It's been a long, long time

Since I last saw you smile

In your face was a look

Of placid grace

The sort of look that says

"This may be nice,

But it can't take the place

Of such tender hands

In such small supple palms"

All those years I tried

To be a good man

Who looked out for

All of his friends

After all

Isn't that what they say

It takes a village

To raise a child?

Perhaps the years

May have brought a change,

A glimmer of heaven

In my eyes

So she thought I was cute

And we got married

It was sudden

But I didn't mind

I wanted her

No matter what

We were happy

But you are not with us,

The girl I knew

Is gone

She is gone

But you are still here

In my mind

You who taught me

Love should be infinite

Suddenly I am terrified

There is no one who I can turn to

Except

My wife

Who can tell what is wrong

Who can tell me

I am not a good man anymore

And she is gone

Don't leave me

It’s dark outside, and the world feels as if it is winding down towards a final stop. It’s so quiet now.

The two of them are walking along a quiet street, shoulders together, almost as if they’re part of the same thing

“Do you like it here?” the man without a dog asks, into the darkness.

“What?” the painter is staring at a neon sign advertising a bar. It reads “Constantine’s” in  blue letters, and above it a cartoon skeleton lounges, drinking a martini.

“Do you like it here with me?” the man without a dog repeats. The painter grimaces at the sign, matching the skeleton’s expression.

“Oh, yes,” he says, still transfixed. “More than anything.”

“And me?” the man without a dog adds, “Do you like me?”
