Yalls if my blog looks like the ramblings of a crazy person for a few days itâs because Iâm going down the cryptozoology and conspiracy theories rabbit hole again I promise I do not believe most of these and find them interesting I promise
Ghostshire Valley Chapter 9 - THEM RATS! (OHWOOOW)
Summary: It was well past moonrise when Copia lured you out of the Hollow with the promise of something adorable. You weren't expecting therapy rats in tiny capes with criminal tendencies, or for them to steal your heart (and your shoelaces).
hi!! special chapter for Pride Month because i am a homosexual (if that wasnât already obvious lol). okay so itâs not technically Pride-themed, BUT it is cozy, emotionally validating, and full of tiny rats in capes, which feels pretty on-brand for queer joy anyway.
also: i was super brave at the doctorâs today, and this was my reward to myself :D
so if you are also out here trying your bestâwhether that means navigating your identity, going to scary appointments, or just holding yourself togetherâyou deserve glowing pears of closure, soft cider comfort, and a mossy cottage full of unconditional support.
(and rats. always rats.)
đ happy pride, friends. stay soft, stay weird, and maybe unionize your emotional support rodents too.
next chapter (hopefully) coming out tuesday or wednesday :D
read here or on ao3!
It was well past moonrise, and the Hollow had taken on that hushed, glittering quality it always wore when the real magic started to yawn and stretch its limbs. The petals in your hair pulsed softly with residual bloomlight, and your hands were still sticky with some kind of laughter-fruit when Copia caught your eye and crooked a finger in the universal sign for come with me if you want to pet something adorable.
You followed.
The path wound out of the Hollow and into the quieter fringe of Ghostshire, where trees leaned in with the air of eavesdropping, and moss paved the roads like sleepy velvet. His cottage appeared between two roots, looking as if it had been planted rather than builtâhalf stone, half mushrooms, all cozy mischief.
Copia fumbled with a key carved from bone and laughter, then gestured you inside. âPrepare yourself,â he said. âThey are⌠a lot.â
You opened the door.
And were immediately swarmed.
A blur of paws, whiskers, and tiny embroidered capes darted across the floorboards. One launched from a bookshelf and landed squarely on your shoulder, chittering triumphantly.
Copia beamed. âEveryone, behave. We have company.â
The rats did not behave.
One was tugging at your sleeve. Another was climbing the curtain. A third had stolen your shoelace and appeared to be forming a trade union.
âTheyâre technically therapy rats,â Copia said, plucking one off a teacup and placing it gently in his hood. âThough in practice, they mostly provide chaos and unsolicited judgment.â
You blinked as one climbed into your hood. âDo they have⌠names?â
âOh yes,â he said proudly. âAllow me to introduce them.â
He pointed first to the curtain climber, now hanging upside-down like a pirate. âThatâs Mozzarella. Sheâs the strategist. Excellent at heists, and once faked her own death for a biscuit.â
Mozzarella gave a dramatic little squeak and flung herself into a hammock.
âThe small grumpy one in the corner is Pesto,â he continued. âShe has opinions. Strong ones. About everything.â
Pesto was glaring at you from atop a spoon, somehow.
âThe round one with the flower crown? Thatâs Crumpet. Sheâs soft. Emotionally and physically. Cries at sad books.â
Crumpet, indeed round, was nibbling a page from something called Whispers of the Forgotten Eclair and sobbing gently.
âAnd last but never leastâŚâ He leaned down and scooped up the one sitting primly in a teacup, sipping something steamy and suspicious. âInspector Beans. Donât ask about his credentials. He carries a badge made of pressed lavender.â
Inspector Beans squeaked once and then adjusted a monocle you were 78% sure he wasnât wearing before.
You were in love.
âTheyâre delightful,â you said, as Mozzarella tied your shoelaces together with a flourish and Pesto stole your ring. âAnd possibly criminal.â
âTheyâve unionized,â Copia confirmed. âThereâs a charter on the fridge. They have a tiny legal team. All rats. Very efficient.â
You sat down on a mossy cushion as Crumpet curled into your lap and sighed. Copia handed you a steaming mugâsomething rich and spiced, like cider made of secrets and warm blankets.
