Story time: Cafe has a notch missing out of his ear not because he was a rescue but when I was bonding him a year and a half ago, someone took a nibble out of his ear.
Nothing like that happened since and now everyone cuddles but bonding mixed age rats from different families is tough. I still don’t know who nibbled him. (Possibly cranky old souffle.)

I made a rat bonding pouch for the first time. This will be put inside a scarf, but for now this is what we've got.

I’m never getting rats in the summer again, I think the easiest way to bond with your rats is with a hoodie and it was just too hot with the boys. They are pretty used to me but still timid, outside their cage especially. Theo is adventurous but I don’t feel like they really “love” me yet because I haven’t been able to spend as much time with them & they haven't really bonded to me. They are very curious and will come up to the front of the cage all the time, but hands make them kinda nervous still (unless they’re sleeping, they love pets then), and they don’t like being picked up :P
They were upstairs in a spare room for quarantine then when we brought them downstairs we were gone for 3 days camping, then when we got back, most of my attention was on Lionel because he was so sick and needed looking after to get him to eat + drink enough. Now that he’s passed I’m glad to have this extra time for them, I hope they grow out of their shyness & can feel closer to me. I can’t wait for fall so I can always have a rattie in my hoodie ^_^ All four of my rats love when I have my hoodie on and they can slip in to my sleeves :)
Hi! I've had my two girls for about a week and a half, and I've been working on bonding with them but I don't know if I'm doing it right. They're the first rats I've ever had so I'm probably overreacting, but I wondered if you had any advice? Thanks!
Well, I’m definitely no expert, but there are a few things I can tell you. First off, and this is probably obvious, but take it slow, especially if your girls weren’t hand-raised. Food works wonders. They’ll probably use their teeth when getting to know you - try not to flinch! As long as they don’t draw blood, then it’s good biting. Ear rubs are a good thing. Food works wond- wait, did I say that already? Well, it’s true.
Don’t know how much that helps; mostly just take it slow and don’t force it. Some rats cuddle right away, some don’t; my first rat nuzzled my neck in the pet store, but I’ve also had a few that would take an ear rub but would never want to be picked up.
If anyone else who has more experience/success than I do has any more advice, feel free to add it.
I was playing with the girls through the bars of their cage last night (i do this for a few minutes daily to reinforce that food never comes through the bars, only fingers) & Zi kept reaching her arms out & grabbing at me. turns out finger scritches were insufficient & that was her way of telling me she wanted picked up & cuddled. she immediately started bruxing & boggling ♡
