A trolley is heading towards five people tied up on the tracks. You are at the control lever, where you can choose to switch the trolley onto another track, but there is one person tied up on that alternative route. Would you (1) choose to do nothing and allow the trolley to kill the five people, or (2) would you pull the lever, diverting the trolley to the track with one person, thereby actively causing one death but saving five?
(as a former engineer, Grim is the bane of all philosophy. He'd time the switch of the rail to stop the trolley before it hits anyone.)
