Zebra Pleco Alternative
Love the look of a zebra pleco but dont want to spend $700 or more? Then let me introduce you to a fish that is not only less expensive, but also doesnt grow 2 feet long!
***EDIT: I just learned that zebras are actually a dwarf species that max out at 3.5 inches long. They do not grow to be 2 feet.
Meet the striped Raphael catfish, aka the Humbug catfish:
On average, these guys will grow to be about 6 inches, but there are reports of them reaching as much as 9.6 inches, although this is rare. They love to hide, get along well with fish that aren't small enough to eat, and require temperatures around 76-86°F.
Some of my more unique fish, including my two “deformed” babies!
The first picture is Curly, my dojo loach! She’s got one deformed pectoral fin (pictured), and is a living spaghet. The big koi/marble angel is Balrog, named for the license plate of the fish person at the lfs I got him at. He’s got an extra, smaller pectoral fin on one side (it’s not pictured, sorry)! The rest (platinum angel, koi angel, unknown color angel, and raphael catfish AKA living chainsaw) don’t have names yet, despite the fact I’ve had them for months, oops.
Ignore the messy water, I did a giant water change/tank clean/filter media rinse/aquascape today, so it’s a little cloudy! (Tank is very well-established, and filter media was rinsed, not replaced, don’t worry!)
I haven’t posted something from my main tank in...Forever.  Just got these guys today, absolutely gorgeous featherfin catfish (synodontis euptera).  They are such characters!  Gesundheit wasn’t too pleased about them but he’s pretty chill.  All three have had a few minor spats already but after a few hours they’ve already calmed down a lot.
Gabe is the one in the back, and Tobias the one in the front. Â Tobias is almost full size, at over 6 inches, and is now officially the largest fish I have ever kept. Â And when those dorsal fins pop up...So beautiful. <3

Bumblebee catfish thought the raph’s whole clam was just for him, so we compromised and I cut it in half. I’m going to be measuring for the 75 soon and drawing out what kind of scape I want for it.
