Playing dice with the Internet: 10 random websites
The Internet is a weird place. I knew that, you knew that, we all knew that. It has become somewhat of a given, what with rule 34, rule 63, and all the lesser-known ones. But the funny thing is that people stick to their little circles of maybe 5 or 6 websites almost exclusively, with a few branch loops for other tasks (looking up facts, finding song lyrics, et cetera). So I decided to break out of the loop, push the random buttons. I found a couple, and I'm sure a Google search will find a thousand more. And then I went clicking.
What follows are 10 of the most memorable ones.
Site #1: Staggering Beauty
Be warned, the site is based around a jumpscare. And...it got me. Sorry there's no video of it, but I thought I needed to fess up anyway. It happens at a random time, so you can't brace yourself for it. And the whole point of the site, besides that, is being one of those balloon things that wave their arms and advertise cars.
Site 2: LEEKSPIN
I'm sure there is some kind of perverted meaning to this that I don't understand because I am American, but I listened to its weird and halfway disturbing song the whole time I wrote this, and it's starting to get to me. No idea why, but I feel the need to throw macaroni at the screen at around the 5 minute mark. Okay, correction: the 1:30 mark. I just went and looked at the timer. And I thought it had been more than 5 minutes. I'm losing it.
Site #3: Passive Agressive Passwords
Okay, so we know that password strength is important, and so you can input your password on this site and get it analyzed by inimical in-laws. It took me mashing on my keyboard to even get "kinda strong" out of them. Basically, this is a great way to lower your self-esteem and maybe get a good password too. But if you actually want a password, I suggest passphra.se instead.
Site #4: Eel Slap
Well. Mouse around to slap a man with an eel. How typically Internet. And now I can't ever unsee that picture of me, reaching my hand through the screen, grasping an available moray, and...somehow I get the feeling someone just called a psychiatrist about me. Better not finish that sentence.
Site #5: CAT BOUNCE!
Chances are, you've seen this one before. I've seen it other places, but since it came up when I clicked, it goes on the list. Throwing cat pictures around a computer screen? 9GAG in a nutshell. And probably other places too. Cheezburger too, maybe?
Site #6: Koalas to the Max
This site is kinda cool to the average person, because you mouse over each circle to split it into smaller circles, eventually revealing the picture that they form. For people who are computer-nerdy like me, watching the discrete cosine transform in reverse is just a "wow" moment. (DON'T JUDGE ME, TUMBLR. YOU HAVE SUPERWHOLOCK.)
Site #7: WomenGamers
The internet in a microcosm so far: jumpscares, crazy cool math, sites dedicated to microscopic groups of people, and lots of cats. Nothing against women gaming, of course; quite the opposite. I enjoy running across a girl or woman on a game I'm playing and having a conversation. Breaks the monotony of "n00b i killed u" and "fag hacker u suck" that I see otherwise. But the fact remains that girls are rare, at least in the games I play at the level I play. So it is kinda cool to find a website devoted to them, even if they seem to be all about activism rather than actual gaming.
Site #8: Republique des Mangues
Just a mango. With a spinning background. As weird as most of what I see on the internet is, this one was the most random yet. All the others (bury me with my money, Falling Falling, what have you) kinda made sense, given the weird that we know to expect on the internet. But this one--a french gif of a mango with spinning triangles? Mind does not comprehend.
Site #9: PurPortal
Paste part of whatever email you think is spam here and then click "search" to see if it is. Great tool, and way more useful than I thought I would get from clicking the random button. Not that I have any hoax emails in my spam I could test it on...right?
Site #10: Pointer Pointer
This one has some pretty frightening implications. You move your mouse, and then the website produces a picture that has someone pointing to your cursor (pointer). And it really makes me not want to put pictures of me pointing on the Internet, for fear I'll end up pointing at someone's mouse.
And now that you have (maybe) enjoyed your foray into the random with me, click here for some good advice.
