are there any inner demons they can never seem to get rid of? what are they?
x. when aster was essentially murdered & ratatosk was reverted back into the shape of a core, there was the case of literal demons to deal with just beyond the now unguarded door in the ginnungagap. their initial purpose was to convince ratatosk to reform the mana in the unified world of sylvarant and tethe’alla because of strange weather patterns affecting the state of nature. lakes were drying up, snow was falling in usually arid deserts and the seas were raging.
but unbeknown to them, they were walking into the lion’s den with a spirit that was filled with rage. ratatosk had been betrayed after making a pact with the hero mithos & in lieu of that, harbored great feelings of distrust and blind rage towards humans. it was then that they realized ratatosk had founded a different solution. instead of reforming the mana, he sought to rid the world of all mankind because of them destroying the great tree. in an argument over these beliefs, aster took the unfortunate brunt of rage that resulted in his death.
thus began richter’s journey to somehow restore the life of his friend while also dealing with the unguarded door. he’s resolute in his desire to kill ratatosk for what he’d done, but is aware of what lies behind the door and realizes what may ensue if it remains unguarded. he believes that he has it all figured out and can trump all scenarios — resurrecting aster, killing ratatosk and keeping the door protected.
unfortunately, he attempts to borrow the power of the demons with every intention of turning it back against them, but it’s a power that goes awry. it becomes a wrench in his plans that causes great & unnecessary bloodshed through the vanguard.
then finally: his inner demon. he makes claim that his fate is cursed because ratatosk, after reverting into his core form, evolves himself into a new human shape in order to protect himself. the very same ratatosk that he refuses to forgive for such a violent act. aster was good — an idealist. sought the best for everybody. aster had looked beyond the typical fears and stereotypes that humans harbor for half-elves. typically, this wouldn’t pose a problem except for the face ratatosk wears is the one of the friend he’d lost.
