSo,â he said. Â âWhat are we drinking?â
x
Belle took a slurp of her drink, setting it back on the table and grinning at Will. Â He was very tanned, his hair shorter than ever. Â A little thinner than he had been when she last saw him, but he looked happy, which was all she cared about.
âYouâre looking well,â he said, echoing her thoughts. Â âSmall town life must agree with you.â
âIt - has its moments,â she admitted. Â âWhat about you? Â Still teaching?â
âYeah, Iâm loving it,â he said enthusiastically. Â âGoing back in the New Year. Thereâs a great little community of us now, and the local people are so welcoming. Â You should come out and visit sometime.â
Belle sighed.
âGod, Iâd love to,â she said reluctantly. Â âNo bloody chance at the moment. Â Iâm trying to save up for a place of my own.â
He made a noise that suggested he knew exactly how it was to need more cash, and picked up his glass.
âCome on then, Belle,â he said. Â âDrink up, weâre celebrating.â
Belle shot him a wry glance, and clinked her glass against his before taking a drink.
âThere,â she said. Â âNow dâyou want to tell me what weâre celebrating? Â I mean other than you turning up out of the blue right before Christmas after youâve been radio silent for months? Â I know you, you have something to tell me. Right?â
He sent her a lopsided grin, which made her even more convinced he had something to tell her.
âYeah, sorry about being a crappy penpal,â he said. Â âLife kind of got in the way. Â I can only stay tonight, as well. Â Got a bus to catch in the morning.â
âWell, Iâd offer you a bed, but you know how Dad is,â said Belle, with a roll of her eyes. Â âWe never did set up the guest bedroom, and itâs full of all his fishing crap.â
âNo need, I got a room at that bed and breakfast,â he said, taking a slurp of his beer. Â âFlew into New York yesterday, and figured Iâd stop by on the way to Toronto, see how you were doing.â
âAnd?â she teased, and he grinned.
âNothing gets past you, does it?â he remarked, his eyes glinting. Â âOkay, I wanted you to be the first to know. Â Iâve - Iâve met someone. Â The one. Â The love of my life.â
Belleâs eyes widened, and she almost bounced in her seat.
âThatâs wonderful!â she said. Â âIs this the reason for the trip to Toronto?â
He nodded, looking almost shy as he turned his glass between his fingers.
âSheâs asked me home to meet the family,â he said. Â âHer nameâs Anastasia. Â Ana. Â Sheâs - God, Belle, sheâs everything!â
Belle couldnât seem to stop smiling. Â She reached out to hug him, squeezing him tightly, and Will squeezed back.
âIâm so happy for you,â she said, her voice muffled a little by his scarf. Â âI canât wait to meet her.â
âWell, thatâs partly the reason for my visit,â he said. Â âI - uh - I asked her to marry me. Â Wondered if youâd come to the wedding. Â Itâll be in Toronto, so not far to travel.â
Belle sat back with a squeal of delight, clapping her hands.
âOh my God! Â Of course!â she said. Â âWhenâs the wedding?â
âHopefully next September,â he said. Â âWe havenât told her family yet. Â Belle, I was such a bloody idiot when I asked her, I didnât even have a ring! Â We were walking along the beach at midnight the day before she flew home, and the stars were out, and it was perfect, and I just kind of blurted it out. Â Luckily she said yes.â
âLucky for you indeed,â said Belle, amused. Â âSo when are you getting a ring?â
âOh, I got one,â he said hastily. Â âSheâd been saying how pretty it was, so I hope sheâll like it. Â Here, let me show you. Â You can give me a womanâs opinion.â
He reached into the inside pocket of his coat, bringing out a little box, and opened it up to reveal a white gold ring set with a ruby and diamond cluster. Â Belle took the box, looking it over and smiling with delight as the light sparkled on the cut stones.
âItâs beautiful,â she said warmly. Â âIâm sure sheâll love it. Â Iâm so happy for you, I truly am. Â And I canât wait to meet your bride-to-be.â
He smiled, his eyes gong soft, a far-away look in them. Â A look of contentment, of happiness. Â He had found the love of his life, and was loved in return. Â She found that she envied him.

Dorothy shoved her hands in her pockets, tucking her chin into her scarf as she hurried along the street. Â The Rabbit Hole wasnât far, and she soon ducked in through the doorway with a sigh of relief, warmth flooding over her. Â She didnât bother taking off her coat; if Belle was there, it wouldnât take her long to get the information she was after.
She spied Belle almost immediately, seated at a table in the corner with a young man sitting across from her. Â The young man had soulful eyes and a ready smile, with close-cropped hair. Â They were talking, their heads close together, but Dorothy couldnât hear a thing over the sound of the music in the bar. Â They seemed to get along very well, but she couldnât see that the two of them were exhibiting any signs of being a couple. Â Just two friends having a drink, as far as she could tell. Â She was about to wander over to say hi, when Belle reached over to hug the man. Â He hugged her back, eyes closed and a wide grin on his face, then sat back and said something. Â Belle let out a squeal and clapped her hands, and the manâs grin broadened as he reached into the pocket of his coat and pulled out a ring box.
