Great meme-essay about the two diametrically opposed, but identically silly, ways not to learn how to fight: extremely soft arts like aikido, and hypermacho “reality-based” arts. My favorite passage, after the obligatory literature review of aikidoka leaping ludicrously and goateed krav magicians, is this:

A big part of the overlap in all this BS is what I like to call the “protagonist syndrome”. This is the mentality that [because you are] the one who knows [martial arts], you are the good guy, and the bad guys are the muggers and rapists who never know how to fight…right? [An] episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast [featured] “aikido guy” [who] summed up this fallacy quite accidentally: “Picking up fights at bars is not what a trained expert does, that’s what an untrained asshole does.” [There] is the biggest problem. In aikido [and in hypermacho arts,] all agency is taken away from the attacker: they always hold their knives/guns at the perfect distance for you to counter, always advance with an ultra telegraphed hammer fist, or always panic like cartoons when grappled slightly. The hero is always the disciplined, strong and skilled [hero]. But we do not live in fantasy land. If the likes of Jon Jones, Mike Tyson and Badr Hari and have taught us anything, it is that high caliber fighters can also be high caliber assholes.
