I finished Strange Pictures by Uketsu today.

It was a fun and engaging mystery. I kind of suck at unveiling details myself so I tend to read ahead and just get amazed by the twist without thinking as much as I should, but I did get one good deduction in! (It came about from the wrong piece of evidence…)

I kind of struggled to truly care about any of the characters until the very very end, but I don’t consider it too much of a fault. I was struck by how “Japanese” the translation ended out, it felt very intentional to leave certain phrases sounding foreign, not quite native to how English speakers talk. I liked it. It’s that kind of “translated” quality I want for my own writing, somehow.

So this week we are at Lakeside and one of my favorite activities- reading- is high up on the list of things to do. We are renting a place very close to the center of the little town and just a few short steps to the lakefront which is pretty wonderful. There is a bench at the end of our street that sits in the sunshine overlooking Lake Erie and I have found myself on that bench several times…
