TIL that the last known surviving thylacine (Tasmanian tiger) – the one that was recorded in a zoo on that black and white video footage you might have seen – died because he was locked out of his sleeping area overnight and caught pneumonia from the extreme local weather. To add insult to injury, the zoo thought that they could just replace him with another individual, apparently unaware of how dire the situation was for his species and suggesting that they hadn't even been attempting to find a mate for him. They'd been accused of doing this with other animals they were supposed to be breeding before.
I'm just, so sad and angry that this is how the thylacine species ultimately ended. The last one we had in our protection died alone and cold and sick from neglect at the hands of an organization that didn't do its fucking job.*
*I firmly believe that responsible and accredited zoos are crucial for conservation in this current moment. This is not an anti-zoo post.

Remember that thread I reblogged like two days ago about goldfish dumping? I went on a guided hike today at a nature preserve and found out that people were doing that at their pond. -_- Luckily they've introduced native largemouth bass that have mostly taken care of the problem by eating the goldfish while still fitting in with the rest of the pond's ecosystem

I'm really glad that I did my research on native wildflowers before I weeded the front landscaping because there's a big aster plant there that I might have pulled if I didn't know that it's an excellent bee plant. Now whenever I step out the front door I see all kinds of bees and wasps and such buzzing around it and it makes me so happy, especially because I couldn't get any of the seeds I purchased for my backyard pollinator garden to grow.