Dorothy pursed her lips. Â That was definitely an engagement ring. Â Belle had taken the ring and was looking it over, talking excitedly. Â She canât be getting engaged to someone when sheâs never mentioned him. Â Thatâs ridiculous.
She waited to see if the ring was going on Belleâs finger, but the box was closed, the young man put it back in his pocket, and they clinked glasses. Dorothy nodded to herself. Â No kisses. Â Nothing to suggest the guy was anything other than a friend. Â Probably that ex that Belle had mentioned in the Rabbit Hole, the one who had seemed too much like a brother for her to want to kiss. Â Whoever the engagement ring was for, it wasnât Belle.
âDonât they look happy?â
Zelenaâs voice made her jump, and Dorothy turned with a scowl as the other woman sidled up next to her, a drink in one hand and a smirk on her face.
âThey look like two friends enjoying a drink,â she said. Â âHeâs probably that ex she talked about. Â The one that was just a friend.â
âThey look like more than just friends to me,â said Zelena snidely. Â âIâd say they look perfect for each other.â
âYeah, well, given that youâd interpret someone telling you go jump in a lake as a come-on, I think your ability to read people is kind of crap,â said Dorothy dryly. Â âWhat are you doing here, anyway? Â You decided to stalk Belle now? Given up on creeping out Gold?â
âItâs a free country,â said Zelena stiffly. Â âI might ask you the same question. Why are you lurking in here and not down at the diner mooning over that slutty waitress like usual?â
Dorothy felt her fists clench, and told herself to calm down.
âYou know, youâre right,â she said. Â âGold was about to buy me a drink, so I should really get back there. Â Not like I want to hang out with you, things havenât gotten that desperate.â
Zelena scowled, nostrils flaring, but she tried to cover it with a smile.
âSuit yourself,â she said airily. Â âPerhaps Iâll head down to Grannyâs myself, help Dr Gold down some whisky.â
âBe prepared for him to leave as soon as you get there, then.â
âIâd go and say hello to Belle,â added Zelena, âbut she looks rather busy, donât you think?â
Dorothy raised her chin.
âOnly one way to find out,â she announced.
She strode over to Belleâs table, causing Belle to look up with an expression of surprise, which became a warm smile.
âDorothy!â she said. Â âHey! Â Dâyou want a drink?â
âNah,â said Dorothy bluntly. Â âIâm helping a stupid friend drown his sorrows at Grannyâs, and I really need to get back there before his brain implodes from all the over-analysing heâs doing.â
âIââ Â Belle looked confused. Â âOh. Â Okay.â
âHi,â said the young man, and Belleâs eyes widened.
âOh! Â Sorry! Â Dorothy, this is Will. Â Heâs a good friend of mine. Â Will, this is Dorothy. Â She works at the hospital as a nurse.â
âPleased to meet you, Will,â said Dorothy. Â âAny good friend of Belleâs is a friend of mine.â
She gave Zelena a meaningful look over her shoulder, and Zelena scowled. Dorothy turned back to face Belle and Will.
âSoâŠâ  She gestured between them.  âYou guys arenât dating, then?â
âOh, God no!â said Belle, with a chuckle. Â âNo, weâre just friends.â
âIâm sort of ninety percent engaged to someone else,â added Will, and Dorothy grinned.
âCongratulations,â she said. Â âJust thought Iâd check. Â People tend to jump to conclusions in this town.â
She glared at Zelena again, who had developed an interest in the contents of her drink.
âOkay, well - I guess Iâll see you at work,â said Dorothy breezily. Â âNice meeting you, Will.â
She shot Zelena a withering look as she passed, receiving a glare in return, and left the Rabbit Hole feeling somewhat lighter of heart. Â Belle was a free agent. Â Now all she had to do was get Gold to ask her out. Â Piece of cake.

I think PBL has been the most challenging part of this so far. Independent study is fine! I can set my own pace and watch videos and pause them and nut the concepts out and then even discuss them with my unofficial study group friends. But PBL is so forced and some of my group members clearly don't want to be there and always push everything way out of the scope we are meant to be learning. They can't explain anything properly either - in that they don't use examples or full sentences or summarise things properly. It's complacency and laziness and arrogance and it means the rest of the group has to compensate for them by filling in the gaps and also the silences. By the end of the second 2 hour session with them I am extremely drained and thinking very dark things about myself. But at the end of today's session our facilitator came to me and said he could tell I was really, really trying and that I contribute in very meaningful ways to the group. I cried because it's so hard to hear that and yet I really needed it.