âWelcome to my chaos,â he said. âItâs not much, but itâs home. And occasionally on fire.â
A rat swung by on a length of yarn like a furry Tarzan and knocked over a jar of sugar stars.
ââŚVery occasionally.â
You leaned back, sipping the dream-cider, Crumpet purring like a loaf of clouds, and let yourself rest for a moment in the quiet joy of it all.
Copia blinked at you over the rim of his mug, then looked at the rats, who hadâby this pointâformed a very small, very judgmental semicircle around your shoes.
âAre you okay?â you asked.
ââŚDefine okay,â he said slowly.
Mozzarella let out a squeak that might have translated to donât drag us into this.
âI mean, yes,â Copia said. âMostly. Spiritually? Iâm like a well-worn sock. Warm, mostly functional, but with one inexplicable hole that keeps getting bigger no matter how many times you try to ignore it.â
Crumpet offered him a crumb of sadness-biscuit from your lap. He took it solemnly.
âI didnât plan to get therapy rats,â he admitted. âIt just sort of⌠escalated. One day youâre having a weird week and find a rat with a tiny crown in your teapot, and the next, youâre building a bunk bed and explaining consent laws to a rodent named after a pasta sauce.â
Pesto gave a small salute with a toothpick sword.
âThey help,â Copia said quietly. âI mean⌠when things get too loud up hereââ he tapped his temple ââthey bring me back down. They make everything a little softer. A little sillier. Easier to hold.â
There was a long pause.
Then Inspector Beans climbed into your mug, took a single dainty sip, and sneezed into your sleeve.
You blinked.
Copia blinked.
ââŚOkay that one might need therapy,â you said.
Copia nodded gravely. âHeâs working through some stuff. We think he was a poet in a past life. Or a tax auditor.â
You couldnât help but laughâand it came out easier than expected, like something long-crumpled finally smoothing out.
âI like your rats,â you said.
âThey like you too,â he replied. âCrumpet only loafs on people she trusts.â
Crumpet squeaked, rolled over, and fell asleep.
You sipped your drink again and exhaled.
You reached over and gently nudged Crumpet aside so you could put your hand over Copiaâs.
He was startled slightly, then he looked down at your hand, and his shoulders slumpedârelieved, maybe, or just tired in that deep, soul-heavy way people get when theyâve been trying too hard for too long without saying it out loud.
âYou donât always have to be funny, you know,â you said softly.
He opened his mouth, probably to make a joke, and then thought better of it.
âI know,â he said after a beat. âItâs just⌠easier. To be the one who laughs first. Before anyone else can.â
You squeezed his hand. âYouâre allowed to be tired. Or sad. Or soft. You donât have to earn your place here with a punchline.â
Copia didnât speak for a moment. Mozzarella had crawled into his lap by now and was gently grooming the edge of his sleeve, like she understood things too big to say.
âIâm glad youâre here,â you said simply. âEven if all you do today is sit and breathe and pet your rats. Thatâs enough.â
He blinked a few timesâsuspiciously shiny-eyedâand then nodded, once. âThanks,â he said quietly. âFor seeing me. Not just the noise I make.â
âYouâre very seeable,â you replied, which made him laugh a little, despite himself.
He leaned back on the couch, Crumpet now loafed squarely on his chest like some sort of healing poultice made of tiny feet and warmth. The quiet settled between you both again, but it wasnât heavy this time. Just real.
ââŚWant to help me build them a new tunnel system later?â he asked eventually. âI bought mini lanterns and everything.â
âAbsolutely,â you said. âAs long as we name one tunnel âThe Emotional Bypass.ââ
He snorted. âDeal.â
You and Copia sprawled out on the floor, blueprints spread like a miniature treasure map. You handed him a tiny hammer, which felt suspiciously heavy for something so small.
âCareful,â Copia warned, smirking. âThese mini nails have been known to cause serious paper cuts. No joke.â
You rolled your eyes but gingerly hammered a tiny plank into place. âBuilding rat tunnels is officially more high-stakes than my love life.â
Copia chuckled. âAt least with these guys, you wonât get ghosted.â
You held up a miniature lantern, its soft glow matching the faint shimmer of the glowing pear Phantom gave you earlier. âThink these will help them find their way? Or just confuse them into existential crises?â
He grinned. âIf they start questioning their purpose, blame Phantomâs fruit.â
You carefully painted a tiny wooden sign: âThe Emotional Bypassâ.
