The Best Summer Day Yet
August 20th 2017 11:44pm
Ā Lets start this on a positive note. On a positive meditation. Which is: Itās always good to go with your gut. Sometimes you may doubt your gut. You may, and probably will think things like: āWell shit. I really feel, and think that this is a good idea, but I also feel a crippling sense of doubt.ā
I think, this is normal. Thereās an idea that going with your gut comes with an utter sense of purpose and zero doubt about what youāre doing. NOT TRUE. Nope, nope, nope.
Just how not going with your gut may produce a sense of doubt, it goes the other way too. The only difference is, you untimely feel more grounded about going with your gut.
The plan was to go cliff jumping today with my very dear friend Alder. However, my psychiatrist sort of called me out on my bullshit. Like āHow is this going to help with your compulsivity?ā
So I asked my dad to take us to this little island that Iāve wanted to explore. Honestly, I felt wracked with a sort of sadness and anticipitory-regret, contemplating when Iāll get a chance to do this local cliff jump. Counting the days I have left in the summer when Iāll be in the area. To get it done. I was convinced I wasnāt going to enjoy myself.
When we were dropped off at the dock, a ferry was just about to go and I said to Alder āI kind of just want to say āscrew you familyā and go take the ferry back and go cliff jumping. What do you think?ā
āWell, Iām not new to the whole āscrew you familyā thing and cliff jumping is fun but I donāt really care. What do you want to do?ā
What do I want to do?
My gut⦠I wanted to not lie to my parents and explore the island no matter how hard my impulsivity and obsessive mind was dragging me the other way.
Let me tell you, it was HARD to say āWell. Letās just wait for an hour at least. For the next ferry.ā
But I am so, so, so, glad I did.
We got this freakinā massive ice cream, talked to some locals, and began our walk.
We walked to ancient tree, frolicked around, kicked a random exercise ball around, meditated (I did at least).
Once all that was done, we were deciding wether to go on a massive hike or go home and maybe do the local cliff jump.
Again, a chance to follow my gut or otherwise.
So, I decided that the hike was probably a fair but to do with calories, and I just wanted to āhead home.ā
But, as we were walking down the trail I thought of doing the local cliff jump, and how that felt like a defeat. I wouldnāt be doing it out of joy, but because I need it to feel like I ācan enjoy my summerā or something like that.
So, I thought, āWell. Maybe itās not just one obsession or another. The walking or the jumping. Maybe I can find something else.ā
Long story short, we went looking for a beach and a lady gave us a ride to a dock. Which of course got me all nervous thinking āBackflips anyone?ā BUT, I was able to manage my thoughts. I was able to be like āYāknow what? No. N, fucking no. Iām not going to do anything thats remotely an obsessive thing, that I donāt feel happy or good about. Not if Iām sure. So I didnāt. And Yāknow what? I didnāt do one backflip, or backdive, or dangerous thing, (I did jump off of a little rock into mystery waters but that was fine Iām sure) but swimming through the water, diving under a little, smiling, doing front crawl, wrestling on docks with Alder, I felt brave.
That was cool. That was really really cool.
So much so, that on the way back when we got a ride from these other people and they said āNice swimming today.ā I said āThank you.ā Before awkwardly mumbling out, because I realized the error of my ways. No Margo, they were commenting on the water overall, not your fun (front)dives and graceful front crawl. But, I was proud.
I really, really, like Alder. He can empathize with my mind getting āstuck on thingsā he thinks it may be the ADD, and I donāt feel like I need to āpretendā around him. Iām never trying to please him, (Except to make sure heās rested and has food. Good island Italian by the way) I donāt feel like I need to put on a face. I can stop and read an infographic about water management and heāll read it with me.
Today, the sun, the water, the nature, the laughter, the freedom, that esscence of exactly what Iām after, today (Well yesterday) was my best summer day so far.
PPS: Upon my fathers request we took the bus back. I love that man. Also yay me for being responsible.