âShould we add a snack station?â you asked.
Copiaâs eyes lit up. âDefinitely. Maybe a tiny bar called âCheddar Place,â where they serve only the finest crumb-sized cheese.â
You laughed. âI feel like weâre enabling emotional eating, but okay.â
Copia raised an eyebrow, nodding toward the glowing pear sitting ominously close. âIs that why you have a glowing pear next to you? Planning to snack your feelings away?â
You smirked, poking the pear lightly. âYeah, well⌠closure tastes better with a side ofâŚwellâŚclosure.â
Copia grinned, picking up a tiny wrench. âPerfect. Emotional support and emotional snacking. Weâre basically rat therapists now.â
You rolled your eyes, wielding your miniature hammer like a pro. âTherapists who also provide snacks â now thatâs a niche.â
Copia winked. âIâll put it on my business card. âCopiaâs Rat Therapy & Snack Emporium.â Guaranteed to mend tiny hearts and fill tiny bellies.â
You carefully placed a tiny crate labeled âCheddar Placeâ near the tunnel entrance.
You glanced at the glowing pear again, its soft light pulsing gently like a heartbeat. With a tentative sigh, you picked it up and took a bite.
The flavor bloomed on your tongueâsweet, sharp, and deeply comforting. It was like tasting a moment you didnât know you needed: the quiet ending of a long, tangled story, wrapped in bittersweet notes that lingered just enough to remind you that healing wasnât a destination, but a gentle unfolding. It truly did taste like closure.
You closed your eyes for a moment, letting the feeling wash over you. âWell,â you said softly, âthis explains a lot. I feel like I should either call my ex, apologize profusely, and brace for a total emotional meltdown... or just take up interpretive dance and communicate every single messy feeling through dramatic jazz hands.â
Copia laughed quietly, then set down his tiny paintbrush. Without a word, he reached out and wrapped you in a gentle hugâwarm, steady, and reassuring. His arms felt like a soft anchor in a sea of swirling thoughts.
âYou donât have to figure it all out right now,â he murmured into your hair. âSometimes, itâs enough to just hold the space for yourself, to let the feelings be messy, confusing, and beautiful all at once. And hey, if that means dancing wildly through the chaos, then so be it.â
You leaned into him, feeling the tension in your shoulders start to melt away. The soft glow of the pear mingled with the quiet rhythm of his heartbeat, and for a brief moment, everything slowed down. The worries, the past, the tangled emotionsâthey all softened into something like peace.
Pulling back just enough to meet his eyes, you smiled, a little shy but full of warmth. âThank you, Copia. For thisâeverything. For the tunnels, the cheese bars, the terrible puns... and this hug.â
He grinned, brushing a stray lock of hair behind your ear. âAnytime. Weâre all just trying to find our way through the mess together. And hey, at least with rats and cheese, the mess is a little more fun.â
Once the last tunnel plank was set, the final sign hung (âTunnel of Self-Compassion â Under Repairâ), and Cheddar Place was stocked with four kinds of tiny cheese, you and Copia sat back on the mossy rug, legs tangled, cups warm again in your hands.
âYou ready?â he asked softly.
You nodded.
He tapped the little silver bell hanging from a tunnel arch, and within seconds, Mozzarella appeared. Helmet on, cape fluttering, chewing what mightâve been a tactical crayon. She squeaked onceâcommandinglyâand the others followed in a flurry of feet and tiny enthusiasm.
Pesto, suspicious as ever, stopped to sniff the lanterns first before approving the route. Crumpet squeaked nervously at the glowing signs but pressed bravely on, tail twitching like an exclamation point. And Inspector Beans entered last, clutching a tiny notepad and adjusting his nonexistent monocle with somber purpose.
They explored. They tasted. They got lost in âThe Emotional Bypassâ for a solid two minutes until Mozzarella bit through a cardboard wall and rerouted them. They sat together at Cheddar Place like they were discussing weighty, cheese-related philosophy. At one point, Pesto sword-fought a plush caterpillar that had not been invited.
And you and Copiaâboth warm from the cider, from the softness, from each otherâjust watched.
You smiled gently, turning back to the tiny bar where Crumpet had offered Mozzarella a cracker with the reverence of a ring-bearer. âYeah. I think they are.â
A pause.
Then he asked:
âWhat about you?â
Your fingers tightened slightly around the mug. You thought about the glowing pear. About ghosts of exes and old fears and the way your laughter sometimes wore armor.
You watched Inspector Beans curl up next to a glowing lantern with a soft sigh, nose twitching like heâd finally let something go.
And you said, honestly:
âIâm not there yet. But I think Iâm⌠on the way.â
Copia didnât say anything. You glanced at him, and noticed his face curled into a smile.Â
The tunnel lanterns flickered like soft fireflies.
Mozzarella climbed onto the bar and saluted you both.
Pesto tossed a miniature napkin over her shoulder like sheâd just retired from espionage.
And Crumpet fell asleep facedown in a plate of cheese.
You laughed.
Copia did too.
Mozzarella stood atop the miniature cheese crate, red string tied like destiny around her tail, and stared into the tunnel with the kind of thousand-yard gaze that only seasoned operativesâor small rodents planning nonsenseâcould manage.
âTonightâŚâ she whispered.
â...we heist.â
Pesto brandished a tiny grappling hook fashioned from a paperclip and three stubborn crumbs.
Crumpet donned a velvet cape backwards and immediately tripped over it.
Inspector Beans blew across the top of a thimble like it was a whiskey glass and muttered something about âthe cheddar being too quiet lately.â
You and Copia, of course, were not invited.
Mozzarella made this extremely clear by placing a single cornflake between you and the mission zone and squeaking something that, in tone if not vocabulary, translated to: "This is union business. Do not interfere unless there are snacks or explosions."
So you watched.
They vanished into Tunnel 3-B (âMild Existential Dreadâ) and reappeared beneath the kitchenette five minutes laterâvia a trapdoor you hadnât known existed. Mozzarella led the charge, goggles down, her tail flicking like an exclamation mark. Crumpet clutched a glitter glue map in her mouth. Pesto scaled the counter using nothing but spite and a bendy straw.
They were going for⌠the treat cabinet.
Specifically, the forbidden tier: the top shelf, where Copia kept his âemergency onlyâ cheese coinsâaged, imported, extremely expensive, and sealed in a box labeled âFor Sad Tuesdays Only.â
âThey wouldnât,â Copia whispered.
They would.
They did.
Pesto distracted the motion-activated night light with a shiny spoon.
Inspector Beans popped open the cabinet with the confidence of a rat whoâd cracked safes in a past life.
Mozzarella rappelled down on a thread of embroidery floss, Mission: Gouda Extraction glinting in her eyes.
And Crumpet⌠Crumpet just stood there, cape caught on a knob, quietly humming what sounded like Ave Maria in squeaks.
You and Copia were too stunned to move.
At last, Mozzarella hit the counter with a triumphant chirp and hoisted the cheese coin overhead like a holy relic. Inspector Beans saluted. Pesto fell off a spoon. Crumpet wept softly from atop a tea tin.
The rats had won.
They descended victoriously into the tunnels, a chunk of gold-wrapped cheese their prize, as a dramatic squeaky rendition of the Mission: Impossible theme played from someoneâs tiny harmonica.
And just before they vanishedâŚ
Mozzarella turned.
Made brief, unblinking eye contact with you.
And pointedâslowlyâto a crayon-drawn sign tacked just inside the tunnel mouth.
It read:
âNothing is truly unreachable. Especially if you have friends. And rope.â
You and Copia sat in stunned silence.
Then he burst out laughing, loud and free and a little awed.
âI think,â he said, âI just got out-planned by a unionized rodent in a cape.â
You nodded solemnly. âWe should probably let them run this place.â
He passed you the last normal cracker from the cabinet and watched the tunnels glow.
ââŚThink weâre in the next union meeting?â
You held up your snack like a solemn offering.
âOnly if we bring cheese.â
